I could do it. I just thought some people would confuse it with the signature line.

I think the spaces in the ----- makes it significantly different without taking up a ton of space or being annoying. Just my thought tho

I'll try it; I don't care. Maybe it won't cause problems.

After dealing with the feature for a while I like it even less than when I voted in Anthem's pole (and I didn't like it then).

Is there a benefit I'm missing?

All I see happening is it makes things confusing sometimes (especially if you reply without quoting) and it is joining totally unrelated thoughts/replies into one post.

Also, if you don't come back to a thread immediately but instead come back in a few hours or more you might miss some further thoughts someone has added because they got gobbled up by the combiner monster and you think you've read so and so's post already (when in fact you only read it prior to the combine monster working on it as they replied to another post or two). ...so you only read what comes after so and so.

So, again... what is the benefit?

Isn't it obvious? There's no mystery here, it was added to clean things up when people post 2, 3 times in a row.

I guess I never saw the problem with it before if the person was replying to 2, 3 posts in a row.

I could see the benefit if it only combined posts, and used a separator, in posts without quoted replies (where a person probably should've just edited their post and added to it in the first place rather than making a new post immediately in the same thread).

But mostly... I didn't know anything was broke until you fixed it...

    Exactly how I felt.

If people are posting one thought after another and they posts should all be combined, the solution is to pressure them to do so. I honestly haven't seen that hardly at all here.
Welcome to Pacers Digest! New around here? Here are three tips for making the forum a great place to talk about Pacers basketball.

    • Log in. Even if you want to read instead of post, it's helpful because it lets you:
    • Change your signature options. You can hide all signatures by choosing "Settings" (top right) then "General Settings" (middle left) and unchecking the box "Show Signatures" (in the "Thread Display Options" area).
    • Create an ignore list. I know it may seem unneighborly. But you're here to talk about the Pacers, not argue with someone who's just looking for an argument. Most of the regular users on here make use (at least occasionally) of the "Ignore" feature. Just go to "Settings" -> "Edit Ignore List" and add the names.

    Enjoy your time at PD!

OK, I was on PD without being logged on, and I have a theory about the situation:

I can only think of one reason why multiple uncombined replies are so annoying to some: the fact that these hideously tacky, long and cluttered signatures are repeated three times after someone writes three back-to-back posts.

I have sigs turned off, and I'm willing to bet that some of those complaining about the combine feature also have sigs turned off.

Back-to-back replies contain valuable information in the post count and time of each thought.

Corrupting valuable information (like the time that something was posted) just to limit the repititions in signatures and other brick-a-brack doesn't make sense to me, but then again, my theory could be wrong.

FWIW, I was just going to make a thread in the feedback forum saying the same thing LA did.

I have sigs turned off, but IMO I do think some peoples sigs are getting a little out of control.

For what it's worth I don't like the feature either. I don't see a problem with people making several posts in a row.

Hmmm . . . unless they are just doing it to increase post count. If that's a problem I would suggest doing away with post counts. Instead do like some other boards do and give them a title under there name, which could be based on post count or length of time as a member, or both.

    Lets see.

We did away with post counts a year ago. You can only see them when you do a member search.

I thought we also had set it up so that sigs only appeared once per thread. I guess not (I've had them turned off for years so that I can load pages on my blackberry).

I'm not really a fan of this feature, either, but I can see the need to clean things up a little.
Why do the things that we treasure most, slip away in time
Till to the music we grow deaf, to God's beauty blind
Why do the things that connect us slowly pull us apart?
Till we fall away in our own darkness, a stranger to our own hearts
And life itself, rushing over me
Life itself, the wind in black elms,
Life itself in your heart and in your eyes, I can't make it without you

It would also do away with custom titles.

I may be mistaken, but I thought you could choose a custom title even if you have a "rank" system so to speak.

I will admit I did see some problems with no subtance posts, but I really thought that getting rid of post counts was kind of darastic and I think this is as well. But Im just one person, and honetly while it is annoying I can still live with it.

I might be out of my league, but if you put in titles that people can easily see (opposed to the way we have the post counts buried now), won't that be just as likely to lead to people inflating their post counts in an attempt to get to higher "member levels"?

No, you are not out of your league, that is a valid point.

Just my .02, but I think like everything this place goes in cycles. You are going to have the occasional person who will aim at post counts but the beauty of the "ignore" feature can then be seen.

Of course the hope would be that said person would quickly grow up and not care about post counts, ince quality > quantity.
