Honestly, I couldn't make it through two episodes of Black Sails. I think it's a "me" thing with Starz series, though (except Boss, or maybe that factors in, I'm still outraged Boss was canceled even if it was probably a 3-4 seasons max proposition anyway given the limitations of protagonist's shelf life).

Black Sails just reminds me of Spartacus, which gave me similar issues. Historical setting, unnecessary sex that's actually obnoxious (I'm no prude, I thought Masters of Sex was the best new series this year, love most HBO & Showtime series, but sex in Starz series is so beyond the point it's just annoying to watch -- if I wanted to watch porn, I would watch porn), and although it's ridiculously early to make this claim, just a bunch of bland characters that don't really stand out from each other.

I really just think Starz doesn't "get" series. They ended their relationship with their award-winner, and keep doing the same thing over and over -- putting some softcorn porn historical action series on at terrible timeslots and wondering why their returns suck.
I'm with you on Starz series. The only one I ever enjoyed was Party Down. That show was fantastic. Great cast. There's just something campy about Starz shows. I can't put my finger on it, but it's there.

Oh, and the ending of True Detective was freaking nuts. Pretty bummed it's only an 8 episode mini-series.
I was under the impression that "True Detective" would keep going with 8 episode series, but with a different cast each season. So the arc around McConaughey & Harrelson ends after 8 episodes, and next season they pair up two new "detectives" and a new story/setting. I think Andy Greenwald touched on this in some of his columns/mailbags on Grantland.

I forgot about Party Down. Another great one canceled WAY too soon.

Boss & Party Down canceled after two seasons. Magic City etc. still live on. Sigh.

That was my understanding of it too, haven't seen any official announcements or anything though.

    Magic City is dead.

Spartacus started out campy as all hell but improved as it went along. It went from nothing more than a guilty pleasure to a decent show by the end.

I'm hopeful that Black Sails does the same but I've been unimpressed so far.

I enjoyed Spartacus. It wasn't particularly great (Rome on HBO is one of my favorite ever series and is seriously underlooked at) but it was entertaining and some fun action sequences

Sometimes shows need time to get their bearing
Don't ask Marvin Harrison what he did during the bye week. "Batman never told where the Bat Cave is," he explained.

Perfect length for this series, I think, and I hope it inspires HBO (or even Netflix) to try more things in this mold. Don't have to commit the budget/timeslot of a whole season, can still tell a compelling story over multiple episodes.

Really, something like Dune would kick ***, or if they would have done Watchmen that way (though obviously budget concerns there).
Yup, the short, non-traditional time commitment is why they could get the best actor on the planet right now along with Woody Harrelson. You could easily see other big name actors and directors coming in to do one-off series. Sci-fi would be tough though since even GoT budget wouldn't be enough to really do show like that right.

Thanks for the link, though the reference isn't doing anything for me. I'd be okay if they went into horror a little ambiguously, but it would feel a little uncertain if they introduced a totally new mythology at the last minute.

Shameless tonight...wow. I don't know if I've ever been more emotionally invested in a TV series. Tonight was an amazing, tough, rewarding, exhausting watch. And I get the sense it's just setting up the stretch run...

    Second Game of Thrones trailer:

This is the first season I'll be going into already knowing a lot of what happens (because I've now heard the audio books for the first three books and the first chunk of book 4), but I still can't wait to see it come to life.

I just finished Season 3 of The Sopranos. It's pretty messed up how Jackie Jr. exits the show.

I can't wait for The Game Of Throne to start back.

I'm seriously in Love with Daenerys Targaryen, aka Daenerys Stormborn, aka Khaleesi, aka Mother of Dragons.

I'm still watching True Detective. By episode 5 one major plot point started to make sense (with different pacing and a new scene or two it could've even been the climax of the series), but then they made sure and opened up some more to delve deeper. Great acting and I still don't know where it's all going. Although the info about the ties to the 1895 book and fictional play are very interesting indeed.
Nuntius was right. I was wrong. Frank Vogel has retained his job.

I'm not sure what to feel about True Detective. On one hand, I know it's brilliantly shot, acted, stylized, and is generally good for TV because it's a critical/commercial success that encourages networks to take chances on series that aren't formulaic/easy/"normal". It's a smart spin on the detective genre, really more an exercise in existentialism or Errol Morris-esque dissection of truth, than it is an episode of Law & Order or something like that.

That said, I really feel it's over-narrated, a bit too self-assured and a bit too propped up by fans. I personally think the "McConalogues" are a bit much, as constant as they are. I get that it's college-level stuff, I get that what he's saying is relevant, and I get that it's "smart writing". But while I enjoyed the hell out of Deadwood's Shakespearian ramblings, I'm just finding myself tuning out of the McConalogues over time. It's not even a call for more action so much as it is a hope this series stops being so masturbatory. That's the vibe I get from it right now.

You really better not look up the Youtube videos where they talk with the creator about insights and that jazz. I really like the show but that guy's sort of cringeworthy.

And the thing is...I'm generally a David Milch fan (I actually didn't like Luck that much, but John from Cincinnati was fine, and Deadwood obviously brilliant) so I'm not unfamiliar with writers/creators who make the series more about them than anything else. But in True Detective, I'm just not sure it always works. Glad HBO keeps taking these creative risks though (to whatever extent greenlighting a series starring McConaughey and Harrelson could be considered a risk).
