Oden added to USA Basketball roster
    Associated Press
    July 13, 2006

    COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. --

Lamar Odom and Paul Pierce will miss USA Basketball training camp later this month, while former high school star Greg Oden was added to the roster today.
Odom and Pierce join J.J. Redick among players that won't be in Las Vegas starting July 19. Redick previously said he couldn't play because of a back injury.

Odom withdrew for personal reasons. His 61/2-month-old son, Jayden, died late last month after apparently suffocating while sleeping in his crib in New York.

Pierce is expected to have minor surgery on his left elbow in August. All three players remain part of the roster and will participate over the next two years.
The 7-foot Oden, the consensus national high school player of the year, will attend the opening of camp but won't take part. He recently had surgery for a torn ligament in his right wrist and is expected to be out until the fall.

But USA Basketball managing director Jerry Colangelo and coach Mike Krzyzewski expect the 18-year-old center -- who surely would have been the No. 1 pick in last month's draft had high school players still been eligible -- to have a role in the future, so they added him, anyway. Colangelo had considered Oden for the original 23-man roster.

After training camp, the U.S. team will train and play exhibition games in China and South Korea before opening the world championships in Japan on Aug. 19.

He probably won't make this year's team, but he's a good bet in 2008.

On a side note, when do we announce our 12-man roster for the worlds? The tournament is only 2 months away.

It wasn't about being the team everyone loved, it was about beating the teams everyone else loved.

According to ESPN Bottomline and "Mike and Mike in the Morning" Kirk Hinrich was also added to the roster.

Yeah, Hinrich replaced Reddick because of his bad back.

We lose a lot of shooting, but we gain a very good perimeter defender.

According to USA basketball, Pierce has dropped out too. I wouldn't have selected him anyway, though, after watching how he's played in past summers.

I think Chris Paul needs to be on the team. He's got the quickest hands of anybody on our roster and can be of great use in trapping situations.

Also, Bruce Bowen is a LOCK to make the team. He'll be 37 in 2008 so we wouldnt have added him to the roster if he wasn't going to play this year.

Besides, his game is taylor-made for the international game.

I think in 2008, Battier will take over Bowen's spot.

    Guards:
    Kobe
    Wade
    Redd
    Hinrich
    Paul

    Forwards:
    James
    Marion
    Jamison
    Bowen

    Centers:
    Bosh
    Howard
    Miller

My starting 5 would be Hinrich, Kobe, James, Bowen, Bosh

It's tough leaving Brand and Arenas off the team, but other players are better fits. We need more foot soldiers, less generals.

So, what 12-man rosters would you guys like?

I think I would go something like this...

    1) C - Brad Miller
    2) PF - Chris Bosh
    3) SF - Kobe Bryant (I know he's primarily a SG, but I would want him here in this tournament)
    4) SG - Michael Redd
    5) PG - Dwayne Wade

    (and in no particular order)

    6) Lebron James
    7) Shane Battier/Bruce Bowen
    8) Elton Brand
    9) Dwight Howard
    10) Shawn Marion
    11) Gilbert Arenas/Luke Ridnour (depending on what sort of PG you want)
    12) Adam Morrison

I'm on the "bowen should start" bandwagon.

You play James and Bowen together at PF and SF, and watch James rack up 6 assists on Bowen threes alone.

Meanwhile, you can stick Bowen on the other team's best perimeter player, and let James play the passing lanes.

You'll also be able to do the same thing with Wade and Redd as a tandem off the bench.

It wasn't about being the team everyone loved, it was about beating the teams everyone else loved.

No Brad Miller? Am I the only one who feels that he is perfect for international rules? He is stronger than most international big men and can fight for rebounds and also has the range to step back an dhit the international 3 easily.

From the looks of the list, he is probably a little slow to run with the guys that will make the team. Marion and Brand can do the same things he does, plus the other bigs are better defensively.

I agree with the Brand thing. Even at 6'8 he is big enough and strong enough to dominate the post in internaional play. I think if he and Bosh were on the floor at the same time we could easily run a half court offense, slow and steady (let Carlisle coach ) and win games with ease.

Aswell as dish the ball to whomever is standing outside, slashing in or making his inside move. I want him starting, no doubt.

I added Bosh, because I think he's an unselfish character who also doesn't need to get too physical to be effective. Great length should get him lots of rebounds.

Kobe. Normally a SG, but the competition in this tournament makes it a good thing to play him at SF where he can shoot and slash effectively, while a second good shooter (like Redd or Morrison) at SG makes sure the opposition can't just clog the lanes and expect to get away with it.

At PG I would prefer a Jason Kidd-type, but I don't see one rightnow. I think Luke Ridnour with less dangerous defenders guarding him (which allows him to get away with defensive flaws), together with his speed, passing and playingstyle could be very effective for the US. But, normally you place Wade or Arena's there if you want more firepower. I would be very quick to substitute guys who seem to start "free lancing", that's what could kill this US team.

I think Howard will gain valuable experience, but I want him on the bench, because I suspect he could come into foultrouble fairly easy. Definitely the future starter at Center though.

Brand backs up both PF and C (depending on how the team plays).

Marion can back up both SF and PF.

Shane Battier and Bruce Bowen give the team some specialist defenders at SG and SF, while also threatening from the 3-point line.

LeBron James, can't leave him behind, offcours. Could play anywhere from PG to PF, but he needs to not look at just his own stats.

Wade, also can't be left behind. PG or SG. IF he doesn't start then he should valuable time off the bench. Should expect not to get 20FT's a game and thus has to maybe adapt part of his game.

Arenas. Instant firepower, speed and mobility from the PG and SG position. I wouldn't let him start though.

Why no Jamison love? He can hit the 3 as well with consistency he averaged 6+ boards in the NBA so he would probably be able to get double double numbers in international ball. He is fast and strong enough to play the 3 and 4. I would choose him over Matrix.

Why? Jamison is the poor man's Marion. And I have both but that's because I'm crazy and want Marion to start.

Ehmm... didn't you write you would LOVE to trade Antawn for Shawn if you knew Shawn would be really available?

I like Marion better. Jamison is a good player, a damn good player, no question, but Marion brings more to the team IMO.
