The Rules of Pacers Digest

Hello everyone,

Whether your are a long standing forum member or whether you have just registered today, it's a good idea to read and review the rules below so that you have a very good idea of what to expect when you come to Pacers Digest.

A quick note to new members: Your posts will not immediately show up when you make them. An administrator has to approve at least your first post before the forum software will later upgrade your account to the status of a fully-registered member. This usually happens within a couple of hours or so after your post(s) is/are approved, so you may need to be a little patient at first.

Why do we do this? So that it's more difficult for spammers (be they human or robot) to post, and so users who are banned cannot immediately re-register and start dousing people with verbal flames.

Below are the rules of Pacers Digest. After you have read them, you will have a very good sense of where we are coming from, what we expect, what we don't want to see, and how we react to things.

Rule #1

Pacers Digest is intended to be a place to discuss basketball without having to deal with the kinds of behaviors or attitudes that distract people from sticking with the discussion of the topics at hand. These unwanted distractions can come in many forms, and admittedly it can sometimes be tricky to pin down each and every kind that can rear its ugly head, but we feel that the following examples and explanations cover at least a good portion of that ground and should at least give people a pretty good idea of the kinds of things we actively discourage:

"Anyone who __________ is a liar / a fool / an idiot / a blind homer / has their head buried in the sand / a blind hater / doesn't know basketball / doesn't watch the games"

"People with intelligence will agree with me when I say that __________"

"Only stupid people think / believe / do ___________"

"I can't wait to hear something from PosterX when he/she sees that **insert a given incident or current event that will have probably upset or disappointed PosterX here**"

"He/she is just delusional"

"This thread is stupid / worthless / embarrassing"

"I'm going to take a moment to point and / laugh at PosterX / GroupOfPeopleY who thought / believed *insert though/belief here*"

"Remember when PosterX said OldCommentY that no longer looks good? "

In general, if a comment goes from purely on topic to something 'ad hominem' (personal jabs, personal shots, attacks, flames, however you want to call it, towards a person, or a group of people, or a given city/state/country of people), those are most likely going to be found intolerable.

We also dissuade passive aggressive behavior. This can be various things, but common examples include statements that are basically meant to imply someone is either stupid or otherwise incapable of holding a rational conversation. This can include (but is not limited to) laughing at someone's conclusions rather than offering an honest rebuttal, asking people what game they were watching, or another common problem is Poster X will say "that player isn't that bad" and then Poster Y will say something akin to "LOL you think that player is good". We're not going to tolerate those kinds of comments out of respect for the community at large and for the sake of trying to just have an honest conversation.

Now, does the above cover absolutely every single kind of distraction that is unwanted? Probably not, but you should by now have a good idea of the general types of things we will be discouraging. The above examples are meant to give you a good feel for / idea of what we're looking for. If something new or different than the above happens to come along and results in the same problem (that being, any other attitude or behavior that ultimately distracts from actually just discussing the topic at hand, or that is otherwise disrespectful to other posters), we can and we will take action to curb this as well, so please don't take this to mean that if you managed to technically avoid saying something exactly like one of the above examples that you are then somehow off the hook.

That all having been said, our goal is to do so in a generally kind and respectful way, and that doesn't mean the moment we see something we don't like that somebody is going to be suspended or banned, either. It just means that at the very least we will probably say something about it, quite possibly snipping out the distracting parts of the post in question while leaving alone the parts that are actually just discussing the topics, and in the event of a repeating or excessive problem, then we will start issuing infractions to try to further discourage further repeat problems, and if it just never seems to improve, then finally suspensions or bans will come into play. We would prefer it never went that far, and most of the time for most of our posters, it won't ever have to.

A slip up every once and a while is pretty normal, but, again, when it becomes repetitive or excessive, something will be done. Something occasional is probably going to be let go (within reason), but when it starts to become habitual or otherwise a pattern, odds are very good that we will step in.

There's always a small minority that like to push people's buttons and/or test their own boundaries with regards to the administrators, and in the case of someone acting like that, please be aware that this is not a court of law, but a private website run by people who are simply trying to do the right thing as they see it. If we feel that you are a special case that needs to be dealt with in an exceptional way because your behavior isn't explicitly mirroring one of our above examples of what we generally discourage, we can and we will take atypical action to prevent this from continuing if you are not cooperative with us.

