Default Press Conference on results from board of governors meeting (semi-big news)...

All new rules to take affect next season:

-NBA teams will be allowed to purchase NBDL franchises. There will be a minimum of 4 teams added next year (12 total)

-coaches WILL be able to call timeouts from the sideline

-allow subs on all 20 sec timeouts (not just final 2 minutes)

-clear path fouls result in 2 FTs+posession

-players lined up for FTs are prohibited from touching or putting arms in front of person next to him

-players must be on the line for FTs or past FT line extended

-flagrant 1 fouls resulting in injured players can result in coach of injured player picking FT shooter if said player cannot continue

    Other notes:

-Stern reported record attendance and sales numbers this year for NBA merchandice, citing large sales increases in China

    - The feeling among the owners is that minor league basketball could really grow under direct ownership.

-On the tights issue: It will be discussed further, but its a "pretty strong" feeling among the owners that the rule will stick, except for health issues.

-Russ Granik is OUT as deputy commissioner. Adam Silver will take his place. He was unanimously elected to take Granik's position as deputy commish & CEO, effective july 1.

-Russ will take a special consultant's position until the NBA finds something to do with him (Stern joked that Russ's job will be just to do the 2nd round of the draft from now on).

-Heidi Uberroth was name to a newly-created position: president of globaly marketing partnerships. Esseintially, she is the new face of the NBA abroad.

It wasn't about being the team everyone loved, it was about beating the teams everyone else loved.

As always, thanks K-Stat for being so vigilant and bringing these things to our attention. THe most interesting thing here, of course, is the issue of minor-league basketball. I have been saying all along that we need to stop looking at the D-League as a joke and begin seeing it as a minor league like in baseball and hockey. As a fan of college basketball, I am afriad that the growth of the minor league system might hurt that level of the sport but as an NBA fan I am excited about the possibility for player development. This way, teams will not have to simply cut second round draft picks. The next key addition is that players in the NBDL cannot count against the cap. They do not in the new cap system in the NHL and this allows teams to develop players over time and bring them into the fold only when they are ready.

I've heard rumours that they were going to revamp the 24 second shot-clock violation rules. For instance, if a team forces the offense into a violation and the buzzer has sounded but the defence are already on their way to a fast-break, then play will not be stopped. Instead, the defence will be rewarded for their play.

That's just something that I heard they were going to address - did Stern make mention of any such thing?

How about changing the way the playoffs are set up? Right now it's unfair to lose a game and be rewarded for it like the Clippers were last night. Hear anything about that?

We'll take 2 - and pay all the players the max.

That way they can at least feed their families.

What's with the FT-line "no hands/arms" thing? They want everyone to just leap at the ball?

Makes it more of an effort-play to get a rebound off a missed free-throw. Instead of being able to block your man out before the shot even misses, you have to react to the shot.

That should make Jeff Foster pretty valuable down there.

You can box out, you just have to wait until the shot is in the air.
