Default Is there any way to turn off the auto-combine feature?

I hate it with a passion. Nobody likes it.

Why do we have it turned on?
Welcome to Pacers Digest! New around here? Here are three tips for making the forum a great place to talk about Pacers basketball.

    • Log in. Even if you want to read instead of post, it's helpful because it lets you:
    • Change your signature options. You can hide all signatures by choosing "Settings" (top right) then "General Settings" (middle left) and unchecking the box "Show Signatures" (in the "Thread Display Options" area).
    • Create an ignore list. I know it may seem unneighborly. But you're here to talk about the Pacers, not argue with someone who's just looking for an argument. Most of the regular users on here make use (at least occasionally) of the "Ignore" feature. Just go to "Settings" -> "Edit Ignore List" and add the names.

    Enjoy your time at PD!

Some like it, some don't. Hardly "nobody".

I don't understand the "hatred" some claim for it. What's the big deal?

Here's one problem I've already experienced: I use the "go to first unread post" arrow at the beginning of thread titles to efficiently cruise through the forums without having to re-read through a thread and try to remember where I left off.

If someone is the last to post in a thread, and I read it, then the software remembers where I left off in the post count.

Let's say that 15 minutes later, that person finds an article that proves a point that they are trying to make, perhaps even so that I personally would read it. They go to the thread and post it. The software as it is currently configured combines the new post with the previous post and does not update the post count.

Well, I'm completely **** out of luck because the thread doesn't get bumped, the software is telling me I've read everything that there is to read in there, and I assume that the conversation is over.

I've been trying to adapt my forum reading habits and look through old posts just in case I miss something, but that takes extra time and effort that I'm not willing to commit anymore.

Personally, I'd love to know when someone posts something new just by looking at the forum page, and not have the "back to back" ones screened out and (in a sense) hidden from me.

    Just my two cents.

Well, it's sure playing havoc with my post totals...

Seriously? I rather like it. I hope Jeremy will consider incorporating it when he gets the next vBulletin upgrade.

Veteran Austin Croshere, the longest-tenured Pacers player on the roster, has proven reliable when called upon, invariably ready to step in regardless of the circumstance.

Uh, to my knowledge it DOES bump the thread when there's a double-post.

Then I must be doing something wrong.

Turns out my visiting nephew was on PD on my computer last week. That must have been why things were marked "read".

    sorry.

Ironic that my two posts were a full day apart, and were auto combined anyway in a manner that makes them seem like one continuous thought posted at one time.

    Annoying, isn't it?

I will admit it doesn't work well when you're not quoting people.

I still like it when there is quoting involved.

I can easily add a divider, so people can tell where one post ended and another began.

Could be as simple as something like a line of "+++++" or "______________________"

    GREAT IDEA.

A long string of characters would be nice.

Well, I think that's a good length for the dividing line, what do you think?

The last one is too long for anyone with a 600x800 screen. I'd go with one of the first options. It's long enough, but won't force left to right scrolling to read posts.

I agree, the last one stretches out my screen and the scroll bar drives me crazy.

I still hate this feature, but this works out a lot better.

Thanks Hicks (and LA/ANthem for bringing this up)

1600 x 1200 (on a laptop ) but considering the old school is sort of automatic for me.

One other thing - can we possibly add a hard return after the line so that iw would look like this:
    This is the first post.
    _______________________

    This is the second post

    Instead of this:

Well, since people are confusing two posts with a post and a signature because the divider is the same type of line...
    --------------------------------------------------------------
    ------------------D-O-U-B-L-E---P-O-S-T------------------
    --------------------------------------------------------------
They sure as hell won't confuse this with one.
    --------------------------------------------------------------
    ------------------D-O-U-B-L-E---P-O-S-T------------------
    --------------------------------------------------------------
Well, that looks even sillier than I imagined. Back to the drawing board.
    ------------------D-O-U-B-L-E---P-O-S-T------------------
Let's see if this is any better...
    ------------------D-O-U-B-L-E---P-O-S-T------------------
    Actually, that's not so bad.

That version of the divider is already annoying the hell out of *me*, let alone the people who hate the feature in general.

    Let's try this.
    \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ \\
I like that better. It stands out from the signature line, but it's not such a freaking attention whore like the last one.