Also please be aware that you will not be given a pass simply by claiming that you were 'only joking,' because quite honestly, when someone really is just joking, for one thing most people tend to pick up on the joke, including the person or group that is the target of the joke, and for another thing, in the event where an honest joke gets taken seriously and it upsets or angers someone, the person who is truly 'only joking' will quite commonly go out of his / her way to apologize and will try to mend fences. People who are dishonest about their statements being 'jokes' do not do so, and in turn that becomes a clear sign of what is really going on. It's nothing new.

In any case, quite frankly, the overall quality and health of the entire forum's community is more important than any one troublesome user will ever be, regardless of exactly how a problem is exhibiting itself, and if it comes down to us having to make a choice between you versus the greater health and happiness of the entire community, the community of this forum will win every time.

Lastly, there are also some posters, who are generally great contributors and do not otherwise cause any problems, who sometimes feel it's their place to provoke or to otherwise 'mess with' that small minority of people described in the last paragraph, and while we possibly might understand why you might feel you WANT to do something like that, the truth is we can't actually tolerate that kind of behavior from you any more than we can tolerate the behavior from them. So if we feel that you are trying to provoke those other posters into doing or saying something that will get themselves into trouble, then we will start to view you as a problem as well, because of the same reason as before: The overall health of the forum comes first, and trying to stir the pot with someone like that doesn't help, it just makes it worse. Some will simply disagree with this philosophy, but if so, then so be it because ultimately we have to do what we think is best so long as it's up to us.

If you see a problem that we haven't addressed, the best and most appropriate course for a forum member to take here is to look over to the left of the post in question. See underneath that poster's name, avatar, and other info, down where there's a little triangle with an exclamation point (!) in it? Click that. That allows you to report the post to the admins so we can definitely notice it and give it a look to see what we feel we should do about it. Beyond that, obviously it's human nature sometimes to want to speak up to the poster in question who has bothered you, but we would ask that you try to refrain from doing so because quite often what happens is two or more posters all start going back and forth about the original offending post, and suddenly the entire thread is off topic or otherwise derailed. So while the urge to police it yourself is understandable, it's best to just report it to us and let us handle it. Thank you!

All of the above is going to be subject to a case by case basis, but generally and broadly speaking, this should give everyone a pretty good idea of how things will typically / most often be handled.

Rule #2

If the actions of an administrator inspire you to make a comment, criticism, or express a concern about it, there is a wrong place and a couple of right places to do so.

The wrong place is to do so in the original thread in which the administrator took action. For example, if a post gets an infraction, or a post gets deleted, or a comment within a larger post gets clipped out, in a thread discussing Paul George, the wrong thing to do is to distract from the discussion of Paul George by adding your off topic thoughts on what the administrator did.

The right places to do so are:

A) Start a thread about the specific incident you want to talk about on the Feedback board. This way you are able to express yourself in an area that doesn't throw another thread off topic, and this way others can add their two cents as well if they wish, and additionally if there's something that needs to be said by the administrators, that is where they will respond to it.

B) Send a private message to the administrators, and they can respond to you that way.

If this is done the wrong way, those comments will be deleted, and if it's a repeating problem then it may also receive an infraction as well.

Rule #3

If a poster is bothering you, and an administrator has not or will not deal with that poster to the extent that you would prefer, you have a powerful tool at your disposal, one that has recently been upgraded and is now better than ever: The ability to ignore a user.

When you ignore a user, you will unfortunately still see some hints of their existence (nothing we can do about that), however, it does the following key things:

A) Any post they make will be completely invisible as you scroll through a thread.

B) The new addition to this feature: If someone QUOTES a user you are ignoring, you do not have to read who it was, or what that poster said, unless you go out of your way to click on a link to find out who it is and what they said.

To utilize this feature, from any page on Pacers Digest, scroll to the top of the page, look to the top right where it says 'Settings' and click that. From the settings page, look to the left side of the page where it says 'My Settings', and look down from there until you see 'Edit Ignore List' and click that. From here, it will say 'Add a Member to Your List...' Beneath that, click in the text box to the right of 'User Name', type in or copy & paste the username of the poster you are ignoring, and once their name is in the box, look over to the far right and click the 'Okay' button. All done!

Rule #4

Regarding infractions, currently they carry a value of one point each, and that point will expire in 31 days. If at any point a poster is carrying three points at the same time, that poster will be suspended until the oldest of the three points expires.

Rule #5

When you share or paste content or articles from another website, you must include the URL/link back to where you found it, who wrote it, and what website it's from. Said content will be removed if this doesn't happen.

