The Rules of Pacers Digest

Hello everyone,

Whether your are a long standing forum member or whether you have just registered today, it's a good idea to read and review the rules below so that you have a very good idea of what to expect when you come to Pacers Digest.

A quick note to new members: Your posts will not immediately show up when you make them. An administrator has to approve at least your first post before the forum software will later upgrade your account to the status of a fully-registered member. This usually happens within a couple of hours or so after your post(s) is/are approved, so you may need to be a little patient at first.

Why do we do this? So that it's more difficult for spammers (be they human or robot) to post, and so users who are banned cannot immediately re-register and start dousing people with verbal flames.

Below are the rules of Pacers Digest. After you have read them, you will have a very good sense of where we are coming from, what we expect, what we don't want to see, and how we react to things.

Rule #1

Pacers Digest is intended to be a place to discuss basketball without having to deal with the kinds of behaviors or attitudes that distract people from sticking with the discussion of the topics at hand. These unwanted distractions can come in many forms, and admittedly it can sometimes be tricky to pin down each and every kind that can rear its ugly head, but we feel that the following examples and explanations cover at least a good portion of that ground and should at least give people a pretty good idea of the kinds of things we actively discourage:

"Anyone who __________ is a liar / a fool / an idiot / a blind homer / has their head buried in the sand / a blind hater / doesn't know basketball / doesn't watch the games"

"People with intelligence will agree with me when I say that __________"

"Only stupid people think / believe / do ___________"

"I can't wait to hear something from PosterX when he/she sees that **insert a given incident or current event that will have probably upset or disappointed PosterX here**"

"He/she is just delusional"

"This thread is stupid / worthless / embarrassing"

"I'm going to take a moment to point and / laugh at PosterX / GroupOfPeopleY who thought / believed *insert though/belief here*"

"Remember when PosterX said OldCommentY that no longer looks good? "

In general, if a comment goes from purely on topic to something 'ad hominem' (personal jabs, personal shots, attacks, flames, however you want to call it, towards a person, or a group of people, or a given city/state/country of people), those are most likely going to be found intolerable.

We also dissuade passive aggressive behavior. This can be various things, but common examples include statements that are basically meant to imply someone is either stupid or otherwise incapable of holding a rational conversation. This can include (but is not limited to) laughing at someone's conclusions rather than offering an honest rebuttal, asking people what game they were watching, or another common problem is Poster X will say "that player isn't that bad" and then Poster Y will say something akin to "LOL you think that player is good". We're not going to tolerate those kinds of comments out of respect for the community at large and for the sake of trying to just have an honest conversation.

Now, does the above cover absolutely every single kind of distraction that is unwanted? Probably not, but you should by now have a good idea of the general types of things we will be discouraging. The above examples are meant to give you a good feel for / idea of what we're looking for. If something new or different than the above happens to come along and results in the same problem (that being, any other attitude or behavior that ultimately distracts from actually just discussing the topic at hand, or that is otherwise disrespectful to other posters), we can and we will take action to curb this as well, so please don't take this to mean that if you managed to technically avoid saying something exactly like one of the above examples that you are then somehow off the hook.

That all having been said, our goal is to do so in a generally kind and respectful way, and that doesn't mean the moment we see something we don't like that somebody is going to be suspended or banned, either. It just means that at the very least we will probably say something about it, quite possibly snipping out the distracting parts of the post in question while leaving alone the parts that are actually just discussing the topics, and in the event of a repeating or excessive problem, then we will start issuing infractions to try to further discourage further repeat problems, and if it just never seems to improve, then finally suspensions or bans will come into play. We would prefer it never went that far, and most of the time for most of our posters, it won't ever have to.

A slip up every once and a while is pretty normal, but, again, when it becomes repetitive or excessive, something will be done. Something occasional is probably going to be let go (within reason), but when it starts to become habitual or otherwise a pattern, odds are very good that we will step in.

