Default Someone please point me to NBA Financials 101

At the risk of looking a little ignorant, I'm going to admit that I really still don't know much about the financial side of the NBA. I understand players, and I understand basketball and strategy and all that. But I don't really know the basics of salary cap, luxury tax, assumable contracts, large markets getting to spend more than small markets, cap space, etc.

I was wondering if someone could send me to an article or two that does a good job of explaining it simply. Now, don't send me something 10 pages long--I won't read it, probably for the same reason I haven't taken the time to figure all this stuff out yet. But I do think I'm ready to learn a little Financial 101. Thanks for any help you guys can give.

Larry Coon's FAQ is the best one, but it's all about to change due to the new CBA. Give it a month.

There's also a lady that keeps a good website/ database... the name escapes me.

For those of that do business/ financial consulting in this area, we look to a publication from Paul Kagan and Associates called "The Business of Basketball." Of course, I'll never buy this personally, I'll just look at the copy at work, because it costs about $1,500 every time its updated (usually annually.)

This is quite complicated, expensive lawyers and financial analysts spend a lot of time haggling out the fine points. Anything you see that tries to sum it up in a page or two is either over-simplifying, or just plain wrong.
Why do the things that we treasure most, slip away in time
Till to the music we grow deaf, to God's beauty blind
Why do the things that connect us slowly pull us apart?
Till we fall away in our own darkness, a stranger to our own hearts
And life itself, rushing over me
Life itself, the wind in black elms,
Life itself in your heart and in your eyes, I can't make it without you