An example:

If I copy and paste an article from the Indianapolis Star website, I would post something like this:

http://www.linktothearticlegoeshere.com/article
Title of the Article
Author's Name
Indianapolis Star

Rule #6

We cannot tolerate illegal videos on Pacers Digest. This means do not share any links to them, do not mention any websites that host them or link to them, do not describe how to find them in any way, and do not ask about them. Posts doing anything of the sort will be removed, the offenders will be contacted privately, and if the problem becomes habitual, you will be suspended, and if it still persists, you will probably be banned.

The legal means of watching or listening to NBA games are NBA League Pass Broadband (for US, or for International; both cost money) and NBA Audio League Pass (which is free). Look for them on NBA.com.

Rule #7

Provocative statements in a signature, or as an avatar, or as the 'tagline' beneath a poster's username (where it says 'Member' or 'Administrator' by default, if it is not altered) are an unwanted distraction that will more than likely be removed on sight. There can be shades of gray to this, but in general this could be something political or religious that is likely going to provoke or upset people, or otherwise something that is mean-spirited at the expense of a poster, a group of people, or a population.

It may or may not go without saying, but this goes for threads and posts as well, particularly when it's not made on the off-topic board (Market Square).

We do make exceptions if we feel the content is both innocuous and unlikely to cause social problems on the forum (such as wishing someone a Merry Christmas or a Happy Easter), and we also also make exceptions if such topics come up with regards to a sports figure (such as the Lance Stephenson situation bringing up discussions of domestic abuse and the law, or when Jason Collins came out as gay and how that lead to some discussion about gay rights).

However, once the discussion seems to be more/mostly about the political issues instead of the sports figure or his specific situation, the thread is usually closed.

Rule #8

We prefer self-restraint and/or modesty when making jokes or off topic comments in a sports discussion thread. They can be fun, but sometimes they derail or distract from a topic, and we don't want to see that happen. If we feel it is a problem, we will either delete or move those posts from the thread.

Rule #9

Generally speaking, we try to be a "PG-13" rated board, and we don't want to see sexual content or similarly suggestive content. Vulgarity is a more muddled issue, though again we prefer things to lean more towards "PG-13" than "R". If we feel things have gone too far, we will step in.

Rule #10

We like small signatures, not big signatures. The bigger the signature, the more likely it is an annoying or distracting signature.

Rule #11

Do not advertise anything without talking about it with the administrators first. This includes advertising with your signature, with your avatar, through private messaging, and/or by making a thread or post.

    Odd thoughts about beating the Wizards....

    Larry Bird, Donnie Walsh or whoever have only one job ahead of them for the next week. They need to be on the phone right now signing a big man from the D-league to a 10 day contract.

    By big man I don't just mean in height. I would not have a problem with Fizer on a 10 day because even though he is short he does have the girth that can play some in the middle.

    That is as long as Croshere is not ready to come back. Now if he is ready to return then this is a moot point but I have yet to hear a definate return date on this guy, which worries me because for a second concussion without signs & symptoms he ought to be back by now. I'm afraid that concussion was a little worse than we were initially led to believe.

    We were able to do this for a good while because we had several days between games & we did not have to travel so Pollard was able to heal after every game. Now with several back to back & even more multi games in a week with lots of flight time I strongly fear Scot's back will take a turn for the worse. Now they are saying he is suffering from Plantars faciatis as well.

    I just don't want Harrison & Foster beat to death having to play more min. in back to back games & God forbid that Pollard have to sit out some games.

    A 10 day contract will mean very little in terms of $$ for the team & in 10 days we can just let the person go back to the D-league or sign them for a second 10 day contract if Cro still isn't ready to go.

    Either way I want them making some form of movement to help the team & not force Jeff Foster to go back to Center & leave Danny Granger as our only powerforward.

    Moving on.

    Gilbert Arenas is the most under rated player in the NBA IMO. The guy can just flat out kill you & very few players can do anything to stop him. I knew when I used to see him play with the Warriors that he was going to be very good, I had no idea he was going to be this good. Win or lose I like to watch him play.

    It was nice that just for once Brendan Haywood did not turn into Pat Ewing vs. us. I get sick of seeing that guy tear us up.

    Etan Thomas actually had a very nice game for them though. If the guy would have hit his free throws he would have had as nice a game as Harrison had because he had 10 boards & 3 blocks himself he just happened to go 0-5 from the line & some of those misses made Shaq look like Mark Price from the line.

    Let's look at us.

    I about lost my mind at the 5 min. mark in the 4th quarter. Carlisle took Harrison out of the game & I thought that he was done for the night. The problem was that this was when David was on fire. I knew he needed a break but I had a feeling that he was going to be done for the night. I was more than pleasently suprised to see him re-inserted with about 4 min. to go in the game.

