NBA All-Star brings together the top NBA players and performers for a week of competition, community service and world-class entertainment. Among the many events that reach more than 3.1 billion people in over 200 countries are the T-Mobile Rookie Challenge; Sprite Rising Stars Slam Dunk; Foot Locker Three-Point Shootout; PlayStation Skills Challenge; RadioShack Shooting Stars; NBA All-Star Jam Session presented by Nokia, the league's interactive event that attracts more than 100,000 fans each year; and, the 55th NBA All-Star Game on Sunday, Feb. 19.

Sprite is the world’s leading lemon-lime soft drink and has been the official soft drink of the NBA since 1994. The brand's association with the NBA and players like LeBron James help to reinforce Sprite’s straightforward attitude and “Obey Your Thirst” message.

Neither Robinson nor Warrick belong in the contest.

They may as well have invited Igoudala and Smith and let it be a 2-man contest if thats all they could get.

It's their way of getting out of being embarrased by having the top 30 dunkers in the NBA turn them down, so this way they can say "fine, we can't have you anyway."

I wouldn't mind if the entire all-star break were downsized. If I ran things, the first to go would be the dunk contest.

Nah, I'd rather have all-star weekend than nothing at all.

At least I still get to see Josh Smith, who is a legit top-5 dunker in the NBA.

Nate Robinson can jump out of the gym man. They're pulling the Spud Webb card on him especially since the defending champ pulled off a Nique last year. Why don't they force LbJ to join this contest???????

Not for me! I've never been a fan of the dunk. And I don't really understand why people like it so much.

The three point shooting contest is always the highlight for me.

If that's the rule, then why would the NBA try to break it and ask LeBron???

LeBron declines to dunk but accepts skills challenge
    Associated Press

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The NBA asked, and LeBron James said no.

James said Monday he declined the NBA's request that he participate in the NBA's All-Star dunk contest. He will, however, be in the skills challenge.

"They didn't beg or plead, I just declined," he said before the Cavaliers' game against the Charlotte Bobcats. "They asked me to do something else, so I said yes."

Cleveland's All-Star forward has declined to participate in the dunk contest in all three of his seasons. He did, however, play on the sophomore team in last year's Rookie Challenge and was a starter for the East in the All-Star Game.

He skipped the dunk contest his rookie year, partially because he was upset at not being picked as a reserve for the Eastern Conference's All-Star team.

Meanwhile, James was named the Eastern Conference's player of the week on Monday after leading Cleveland to a 4-0 record since Jan. 24. He averaged 33.8 points, 8.5 rebounds, 7.5 assists and 2.3 steals in the four victories.

It's the second time this season and fifth time in his career that James has won the conference's weekly honor. He was voted the East's top player in November.

The Cavaliers have won five straight since losing five in a row on a West Coast road trip. They entered Monday's game at Charlotte in second place in the Central Division.

I think being in one event is fine for him, even if it is the skills challenge. It's better than the guys that dont go at all.

It's not first and second year players only...LeBron was invited but turned it down. He then accepted the skills challenge...I have NO idea why. For what it's worth, I liked the old 8-player format better. But in the old 2000 days they had Vince, T-Mac, Stackhouse, Francis, players of that quality dunking.

    I LOVE the internet. lol

According to this guys blog, it's third year and under...

"The ever-evolving Sprite Rising Stars Slam Dunk Contest returns this year with the same small four-player field and the ridiculous revelation that only three-year professionals and younger may compete... or so we were told."

    http://probasketball.about.com/libra...ameguide_b.htm

But in the next sentence he says that Ricky Davis is participating, and that the NBA has no credibility, so who knows.

espn ran a line with the scores at the bottom of the screen saying "lebron james turns down invitation to compete in this years sprite slam dunk competition." you deff need more than 4 imo.
    1 - 2, Tinsley's coming for you.
    3 - 4, You're not a team no more.
    5 - 6, He's gonna plead the 5th.
    7 - 8, He's gonna stay out late.
