Artest Scores 23 but Pacers Lose

By Bobby Ciatti | Minneapolis, July 15, 2005
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
After trailing for all of the first three quarters, the Houston Rockets took their first lead of the game on Lonny Baxterís short jump hook with 1:10 left in the the fourth quarter. Houstonís fourth-quarter explosion for 32 points spoiled Indiana forward Ron Artestís return to competitive play as the Rockets were victorious 72-64 over the Pacers in the Minnesota Summer League Friday in Target Center.
Artest started strong for the Pacers, scoring 11 of their first 18 points. Artest showed his offensive versatility by knocking down long jumpers and driving to the basket. Still showing some rust after his layoff, Artest committed sloppy turnovers in the second quarter and led the Pacers with five turnovers. Artest energized the crowd in the fourth quarter with a backcourt steal and an open dunk, which brought some of the fans to their feet.

"Ron played well," said assistant Dan Burke. "He played within the team framework and played hard. He made good decisions and tried to play the right way."

The Pacers controlled the game for most of the first three quarters, in large part to the play of center David Harrison in the middle. After Harrisonís emphatic dunk with 2 minutes left in the game gave the Pacers a 63-58 lead, it looked like Indiana would coast to victory, but Harrison was called for a technical foul on the play.

"David Harrison played hard," said Burke, "but he's got to learn to play without fouling."

Houstonís free throw shooting in the last 2 minutes was the difference as they paraded to the line. Houston scored their last eight points of the game at the line, while Indianaís offense faltered late. After Artest missed a wild runner with 22 seconds left, Houstonís Pat Carroll hit two free throws to make it 68-64. Another Indiana miss led to Harrison committing his seventh personal foul. Since there is no fouling out in summer league games, Harrisonís seventh personal foul resulted in a technical foul and more free throws.

Jonathan Bender, who missed most of the last two seasons with knee injuries, made the first of two scheduled summer-league appearances and scored eight points in 26 minutes, but was 2-of-8 from the field.

"He looks like he hasn't been practicing with us," said Burke. "But he played freely and looks like he feels good. And he said he had no pain when the game was over."

Indiana will have a chance at redemption tomorrow afternoon when the play the Toronto Raptors at 3 p.m..

My favorite line of that article is "He had no pain when the game was over". Step in the right direction for JB.

    Thanks for the info, UB.

Check out Harrison's line. I don't like the 7 fouls, but I really like the 15pts and 4 blocks!!!

Also, we got killed in the rebounding department: 42-26.

The Hulk played very good looking at the stats, 15 points, 4 blocks and 5 boards is a very good line in 26 minutes but those 7 PF are kind of scary. He is still fouling alot but he will fix it.

Also what a contribution from our bench in this game. Those 6 points from the bench where huge lol

I wonder if the 7 fouls has something to do with conditioning? When you're tired, it's easy to stop moving your feet on defense and start hacking away with the arms. I didn't see the game so I wouldn't know.

Maybe it's a psychological thing; no limit on the fouls = hack away, and be aggressive?!

I think he has been held out of full contact drills so far, could just be a timing thing.

Is that right that Harrison had two technical fouls. Looks like that is what the Box score says.

Well his second tech was because he went over 6 fouls.

I wonder if his first tech was for hanging on the rim after that dunk, or.... no David would never berate the refs, he is too perfect.

David has to stop hanging on the dang rim, I doubt they have a back up rim in SL games.

If the refs are anything like in Vegas, I don't blame David.

Y'know, until this thread, I didn't realize you had unlimited fouls in summer league play. I was wondering how the hell Hulk managed to get 7 fouls.

I just want to point out that we were told Bender's knee was doing good at more than a few points last season during his rehab sessions. These were followed by him playing minimal minutes or no minutes and then joining the IR list.

Nuntius was right. I was wrong. Frank Vogel has retained his job.

Like I said, I want to see him play a few back-to-backs before I believe this is anything more than an attempt to stay off that "permanently injured" list.

Also, Bender looks like he bulked up a little in the upper body, but he's still got stick legs.

Robert Horry has a similar body type. If he gave us Horry like production I would be happy.