    A lot of players had good games & I'll try & touch on them here in a min. but David Harrison turned this game around. He had 2 monster blocks in succession late in the game & the reason that was important (besides the fact that he blocked the shot) is because at that time the Wizards started looking over thier shoulders for where David was & a few of them started pulling up for shots instead of attacking the rim. Arenas attacked the rim but he was rebuffed once & killed another.

    I said this before when he was playing poorly early on & I want to say it now again when he is kicking @ss. He was the last pick in the first round of a shallow draft, anything we get from him is almost a bonus. The fact that I think he will be the most significant draft pick since Dale Davis makes it even more of a bonus. I caveat that by saying Granger will probably be a better player & if he turns into the all-star many of us think he can be, he might be the most significant draft pick. But that is just splitting hairs because let's be honest, a front line of Granger & Harrison makes me very happy & I see that as the frontline of the future (the future begins next season btw).

    Also I don't want to make to much of this because I don't want this to turn into something I don't mean but I will say this with the hopes it's taken in the spirit I mean it.

    I love to see tough players gutting out minor injury's & over coming them on the floor.

    Please do NOT interpert that as a slam at any player past or present, it's only meant to be a compliment to David Harrison.

    Saras had a great outing. Whenever he can get that shot of his to drop he is so dangerous because he uses that to open up his passing lanes & hits the cutters for easy baskets. We are very fortunate that we have three quality guards to take the floor for us. I thought he did as well vs. Arenas as he could do, he certainly did not embarass himself & he often was able to make passes around Gilbert that frustrated him.

    I do see though that he took the Reggie Miller award for rebounds in a game.

    Jax. Very very solid game by Stephen. I was not only impressed with his shooting & his solid defense but I was also very happy because he seemed to be a willing passer both early & often. Sometimes I get aggrivated at him because he tends to hold the ball to long & takes some shots that I would prefer him not to take. Example that three down at the end of the 4th with over half the shot clock remaining when we needed to burn time. But other than that I thought he did great all night long in either making a quick move or making a fast pass.

    Peja. I don't know what it is about thier arena but Peja just cannot shoot in there. However what I love about him is that if his shot is not dropping from outside he doesn't John Starks it (sorry Rim) & continue to shoot himself out of a slump. He drives & either gets some short range shots or gets to the line or as is often the case both. He got to the line 9 times during this game & thankfully he hit all 9 times.

    On a side note wouldn't you hate to be the one player who would have missed a freethrow this game for us? Thank God noboby did.

    Jeff. I had no idea till I read the stats that he had 13 boards. It just didn't seem that much to me, but I guess he really must have packed them into a very short time. I knew he had a few boards but not that many. Not the best game he's ever played but once again he played smart & did a very nice job of rotating off of the screens on the defensive end.

    Scot. Like Jeff, not one of his best games, but also like Jeff a very smart game. He did a very good job of bodying up on Haywood & keeping him out fo the lanes & limiting him on the boards. I can tell that either his back is starting to flare up or his heels are starting to bother him because he now litterally is shooting flat footed outside shots. I know he's never been a big jumper but he usually got some form of lift from the outside, not now.

    Ed Gill. Thanks Eddy, I put up a post in another thread talking about how I had no problem with him, then he proceeds to go out & lay an egg on the floor. Let me pass my condolences on right now to anybody that might have the guy on a fantasy basketball team anywhere. That game was a stat killer.

    Now on the other hand I do want to say one thing. I sawEd Gill shut Gilbert Arenas down once on a drive & I've never seen anybody one on one put a stop to him. He litterally had his legs as far apart as he could get them & rotated on the baseline as quick as Gilbert did & kept in front of him the whole time. That was nice to see. However he just showed us on the offensive end why he is the 4th string p.g.

    Granger. I want Danny to stop being so d@mn passive & become more aggressive when he is on the floor. If I see him pass up an open shot again to pass the ball to Fred Jones I think my head will explode. Right now I am convinced there is nothing Dan can't do. Inside or outside I have no fear when he is looking for his shot. His only problem is night in & night out being aggressive on the offensive end. He never takes a play off on defense so that doesn't worry me & I'm not saying he takes offensive plays off, he just have to be more aggresive with the rock.

    All in all another great win for our team.

    We may no longer be one of the most talented teams in the NBA but I will say this for us, nobody outworks us on a nightly basis. I am more proud of that fact than I am of the fact that we have a winning record. It is a credit to the players the coach's & yes even the management that we now have a team that puts it on the line every night & only concerns itself with trying to win ballgames. I couldn't say that early in the season.

