Default I just realized I have assumptions on the race of posters here.

Okay, it's slow. There was a mention about race on one of the current threads. (Picking white guys last in pickup games or some such.)

So, I'll go ahead and post some thoughts I've had just recently about the racial profile of the members on the forum. It's likely to cause a few sparks. I may be accused of racism, which wouldn't be true based on my intent. (But might be true based on my blind spots--I'll let others provide the proper commentary if that's the case.)

Anyway, it ocurred to me that, for example, I tend to assume that Kstat is black. Probably because of his longtime Rip avatar. But maybe he's actually white.

I tend to think of Anthem and Soup as white--also because of their avatars. For all I know, they both are black.

I tend to think of Jermaniac as black, perhaps because his name is associated with JO.

I'm white. But I just added a pic of McKey as an avatar. Will some now assume I am black?

What about Foretaz? (assuming he's not purple). Does a Vanessa Williams avatar cause black or white assumptions?

If my memory is serving me correctly here, I believe that when I read the most recent roll call thread, the information listed by many there allowed the ability to learn their race (I can't remember the nature of figuring this out--did several guys post their pictures?). I think I was surprised that some guys were white, other guys were black.

ANYWAY . . .I was just slightly intrigued.

A couple of questions to start:

    1. Do others of you find yourselves making these assumptions?

    2. Is it okay to make such assumptions--as in, its just part of being human? Or, do some of you think it deserves a little examination?

I'll put on my bullet-proof vest now.

Since you have never seen the person all you have to determine from is what they write or what is on their avatars. I just think it is a human thing but I may be wrong. I am white.

I find myself curious about it. I don't know that it's an active curiousity, but at some subconscience level, I'm sure it's there. To me, it's a lot like wondering if someone is a man or woman.

My honest belief is that every person on some level is predisposed to associated certain attributes with certain races. For instance, I grew up in Fishers. I am white and the high school I attended at that time was predominantly white. The majority of my exposures to ethnic cultures came from movies, TV, or second-hand stories. I later found myself with a half-dozen hispanic workers on my staff as an adult. I quickly found myself making assumptions based of my limited understanding of their culture. Very quickly, I learned that most of them were extremely exaggerated. Some of them weren't. The key to me was understanding that at some level I had those predispositions and learning to look a little bit further beyond them to judge the real person.

I now do general contracting and find myself in all sorts of neighborhoods and cultures. I still find myself making snap judgements about a person because of their ethinicity/race and then having to recollect my thoughts and approach it more rationally. It's like a habit. I can't explain it really. However, I think it's fairly prevelant in most people. I don't believe it makes them a racist though. I think it's just part of being a human. What makes you a racist/bigot in my opinion is when you decide that a certain style of life associated with a race or culture is wrong or not as good as your own. To assume something of someone because of their physical properties is human nature. To believe that are a worse person or inferior to you because of it is racist.

It's such a delicate subject though, and it's easy to hurt feelings because of it. You always worry that by talking about it, in some way you're admitting to being a racist and so you don't talk about it. So in saying that, I hope I haven't hurt feelings or given the impression I bear racist feelings.

I think it's an interested topic you've brough up though McKeyFan. Hopefully we can have a polite discussion about it. I'm just as interested as you.

I have found myself dividing the forum into different groups but I have never given any thought to a posters race or gender before.

So awhile back did you think I was blue..... and dead?

My father is white and my mother is hispanic, which I think makes me a white with a nice natural tan, or maybe I'm a really light hispanic.... err whatever. Whenever forms on surveys, tests, and such ask for my race, I always fill in the circle next to 'other,' just to send them for a loop.

I find myself making the assumptions you were talking about, although it wasn't always race. For example, after reading that Peck was an paramedic, my mind always associated what I thought of as a typical EMT paramedic with his posts.

I do also associate Anthem with Monk.

Of course, after seeing your guys' pics of the forum party, a lot of those strange assumptions went away. I still can't shake picturing Buck as John Candy, though.

That's one thing I like about forums like this. We can guess, but we can't really know. In a way I like living far enough away that I can't come to the parties. I just have to judge what people say without having any knowledge of what they look like.

Really, I think that's probably the coolest thing about sports. It doesn't matter what you look like, what you sound like, or anything except whether you can ball. There is judge no argument against who scored more points.

It would be fun to argue with some of these guys face to face.

I'm of the mind it matters not... And if there are any to whom it does matter, then they are probably better off not knowing....

Mostly I think I'll grab some popcorn with Gnome and stay away from this landmi...errr thread (not that I think McKey Fan meant anything bad by the topic).

Depends. Is this while delivering pizza to white people?

And are you 5'9" standing up or lying down?

When I had Lindsay Lohan's driver's license as my avatar this past winter, someone hit on me via PM.

I changed it the very next day.

I have, but not much. I usually give more thought to a posters age. Sometimes you can tell which generation someone is from by their comments.