There's always a small minority that like to push people's buttons and/or test their own boundaries with regards to the administrators, and in the case of someone acting like that, please be aware that this is not a court of law, but a private website run by people who are simply trying to do the right thing as they see it. If we feel that you are a special case that needs to be dealt with in an exceptional way because your behavior isn't explicitly mirroring one of our above examples of what we generally discourage, we can and we will take atypical action to prevent this from continuing if you are not cooperative with us.

Also please be aware that you will not be given a pass simply by claiming that you were 'only joking,' because quite honestly, when someone really is just joking, for one thing most people tend to pick up on the joke, including the person or group that is the target of the joke, and for another thing, in the event where an honest joke gets taken seriously and it upsets or angers someone, the person who is truly 'only joking' will quite commonly go out of his / her way to apologize and will try to mend fences. People who are dishonest about their statements being 'jokes' do not do so, and in turn that becomes a clear sign of what is really going on. It's nothing new.

In any case, quite frankly, the overall quality and health of the entire forum's community is more important than any one troublesome user will ever be, regardless of exactly how a problem is exhibiting itself, and if it comes down to us having to make a choice between you versus the greater health and happiness of the entire community, the community of this forum will win every time.

Lastly, there are also some posters, who are generally great contributors and do not otherwise cause any problems, who sometimes feel it's their place to provoke or to otherwise 'mess with' that small minority of people described in the last paragraph, and while we possibly might understand why you might feel you WANT to do something like that, the truth is we can't actually tolerate that kind of behavior from you any more than we can tolerate the behavior from them. So if we feel that you are trying to provoke those other posters into doing or saying something that will get themselves into trouble, then we will start to view you as a problem as well, because of the same reason as before: The overall health of the forum comes first, and trying to stir the pot with someone like that doesn't help, it just makes it worse. Some will simply disagree with this philosophy, but if so, then so be it because ultimately we have to do what we think is best so long as it's up to us.

If you see a problem that we haven't addressed, the best and most appropriate course for a forum member to take here is to look over to the left of the post in question. See underneath that poster's name, avatar, and other info, down where there's a little triangle with an exclamation point (!) in it? Click that. That allows you to report the post to the admins so we can definitely notice it and give it a look to see what we feel we should do about it. Beyond that, obviously it's human nature sometimes to want to speak up to the poster in question who has bothered you, but we would ask that you try to refrain from doing so because quite often what happens is two or more posters all start going back and forth about the original offending post, and suddenly the entire thread is off topic or otherwise derailed. So while the urge to police it yourself is understandable, it's best to just report it to us and let us handle it. Thank you!

All of the above is going to be subject to a case by case basis, but generally and broadly speaking, this should give everyone a pretty good idea of how things will typically / most often be handled.

Rule #2

If the actions of an administrator inspire you to make a comment, criticism, or express a concern about it, there is a wrong place and a couple of right places to do so.

The wrong place is to do so in the original thread in which the administrator took action. For example, if a post gets an infraction, or a post gets deleted, or a comment within a larger post gets clipped out, in a thread discussing Paul George, the wrong thing to do is to distract from the discussion of Paul George by adding your off topic thoughts on what the administrator did.

The right places to do so are:

A) Start a thread about the specific incident you want to talk about on the Feedback board. This way you are able to express yourself in an area that doesn't throw another thread off topic, and this way others can add their two cents as well if they wish, and additionally if there's something that needs to be said by the administrators, that is where they will respond to it.

B) Send a private message to the administrators, and they can respond to you that way.

If this is done the wrong way, those comments will be deleted, and if it's a repeating problem then it may also receive an infraction as well.

Rule #3

If a poster is bothering you, and an administrator has not or will not deal with that poster to the extent that you would prefer, you have a powerful tool at your disposal, one that has recently been upgraded and is now better than ever: The ability to ignore a user.

When you ignore a user, you will unfortunately still see some hints of their existence (nothing we can do about that), however, it does the following key things:

A) Any post they make will be completely invisible as you scroll through a thread.

B) The new addition to this feature: If someone QUOTES a user you are ignoring, you do not have to read who it was, or what that poster said, unless you go out of your way to click on a link to find out who it is and what they said.

