New court dates set for brawling Pacers

ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich. (AP) - New court dates have been set for the Indiana Pacers players charged for their roles in the November brawl with fans at Detroit.

The players' lawyers had objected to having the cases assigned together to Rochester Hills 52nd District Judge Lisa Asadoorian. Oakland County Circuit Judge Fred Mester recently ordered that the cases be reassigned by a blind draw.

Judge Julie Nicholson will preside in the cases involving Ron Artest, Jermaine O'Neal and Stephen Jackson, with a pretrial hearing Sept. 23, the court said Friday. Judge Nancy Tolwin Carniak will hear David Harrison's case, with a pretrial hearing Sept. 19. Asadoorian will hear the case against Anthony Johnson, with jury selection Sept. 16.

The Nov. 19 brawl at The Palace of Auburn Hills started after Pistons center Ben Wallace shoved Artest following a hard foul. After they were separated, Artest was doused with a beverage, causing him to rush into the stands and begin beating a man he thought had thrown the drink. Some of his teammates joined him in the stands and also clashed with fans on the court.

The players and fans awaiting trial are charged with misdemeanor assault and battery. They face a maximum penalty of 93 days in jail and a fine of up to $500.

thank you FOX news and AP for admitting it.

What's grabbing him by the throat and shoving him back against the seats?

I don't what you would call grabbing him by the throat and shoving him back against the seats - but what you DON'T[I] call it is a BEATING!

In my world a beating always involves blood, bruises and at least one punch being thrown.

You need to learn the difference between a noun and a verb. I'm not going to take the time to do that here - I'm sure there are plenty of online guides.

I'm also not sure how grabbing a guy by the throat is yelling at him.

You might want to take a look at the video again where Artest shoves the guy in the throat and face and pushes him down in the seats.

You also may want to read up on the terms assualt and battery and how they play a role in law.

Threating action is just as bad as following through.

There does not have to be blood, guts and tears to have battery just a simple placement of your hand another human being.

I think "rush into the stands and begin beating a man" can only refer to one person in the entire history of sports. An that person played for Detroit.

Uh, the word "beating" can be either a noun, a verb or an adjective. I'm sure you knew that though.

According to Dictionary.com the word beating means:

    1. To strike repeatedly.
    2. To subject to repeated beatings or physical abuse; batter.
    3. To punish by hitting or whipping; flog.

    1. To strike against repeatedly and with force; pound: waves beating the shore.
    2. To flap, especially wings.
    3. To strike so as to produce music or a signal: beat a drum.
    4. Music. To mark or count (time or rhythm), especially with the hands or with a baton.

I guess you were referring to Artest's rap music when you said

What's grabbing him by the throat and shoving him back against the seats?
Or maybe you saw Artest flapping his wings.

Yeah, but Cobb was old-school, though....he actually beat a guy with his own leg......

It wasn't about being the team everyone loved, it was about beating the teams everyone else loved.

Cobb takes out frustration on heckling fan
    By Larry Schwartz
    Special to ESPN.com

    May 15, 1912

For the past several games, fans at the Yankees' Hilltop Park have been unmercifully riding Ty Cobb. Finally, the Detroit Tigers hot-tempered outfielder can't take it anymore. In the fourth inning he goes into the outfield stands, where he beats up one of his tormentors.

The fan, Claude Lucker, is missing one hand and part of the other. Among other things, he has allegedly called Cobb a "half n--ger."

"He struck me with his fists on the forehead and over the left eye and knocked me down," Lucker said. "Then he jumped on me and spiked me in the left leg, and kicked me in the side, after which he booted me behind the left ear. I was down and Cobb was kicking me when someone in the crowd shouted, 'Don't kick him. He has no hands.' Cobb answered, 'I don't care if he has no feet!'"

Cobb is ejected from the game. After he is suspended by American League president Ban Johnson, his Tiger teammates will strike for a game before Cobb urges them to end their walkout.

Ole Vernon Maxwell got in about 10 good punches went he went after that fan.

My only point is that Ron did not beat anyone. If anyone here has ever been in a fight then you should know @#%* well what a beating is and what it aint. I have personally been on both ends of a beating and can say with the utmost confidence that what Ron did was not even in the same neighborhood as a beating.

Seems nobody here reads any more. I suggested that someone else learn the difference between a verb and a noun but here's a hint:

    a beating = noun
beating on (which the article used) = verb

The two are not identical. Now Artest didn't start beating on anyone, nor did he deliver a beating but it would still be nice if people understood the difference between the two and didn't misrepresent the article - while saying that the article misrepresented what happened.

Artest assaulted the guy in the stands. Attacked would also work. But I wouldn't characterize what he did as beating on him. I always figured that meant kicking, punching, hitting with a club, etc. Now maybe if he hadn't been grabbed he would have started beating on the guy after he shoved him over the seats and to the floor but we'll never know that.
