Colts place LB on suspended list
August 30, 2005 INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- The Indianapolis Colts placed linebacker Kendyll Pope on the reserve-suspended list Monday for an NFL-imposed penalty.
Colts coach Tony Dungy, citing confidentiality issues, declined to comment on the length or reason for the suspension. NFL spokesman Gregg Aiello said he could not comment on the matter, but that the league is expected to make a statement Wednesday.
``That's a disappointing one,'' Dungy said. ``Kendyll was doing very well, he was doing things we thought he could do and that's very disappointing to us.''
The Colts were hoping Pope, a second-year player from Florida State, would help solidify their linebacking corps. Now Pope will start this season the same way he did last year -- watching his teammates.
Pope spent most of last season on the physically unable to perform list with a torn hip flexor. He wasn't activated until the final two games when he made three tackles.
In training camp, he was slowed by a shoulder injury.
Pope is the second Colts player to draw a league-imposed suspension this season. Starting safety Mike Doss will miss the first two games for violating the league's policy on personal conduct. He pleaded guilty in June to a misdemeanor gun charge.
The Colts also claimed safety Dexter Reid off waivers from New England. Reid is a second-year player who was an intriguing prospect for the Colts.
``He's a physical guy, who is a good special teams player,'' Dungy said. ``He's a good guy and a good athlete and we'll get a chance to see what he can do, for a few days at least.''
