    Default Trade Protocol Question

Assume for a minute that the P's and GS DO complete this trade. Everyone assumes that the trade would not be completed until after we play GS on Thursday but, can a trade happen and the teams agree NOT to play the any of the traded players until after they meet? THey could easily site the need for so and so to complete a physical or that they are waiting for league approval etc. Can they do that?
Why should they? Simple, let's pretend they want to show compassion to long suffering, and very impatient, internet bloggers. Give us a bone and end our misery so to speak. I know it drives Hicks nutso to think of teams waiting until they have played to announce a trade but there ARE reasons to do that...like do we really wish to be the first team Ronnie faces once he gets back on the court? It would only be worse if it were a home court game there you would have fan reaction to deal with also.

I'm just hoping to hear of this soon.

BTW...my impression after watching the game last night....Murphy=Foster with a shot. My one worry looking at the stats....Pietrus SG ....shoots less than 70% freethrow accuracy.

The Warriors should fire Montgomery, I haven't seen defense that bad since Monday night from the Sonics. And they need Artest.

The trade should be made Thursday so Murphy doesn't play against us

I think the Warriors would be very, very stupid if they would aggree with the Pacers to not play the players involved, but do the trade afterwards.

The Pacers don't have Ron in the game anyway, so we are at a disadvantage, while the Warriors players, except Pietrus are game-ready. This would even things out in our favour, so I don't see that happenning.

In all that garbage I spewed I did have a legit question...can they complete a trade an agree not to play the traded players? Why would they do that? 1) To avoid putting the traded players in the position of immediately facing their former teammates and for some fans. 2) To stop the media circus and to get normalcy back into the players lives so they can focus on the games at hand. 3) Why not?

I aggree about Pietrus FT% btw Geezer, that's really something he needs to seriously work on, but he's just 23, so he should be able to improve it.

If the deal involves multiple players they would probably want them to play instead of being shorthanded for the game. When the Sixers traded for Webber last season his 1st game for the 76ers was against Sacramento.

The Artest situation is different because the Pacers are already shorthanded without him so it would make sense for GS to do the deal after the game.

Its my understanding that none of the players involved in a trade are permitted to play until all the players are reported to their new teams & passed a physical.

Usually there is a 24 hour gap in which the trade gets approval. in that time the players are no playing, they are in limb.
Furthermore they CAN decide to not play the players involved in the matchup between the two teams if they so desire, which could be a sensible decision, but is a mutual agreement not a league requirement, the 24 hours is however (other GM's can oppose the trade) so if they decide to do the trade tomorrow 6 PM then the paperwork won't get to the leagueoffice before Fri-morning and the players wont be eligible for Fri night.

Ron Artest was only hitting 61% (74 of 121) free throws this season and is only a 72% foul shooter for his career. Ronnie is a career 42% shooter from the field ans 31% from the line.

Mickael Pietrus is a career 69% foul shooter , 43% from the field and 34% from 3's their career shooting stats are pretty close.

You'd hope with Pietrus getting more time he averaged 18 minutes a night with the Warriors (for his career) his allaround game will improve including the free throw shooting.

To me if we end up with Mickael Pietrus , Troy Murphy and anything else for Ron and Jeff Foster , I'll consider it a pretty good deal.

Murphy will give the Pacers a screen and roll bigman we have not had since Brad Miller was traded and by all accounts Pietrus is an aggressive defender , who should improve overall with experience.

If the trade occurs before the Warriors game , I look for it to be right before game time , very similar to when the Nuggets were here and we traded to get Markm Jackson back. No traded players played in the game.

I think the only reason players do not continue playing with their original teams while waiting for a deal to be consummated is that the GMs do not want to risk injury. A player gets injured and the deal is off.

I can't remember who, but I remember at least one game around the trading deadline a couple years ago where players from both teams sat out because they were traded for each other.

However, it would put GS at a disadvantage. I think the only way Mullin would agree would be if he was worried another team may make a better offer.

Troy Murphy plays Thursday against the Pacers and he knows the following day he'll be traded to the Pacers, would he consider helping his new team win before he even gets there? Maybe a few convienent misses? Or a few accidental missed defensive assignments? Ofcourse his farewell present would probably include a thorough beating at the hands of his teammates, so maybe not lol.

Yes I remember that too. I think it was the Raptors and Nets during the Vince Carter trade but i'm not certain.

It also happened here when Donnie dealt Vincent Askew, and Eddie Johnson and reacquired Mark Jackson and LaSalle Thompson from the Nuggets. Thompson was injured at the time so we made a seperate trade with the Nuggets Jerome Allen for Darvin Ham , because of injuries we were allowed to dress Ham , who played the last 2 minutes for the Pacers.

The other 4 involved in the deal were not allowed to play. This happened Feb. 20 , 1997.