To utilize this feature, from any page on Pacers Digest, scroll to the top of the page, look to the top right where it says 'Settings' and click that. From the settings page, look to the left side of the page where it says 'My Settings', and look down from there until you see 'Edit Ignore List' and click that. From here, it will say 'Add a Member to Your List...' Beneath that, click in the text box to the right of 'User Name', type in or copy & paste the username of the poster you are ignoring, and once their name is in the box, look over to the far right and click the 'Okay' button. All done!

Rule #4

Regarding infractions, currently they carry a value of one point each, and that point will expire in 31 days. If at any point a poster is carrying three points at the same time, that poster will be suspended until the oldest of the three points expires.

Rule #5

When you share or paste content or articles from another website, you must include the URL/link back to where you found it, who wrote it, and what website it's from. Said content will be removed if this doesn't happen.

An example:

If I copy and paste an article from the Indianapolis Star website, I would post something like this:

http://www.linktothearticlegoeshere.com/article
Title of the Article
Author's Name
Indianapolis Star

Rule #6

We cannot tolerate illegal videos on Pacers Digest. This means do not share any links to them, do not mention any websites that host them or link to them, do not describe how to find them in any way, and do not ask about them. Posts doing anything of the sort will be removed, the offenders will be contacted privately, and if the problem becomes habitual, you will be suspended, and if it still persists, you will probably be banned.

The legal means of watching or listening to NBA games are NBA League Pass Broadband (for US, or for International; both cost money) and NBA Audio League Pass (which is free). Look for them on NBA.com.

Rule #7

Provocative statements in a signature, or as an avatar, or as the 'tagline' beneath a poster's username (where it says 'Member' or 'Administrator' by default, if it is not altered) are an unwanted distraction that will more than likely be removed on sight. There can be shades of gray to this, but in general this could be something political or religious that is likely going to provoke or upset people, or otherwise something that is mean-spirited at the expense of a poster, a group of people, or a population.

It may or may not go without saying, but this goes for threads and posts as well, particularly when it's not made on the off-topic board (Market Square).

We do make exceptions if we feel the content is both innocuous and unlikely to cause social problems on the forum (such as wishing someone a Merry Christmas or a Happy Easter), and we also also make exceptions if such topics come up with regards to a sports figure (such as the Lance Stephenson situation bringing up discussions of domestic abuse and the law, or when Jason Collins came out as gay and how that lead to some discussion about gay rights).

However, once the discussion seems to be more/mostly about the political issues instead of the sports figure or his specific situation, the thread is usually closed.

Rule #8

We prefer self-restraint and/or modesty when making jokes or off topic comments in a sports discussion thread. They can be fun, but sometimes they derail or distract from a topic, and we don't want to see that happen. If we feel it is a problem, we will either delete or move those posts from the thread.

Rule #9

Generally speaking, we try to be a "PG-13" rated board, and we don't want to see sexual content or similarly suggestive content. Vulgarity is a more muddled issue, though again we prefer things to lean more towards "PG-13" than "R". If we feel things have gone too far, we will step in.

Rule #10

We like small signatures, not big signatures. The bigger the signature, the more likely it is an annoying or distracting signature.

Rule #11

Do not advertise anything without talking about it with the administrators first. This includes advertising with your signature, with your avatar, through private messaging, and/or by making a thread or post.

I love reading Bill Simmons, but he's awful cruel to the Pistons in this article:

    Melo vs. Darko

Ever spent time trying to figure out Hickory High's box score the night it beat South Bend Central? What about arguing over who was better -- James Edwards or Bill Cartwright? Or determining the starting five for the Ken Bannister Memorial All-Ugly Team?

How good is Melo? He's hanging with the big boys out West.
Well, I have. I love arguing hoops. That's just me. So when Detroit drafted Darko over Carmelo last June, I felt like a lawyer handed a case I couldn't lose. This was a slam dunk. Not only had the Pistons pulled a Bartman, it was potentially a once-in-a-generation blunder -- right up there with Portland taking Bowie over MJ, or Coppola casting his daughter in The Godfather: Part III.

This isn't about Darko as much as it's about Melo. Ever notice how many Hall of Famers played in an NCAA championship game? This is no accident. Carrying your school to the title means something. Either you're a winner or you aren't. Throw in Bernard King's game, Dale Ellis' range, Magic's personality ... somehow, it still wasn't enough for the Pistons.

