    Default Steelers vs. Raiders

Wow, 4 interceptions by Big Ben today. That concussion may have messed him up worse than people think.

Sapp sacks Big Ben, and that looks to be that. Big win for Oaktown.

For what it's worth I picked Oakland in our pick'em contest.
At home after the win over the Cards, and Steelers just feel like a sinking stone to me, with or without Ben. (sorry Jay )

What has happened to the Steelers? They really blow this year.

It's too bad they don't have a better QB, like, I dunno, say maybe one who is 6 5, 230 pounds with a laser, rocket arm.......

    Not really.

The reason their pass defense is ranked so high is because teams have gotten up on them by 20+ points and ran the ball the entire game. They may allow the fewest passing yards..but they also don't have near as many teams passing against them.

Their defense has been decent the past 2 weeks..but it's more credited to the fact that the other teams offense is attrocious. The Cardinals blew and so did the Steelers. Either way, theres no excuse to losing to Oakland. Any team that does really has to be the bottom tier of teams in the NFL.

Our identity is the running game/ line of scrimmage, that would be a huge waste of the salary cap to over-invest in just one player like that.

We just need the QB we've got to quit turning the ball over so often. His completion percentage is pretty good, for example (25 of 37 today, I believe.) But the INT's are killing us.

Ben looked very "jumpy" all game long - the concussion(s) were clearly on his mind and the Raiders were very aggressive about putting pressure on him (overplaying the pass rush and forcing Ben into quicker reads that the Steelers had designed. The Raiders do have a good pass rush when they commit their entire defense to that approach.

Of our five losses, Cincy, Atlanta, and the Raiders were clearly lost because we lost the turnover battle, badly.

We outgained Cincy 365-246 but had five turnovers.
We outgained Atlanta 473-399 (even bigger margin before Altanta's OT possession) but lost three fumbles that led to ATL touchdowns
We outgained Oakland 360-98 but had four INTs, including two that were run back for touchdowns.

We were flat-out awful against Jacksonville and in the second half of the SD game. We weren't going to win those two games.

If we'd done a better job taking care of the ball, that's the difference right now between 2-5 and 5-2. And we deserve to be 2-5.

    "Any given Sunday."

Till to the music we grow deaf, to God's beauty blind
Why do the things that connect us slowly pull us apart?
Till we fall away in our own darkness, a stranger to our own hearts
And life itself, rushing over me
Life itself, the wind in black elms,
Life itself in your heart and in your eyes, I can't make it without you

If you don't watch the game, or at least look at the stats or gamebook, then don't go saying things like "The Steelers blew." The Raiders were the team that "blew" today, but we gave the game away with turnovers.

Outside of the INTs, we dominated every other aspect of this game.

Our defense, other than forcing turnovers, was dominant in spite of one of our key guys (Hampton) missing the game. Yes, there are better NTs, but the way Casey commands double and triple teams is vital for freeing up or LBs for big plays, and our defense was solid (98 total yards, 17 passing yards, 2.8 yards per carry) but never made a "game breaking play". Our offense was effective (25-37 passing is a fine completion percentage, with 301 yards; our running game is not playing well on the road but we outgained OAK on the ground in spite of trailing all game long and, therefore, relying on the pass more than we'd like.)

We did one thing wrong; same thing we've been doing all season long. We turned the ball over way too much.

We get that under control and we can get back into the playoff hunt.

The Tribune's Dan Pierson summed up our season really well in today's print edition,

    Improbable repeat

When the defending Super Bowl champion Steelers gave up 41 points to Atlanta last week, it didn't bode well for a repeat. Not since the 1976 Raiders has a Super Bowl winner given up that many points in any game during its championship season. The Raiders lost 48-17 to New England early in the '76 season but rallied to beat the Patriots in the playoffs.

What do the 2-4 Steelers have in common with this year's 1-5 Raiders, 2-5 Bills, 1-5 Browns, 1-6 Lions and 1-6 Cardinals besides poor records? They are the six bottom feeders of the NFL when it comes to turnovers.

The Steelers lost three more fumbles against Atlanta, all of which led to touchdowns in the Falcons' 41-38 overtime victory. That gives Pittsburgh 14 turnovers in six games. Turnovers also cost the Steelers a loss to Cincinnati.
