Maybe Isiah wasn't as stupid as we thought! I still think he would have been available in the 2nd rnd. I'd like to see him do that dunk against JO, Benny or Duncan, not some NBA wannabes

According to reports, Phoenix was set to take him at #27. So if this was the guy Isiah wanted all along, then it was wise to take him with their first pick because he probably wouldn't have been around by the time their 2nd came around:

Many experts believed the Knicks reached badly by selecting Renaldo Balkman, but the Suns were reportedly set to pick the forward from South Carolina. The Suns ended up trading out of the first round altogether.

By the way, where is the best place to get info., video, stats, box scores, etc. on this year's summer league?

RCAREY, didn't the Suns come out the next day after the draft and proclaim that they didn't even have Balkman on their radar screen? That was just my recollection, I could be wrong.

Mike D'Antoni Blows Isiah's Story to Bits

I'm of the opinion that picks should be judged not on draft day, but after a few years, and Isiah Thomas might well be proved a genius for drafting Renaldo Balkman. (TrueHoop's profile of Balkman.)

But the Knick GM's cover story, as to why he had to draft Balkman so high, has unraveled.

Howard Beck reports in today's New York Times.
On draft night, Thomas said he took Balkman early because he was sure he would be gone when the Knicks selected again at No. 29 (they did not have a second-round pick). According to Thomas, the Phoenix Suns were set to draft Balkman with one of their two picks, at 21 or 27.

"That's funny," Mike D'Antoni, the Suns' president and coach, told a Phoenix radio station. "He wasn't even on our radar."
Also, along the lines of not making Isiah look good, a professional NBA talent evaluator told me yesterday that Balkman was "the worst pick in the history of the first round."
Hey! What're you kicking me for? You want me to ask? All right, I'll ask! Ma'am, where do the high school girls hang out in this town?

I think Frederic Weis had the distinguishment of "worst pick in the history of the first round" until this.

Remember when Gerald Green had that dunk in last years summer league and people started saying we made a mistake drafting Danny. Fun times, I bet some think we should have picked this dude over Shawne.

Isiah Thomas is a bad GM and his pick of Balkman is one of the all-time bonehead moves.

As for one dunk in a summer league game, that falls under the category of "Big F-ing Deal".

James White is a better dunker than Adam Morrison or Bargnini.

By the aceace logic, he should have been picked first.

Wait-- basketball isn't like soccer, and ties are NOT decided by a slam dunk contest.
The poster "pacertom" since this forum began (and before!). I changed my name here to "Slick Pinkham" in honor of the imaginary player That Bobby "Slick" Leonard picked late in the 1971 ABA draft (true story!)

No, but close games are very often decided by a free throw shooting contest.