Like Paris Hilton, Melo was a sure thing. But teams can't help themselves from getting involved with the Darko du jour. NBA drafts are fueled by upside and more upside. Heck, if upside were a drug, every GM would be in rehab. Around draft time, you hear words like "long" and "athletic" much more often than "winner." One-on-one contests and jumping drills carry more weight than game tapes. Suddenly, someone like Reece Gaines is leapfrogging Josh Howard and Luke Walton. It happens every year, and nobody learns.

Maybe Darko is the wake-up call. Melo is averaging 24 since the break, and his impact on Denver's win total compares favorably with Larry Bird's on Boston's in 1980. And what about his age? At 19, Bird was driving a garbage truck, T-Mac was carrying Vince's water and even Kobe and KG were just getting their feet wet. But here's a baby-faced teen rejuvenating a scarred franchise in an impossibly tough conference.

And then there are the Pistons, one scorer away from being the equal of any of the bigwigs in the West. (Note: I'm in Vegas as I write this, and the Pistons are 10-1 to win the title. They'd be 5-2 with Carmelo. Don't blame me, I'm just the messenger.)

Pistons fans seem to be stuck in collective denial, like they're still hung over from drinking the Joe Dumars Kool-Aid. They all spout the same excuses:

    1. We didn't need Melo. And why is that? Because they already had Tayshaun Prince. Tayshaun Prince?! That's like passing up a free Ferrari because you already own a Miata. I see no brewing NBA subplot more intriguing than Melo and LeBron (certainly not Tayshaun and LeBron) battling for supremacy of the East every season, with the possible exception of Canada decriminalizing pot. C'mon, Detroit, who would you rather watch? Is this even worth discussing?

Smile Darko, you've got the best seats in the house for the playoffs.
    2. A bunch of teams wanted to trade up to get Darko, including Denver. Well, I'm definitely wrong now. NBA teams never screw up.

    3. You always go big over small. That's fine, except in this case, small was a mortal lock, and big was an 18-year-old Serbian project. There are no guarantees with projects -- just ask Shawn Bradley, William Bedford, Benoit Benjamin ... I could go on for days. More important, the Pistons already had a good team that just needed another option. Carmelo would have pushed them over the hump. The East sucks. Their window is right now, dammit. I swear, I might have a seizure.

    4. You need to be patient; just look at Dirk Nowitzki. Excellent point. Now, I'll let you in on a little secret ... like just about every other European, Dirk is soft. Hasn't gotten better in three years. Can't rebound when it matters. Still settles for his jumper instead of drawing contact. Couldn't guard Paul Mokeski ... now. I love watching the guy, but if he's your "best-case scenario" for passing up a future 10-time All-Star, you need to go back to the situation room.

And then there's this. How does it help Darko to spend his rookie season as a clumsy victory cigar, his frosted hair making him look like a misplaced troubled sitcom son? For godsakes, he's a sideshow. Meanwhile, Carmelo's success only illuminates Darko's failures. If the Pistons fall short this spring, the Carmelo backers will sprout like the pods in Invasion of the Body Snatchers. This sound like a healthy spot to put an impressionable rookie adjusting to life in America?

    5. Have you seen our Pistons since the Rasheed trade? We're doing just fine without Carmelo, thanks. Yeah, but you're still not going to beat the Kings or the Lakers. Trust me on this. And even if you do, you won't have the privilege of watching Melo in person for the next 15 years.

    Hey, there's always DirecTV.

Bill Simmons is a columnist for Page 2 and ESPN The Magazine, as well as one of the writers for "Jimmy Kimmel Live" on ABC

Tayshawn provides a guy that can defend many of the quick wing players in the NBA. Carmello can't defend the chair I'm sitting in. IS Mello better? DUH, of course. But Tay is a better FIT for this team.

    2. A bunch of teams wanted to trade up to get Darko, including Denver. Well, I'm definitely wrong now. NBA teams never screw up.
Well Bill Simmons should be a GM on an NBA club then, since at the same time teams wanted to trade up for Darko, he apparently had the secret info Darko isnt going to pan out. Congrats, swami.

