Exclamation Pacers sign Alex Poythress to two-way contract.

This will make some of you happy.

    From Pacers.com:
    Pacers Sign Alex Poythress
The Indiana Pacers announced Tuesday they have signed Alex Poythress to a two-way contract.

Poythress, a 6-7, 238-pound forward out of the University of Kentucky, spent a majority of the 2016-17 season with the Fort Wayne Mad Ants, the Pacers' affiliate in the NBA G League. With the Mad Ants, he averaged 18.5 points and 7.1 rebounds in 46 games.

He was called up by the Philadelphia 76ers on April 1, 2017 and played in six games with the Sixers. In those six games he averaged 10.7 points and 4.8 rebounds

I thought we already had Sumner and Ben Moore on 2 way contracts...apparently I was in error.

Sumner is a two-way. Ben Moore will be an affiliate player with the Mad Ants so any team can sign him away from us.

Backup SF & backup C needed help IMO. Adding Poythress helps that backup SF position. Now we need an upgrade @ backup C. Seraphin would've set the roster. I like Poythress better than I do GRIII

GR3 can play 2 or 3 Poythress plays 3 or small ball 4. They are different players. GR3 is further along in development.

Good defender, very athletic. Like a lot of guys, needs to work on his shooting. Though he actually shot well with the Ants, but on low volume though. Still young, could still turn into a useful role player.

Interestingly, his agent is also PG's agent (Mintz), so at least there seems to be no hard feelings there.

Can't say I know much about him other than him being around last season but surprised to see him given a two-way deal rather than another Ants deal.

Do these 2 way contracts count against the # of Players the # of roster spots that we can have on the Team?

    Aren't we at 15 alreay?

I'm confused about how these 2 way contracts work.

You still have your 15 man roster (13 dressed ).2 way players will be with the Mad Ants, but can play with the main squad for 45 days in a season if called up.the best part is no other team can sign your 2 way players, but anyone else on the Mad Ants can by another team. Hope that helps a little bit.

Great news! This guy can play and has already shown the ability to hit the 3 ball.

So, he counts as part of the Pacers 15 man roster?

Given that they probably don't earn that much....if we need to clear a roster space to accommodate a 2 for 1 type trade.....we can just waive them.

Is he guaranteed for the rest of the season from a salary POV?

No, you have a 15 man roster plus 2 two-way players. So we can have 17 players now, just two of them are different than the rest.

I was hoping that we would sign him to the 15 man roster, so being able to get him as a two-way player is a plus. He earned a roster spot with how he played for the Sixers at the end of last year.

I'm not impressed. He didn't impress me at Kentucky, and I'm a U of K fan. He's nothing more than an end of bench player in the NBA, period.

I think we need help at backup C and starting SF. Neither Bojan nor GRIII are NBA starters but both are good to come off the bench for 15-20 mpg.

Not really excited about this one, but it's a very minor move. No harm, no foul.
First time in a long time, I've been happy with the team that was constructed, and now they struggle. I blame the coach.

I wouldn't be surprised to see in certain match-ups, Thad as the starting SF. Especially with KP stressing increasing size at all positions.

I think Poy should have received a full contract but with only one roster spot open (maybe 2, if (should) Wilkins be waived), KP maybe leaving the door open for a trade or a training camp stand out.

Signing Poythress to a two-way is a huge win for the Pacers. We get his exclusive rights and can let him develop as a SF in the DLeague. Plus he doesn't count against the salary cap. I don't see any advantage of signing him to a full contract. Maybe he becomes a free agent after his two-way contract expires? Nope, looks like he becomes an RFA as long as we call him up for 15 days. I guess some team could throw a huge contract offer at him next summer that we wouldn't want to match.

-Anyone with three or fewer years in the NBA can sign. Players sign a one- or two-year contract. At the end of the contract, the NBA team can tender a qualifying offer.
-Players can earn up to $275,000 if they meet requirements.
-Players can spend a maximum of 45 days with the NBA team while on the deal. Teams can tender qualifying offers to players they want to keep longer than that.
-Players who will be designated two-way contract guys will receive $50,000 in training camp (paid by the D-League and not a salary cap hit).
-Players accrue Bird rights while on two-way contracts and are subject to restricted free agency at the end of their contracts if called up by their NBA team for at least 15 days.
-NBA teams retain rights to two-way players, so other teams canít poach them.
-Two-way players can be traded but not until 30 days after they were signed.
    http://www.deseretnews.com/article/8...-hopefuls.html

He seems to have all the intangibles you want in a player except his height doesn't match his skill set. He's more of an insider player than a wing. If the Mad Ants can turn him into a legit SF then he could be really good.

I'm curious why the 76ers didn't sign him. They haven't signed any two-way players yet. I thought he played well for them at the end of the season. Maybe they offered him a two-way but he preferred the Pacers.