    Now let me address one personal issue. I would like to thank the many of you who have p.m.'d me asking me where my post game reports are or why I haven't posted much.

    To answer this simply I will say this. Every year I go through this, often times more than once, where I just feel as though I've become stale. While many of you see my "odd thoughts" posts as a post game summery they were never ever intended to be that. They are what they are called, just my odd thoughts & often times I think I've hit a wall with my ideas. I am not as fluid as Uncle Buck with my wordsmithing so often times I look back & think I've rambled on forever & at the end really said nothing. Sometimes I just have to step back & post on other peoples threads for awhile. Even now I am not very happy with the quality of this post but I think I'll go ahead & post it.

    I was going to say that I am not posting another odd thought until Able returns to regular posting but I hope it doesn't have to come to that.

    Ok, let's end this with some uplifting dancing by our favorite fruits. If you love the Pacers join in, if you love the NBA join in, if you love the Pistons go to he.......oops sorry that just slipped out Ok our Piston friends can dance to.

    Good read, Peck. And welcome back!

    I thought the rule for 10 day contracts late in the season was that more than ten days resulted in paying some sort of guarantee for the rest of the season? Now I'm not so sure. ONe of our league rule hawks can clarify.

    I think Harrison won the game for us, but I think he may have sacrificed several games after this. Will it have been worth it? I don't know.

    This game was as close to pure "indiana basketball" as I've seen us play all year. What I mean by that is they played the way I was taught to play: Smart decisions. Hustle. Accuracy. And winning through fundamentals. An old teacher used to alway tell me. "When you feel yourself slipping, stop thinking about slipping and only focus on the basics. When you are out of steam, you'll always be able to lean on the fundamentals. They will be second nature to you. You won't have to think about them." He added: "Mastery of the basics make lesser talents better players. Mastery of the Fundamentals make lesser teams beat better teams."

    We showed up with 9 guys, lost one of those for part of the game, and still beat a winning team in thier building. That's amazing. Sure, there was a lot of luck in it. But you know what? There's nothing lucky about preparation and effort. We showed both tonight.

        Lithfan, I think there's no shame in liking a player. After all sports is much about that - relating to a certain quality or person that inspires you. Dont you think?
        Anyway I appreciate your style (even though fanatic at times ). Keep it going... Saras or no Saras.

        Oh! and Peck - I too want to thank you. Interesting read as always.

            Jeff Foster last three games 13, 14, & 16 rebounds. The guy is the proverbial glass eater. Probably is just now starting to hit his stride after coming back from the injury. Plus we all know he's a total team guy who shows up on D, too. So I don't care if he can't hit outside 3 feet. However, I keep salivating over the possibility, given his improving FT shooting, that sometime in the not so distant future he'll be able to add a decent 12-16 footer to his repetoire.

            LA, I had the same concern about DH going so long and intensely on his ankle. He's young so hopefully he'll heal quickly.
            I'd rather die standing up than live on my knees.

                    Yeah, Rick actually kind of suprised me, in the good way yesterday.

                    But believe me, regarding the clock issue, DeS mentioned it yesterday and I've noticed it too. Basically I check the play by play after each game. And trust me, I can find easily minute when Saras plays. Rick indeed has substitution time pattern, especially in the beginning of each game.

                    First quarter 8-9 min subs come in. If they are good they start the second quarter and so on.

                        LA started a thread recently wondering where Austin's at. I think we're all getting a little concerned maybe something else is going on. Head trauma is not a good thing.

                            To answer this simply I will say this. Every year I go through this, often times more than once, where I just feel as though I've become stale.
                            I've read your posts for years so I knew you go though 'dry spells.' Even so, I did check to see if you were still posting, and when I saw your name online I knew you hadn't abandoned us.

                            Like everyone else I do enjoy your odd thoughts posts after games because you seem to be able to capitulate games better than anyone I've ever read.

                            On the other hand I think some of your thoughts truly are odd! (grin)

                              As a fan that watches every game, this was the most satisfying victory of the season for me.

                              I really admired DH for playing thru his injury. Jax toughening it out was nice to see as well. I have been very critical of Jax during his tenure with the Pacers, but he has gained a lot of my respect this year. It would be very easy for him to just set out a game here or there to allow himself to heal, but he is a true competitor.

                              Saras played very well. He has his weaknesses, which were obvious last night, but he absolutely had a positive affect on the team's play.

                              Finally, it was so refreshing to see the team's performance from the line last night. For me, I have always equated free-throw percentage to mental focus.