    3. You always go big over small. That's fine, except in this case, small was a mortal lock, and big was an 18-year-old Serbian project. Um, the Pistons cant win the east now?

Darko has more basketball skills than those stiffs he mentioned. And this moron obviously doesn't know his history. William Bedford would have been a multiple-time allstar had he not had drug issues. It had nothign to do with lack of talent.

    4. You need to be patient; just look at Dirk Nowitzki. Excellent point. Now, I'll let you in on a little secret ... like just about every other European, Dirk is soft. Yeah, Dirk IS soft....but somehow, MELLO ISNT? Has he ever seen Mello play defense? The guy is a CREAM PUFF!

And now we find Billy is anti-european...um, all Euros are soft? Has he ever seen Andrei Kirilinko?

If the Pistons are lifting the trophy in June I will paste this article to every messageboard in america. oooh, im REALLY scared of the no-defense kings and lakers!

"privilege" yeah, just like all the other 20ppg SFs that cant play defense in the NBA....Lebron is a privilege. Mello is just another all-star.

Bill Simmons is anti-detroit, he always has been. Nobody takes him seriously, which is why he's on page 2.

It wasn't about being the team everyone loved, it was about beating the teams everyone else loved.

Re: This one's for Kstat, Pistons Dynasty, Liquid Slap, et al.

There can be no doubt that Carmelo is going to be a great player. I would never put him on the same level as Jordon. The funny thing about Anthony is that he still has upside too. Even if Denver doesn't make the playoffs, their run this year has been unbelieveable and Carmelo has a lot to do with this.

This being said, it is way too early to label Darko as a bust. With the overwhelming small number of centers in the NBA and especially the East, he could become a great center and make Detroit look good yet in this draft.

If you remember when we drafted Rik Smits, the idea was that he would backup for a few years to learn the NBA game and then he would play full time. Unfortunately, injuries forced him to start too early and he had some rough times. If Darko turns out to be the scorer Rik Smits was, he will have a very nice career.

Still, it is valid to question not picking up Carmelo in the draft. It's possible Detroit wouldn't have pulled the trigger on the Rasheed trade if they would have already had the scoring ability of Carmelo.

Give at least 3 years before you label Darko a bust, but if you want to say that it was a bad choice, I can't argue with that.

Kstat, I enjoyed your post, and I think we're pretty much right on in all of your arguments.

Simmons is anti-[insert any city outside of Boston]. I still think he's funny, but he recycles more jokes in his columns than anyone I can think of. No way should he be taken seriously.

It's part of both. Depending on who you ask in Russia, too. I'm an Asian Studies guy, don't get me started. :P
Yes it is part of both. And Moscow is in the Europe part...yay for asian studies.

Anyway, no one likes Simmons. That is all that needs to be said.

Detroit fans have been hearing this all year. In 2 years this guy is going to feel like a fool.

Don't you guys get tired of reading this Darko/Melo stuff? They are beating a dead horse.

I would understand if Detroit fans were pissed that we drafted Darko but NO, we are willing to wait but other guys aren't?? Makes no sense to me.

Let us be. Melo on a great defensive team? LOL Pistons would be giving up 90 points a night (which is to much )

Seems unfair to me to criticize the Pistons for taking Darko. They have a great chance to get to the Finals. Haven't we all learned that it takes 4 years for some rookies

Seems to me that people are forgetting Bill Simmons is a comedian who happens to be a big fan of Boston sports teams and the NBA in general. He's not a sportswriter, per se.

I always find his stuff hilarious, even the recycled jokes. He's no more or no less insightful than the typical season-ticket holder who's witnessed hundreds of games in person. In other words, he's on Page 2 for entertainment value, not to be taken seriously.
Why do the things that we treasure most, slip away in time
Till to the music we grow deaf, to God's beauty blind
Why do the things that connect us slowly pull us apart?
Till we fall away in our own darkness, a stranger to our own hearts
And life itself, rushing over me
Life itself, the wind in black elms,
Life itself in your heart and in your eyes, I can't make it without you

I read that in my ESPN magazine a few days ago. This guy is obviously blind and will be on the bandwagon soon. I don't know what's going to become of Darko; but I know one thing, it's worth the gamble. Here is why...

