Robert Mathis continued to build on his torrid start to the regular season in the Indianapolis Colts' victory at Houston last Sunday, and the NFL took notice.
The veteran defensive end has been named AFC Defensive Player of the Week after setting a Colts record with a sack in his seventh consecutive game. Mathis, who registered a career-best 10.5 sacks in 2004, leads the league with eight sacks.
Against the Texans, Mathisí sack of quarterback David Carr resulted in fumble that defensive tackle Montae Reagor scooped up and returned 37 yards for a touchdown. Mathis also was credited with four tackles and a quarterback pressure.

On the season, Mathis has 25 tackles to go along with his eight sacks and team-high five forced fumbles. He also shares the team lead with 14 special-teams tackles.
