I remember when we were championship contenders as well.

It was the 99-00 season & then for reasons that I will never understand it was all taken away.
I'm curious. I've seen it well-documented how that team broke up. Trade requests, expiring contracts, retirements, etc. What's not to understand? Or do you have a revisionist take on it?

    Yeah, me neither.
It was a couple of years back, I know you remember. And it still isn't funny.

Everyone's talking about 03-04, what about 99-00? Or even better, 97-98, when we came so close to beating the Bulls.

But seriously... let's wait to see who we get in a trade before we write this team off. There's a lot of season left.
99-00? If Travis Best didn't hit that 3, we all would have had an early vacation and demanding a youth movement. The East wasn't strong and we barely made it out of the first round.

97-98, now that was a season!

I've come up with a slogan: "Pacers 03-04: Ignorance is Bliss."
    ??? What do you mean?

After the loss to the Knicks, DW decided that team had run its course. He decided NOT to offer extensions to a major cog or two, and he decided to trade another of the cogs for his own Marcus Camby project straight out of HS who since has retired after playing 2 NBA games in 6 years (or something that feels like that). Meanwhile, he ignored Rik Smits' declining performance and frequent pain issues (and talk of retirement) while over-valuing him.

So the wheels were set in motion for all that followed in the summer of 2000... except the fact DW was admittedly surprised when the team went all the way to the Finals in 2000.

Or is that the revisionist version?

Nuntius was right. I was wrong. Frank Vogel has retained his job.

If we bring Al back, does that make us contenders again?

    And it's still hilarious.

If you are talking about the Milwaukee series, I will say this. If Travis had not bricked his previous 13-14 shots, that shot would not have mattered.

The main stat that I remember from the final game of the Laker series is 32-3. Shaq outscoring Smits by that margin. Why Bird insisted on keeping Smits in the game in that fourth quarter is what still puzzles me.

He decided not to offer extensions to a major cog or two? Care to be more specific there? And he decided to trade another of the cogs for his own Marcus Camby? Didn't he do that before the '99-00 season?