A Genie appears out of thin air. He gives you 2 options to choose from. You can pick whichever you like. He says to you "You have a choice, I can give you 1 million dollars cash right now or I will give you this scratch off lottery ticket. Let me tell you right now the scratch off has a 40% chance of paying off 500 million dollars. If you choose the scratch off, there is no turning back. Before making your choice, I must warn you that the whole process will be televised.

Scenario number 1: You are a bum. You lost your job 5 years ago, live on the streets and you are very sick .

Scenario number 2: You are Donald Trump making millions of dollars and you are living very comfortably in your life. You are real happy.

Now obviously, if you were the bum(Nuggets), you are not going to pass up a million cash to get you life back on track real quick.

If you were Donald Trump(Pistons) on the other hand, 1 million is a good amount of money but really wouldn't help too much. A chance to get 500 million on 40% chance sounds better because you have nothing to lose. If you win, you are buying real estate galor so you can obtain Bill Gates status. If you lose, eh, who cares. You are Donald Trump.

Okay, we've heard the Detroit people pound on 'Melo's D, but does anyone else feel that way. I remember discussing this a month or so ago, and there were a number of us who feel his D is adequate, especially for a 19 year old. Just think what a coach like Brown would do for him. And considering Brown is coaching, it's not like he'd be starting. He'd be instant offense off the bench, something Detroit still needs very much of.

Sadly, as seen here, Piston fans are in denial. Before the draft lottery, I prayed to the Basketball Jesus (Shuttlesworth, that is ) that Detroit wouldn't get the second pick from Memphis. Then they do, and they're stupid enough not to take Anthony. And back then, I had no clue that Carmelo would be this good. I did feel however that Darko was just Skita with a bad dye job.

Simmons echo's something I've been feeling lately, in that being "the next Dirk Diggler" isn't something to get crazy about. Instead, they could have had a guy who absolutely torched Artest the last time they played. But no, I guess it's better to win a title 5 years from now then one today. :shakehead:

The problem with that analysis is that No matter how good Darko gets, he will NOT be 500 times better than Melo. Trust me...

The reason why I pick Melo in their situation is that starting Carmelo instead of Tayshaun and bringing Prince off the bench does NOT make Detroit a bad defensive team. Not at all. But it makes them a hell of a lot better offensively.

The reason why I say they made the right choice is that maybe if they already had Melo, they don't pull the trigger on Sheed. For whatever reason, it could have made things completely different. The Pistons +Sheed are a contender for the East. As a homer I say they have a 25% shot at beating the Pacers. The Pistons +Melo (-Sheed) do not have any chance to beat this Pacers team.

Hindsight is easy. No one knows how good Darko will become. Five years from now, there will be SOMEONE saying I told you so, but RITE NOW, no one can know for sure. But what we do kno is that the Pistons are doing fine with or without Carmelo, and you cannot say that they would be better now with or without him. No one can say. Simmons was just putting forth his opinion and exaggerating for comedy.

If I was Dumars, I pick Carmello. But thats just my opinion. There is a 50% chance that I would've made the wrong decision.

Great post, Kegboy. Pistons' fans absolutely refuse to hear this argument. Although I can understand why they're tired of hearing it.

Detroit could afford to wait on Darko, Denver couldn't . . .

Pacers fants wont give Darko time, but Bender is being given 51 years to develop . . . too funny . . .

First, the story was exaggerated to get the point across. Second, quite honestly, you can't compare(Carmello will be better than Darko) the 2 because they play 2 different positions. That's like saying who is better, Shaq or Kobe Bryant. Third, my point is a all-star foward right now is cool. To get an all-star center is better. Now if Darko doesn't become an all-star, doesn't matter because we are Donald Trump(Pistons) and we can buy another all-star foward(Sheed) if need be , while still monitoring our investment to get a greater return and gain more stability in the long run.
