Exclamation Potential 2018 pieces to pursue

So this isn't a trade thread but rather a scenario thread to look at some additions we can make to the roster in the Summer of 2018. We need a point guard and a PF going forward so some possibilities include...

Kemba Walker (CHA). By this time next Summer? Kemba will be entering the final year of his contract. At 28 years old. He's rarely sniffed the playoffs as a member of the Hornets. If next season concludes with no playoff berth or another 1st round exit, he might ask or float a demand for a trade. I think he'd make a great choice for our point guard even at the age of 28. Would be Teague's age when we got him. Except Kemba is more offensively talented than Teague. I think it would be a risk though because unless he agrees to sign an extension immediately, not sure how much KP would be willing to give up for him.

Marcus Smart (BOS). Much younger than Kemba, 23 years old. Not the shooter or scorer Kemba is but at age 23 Marcus has much room for offensive improvement. I believe next Summer he'll be a RFA so any deal we throw at him would have to be massive to scare Boston away from re-signing him. Marcus would be a great point guard of the future if his offensive (shooting) game continued to come around. But again, as a RFA we'd need to throw him Tim Hardaway Jr. numbers.

Boogie Cousins (NO). He's talented enough to move Myles to the PF spot and see how that works. It all depends on though how this season goes in NOLA, and if NOLA cannot afford to put more pieces around him and AD. Also if AD starts floating any possibilities of leaving the team after this coming season there's no way they re-up Boogie's contract. They'd trade AD, then try and S&T Boogie, collect a box full of assets and rebuild.

Tobias Harris (DET). If the Pistons have another no-playoff season, and Bradley leaves in free agency. I could see them moving Tobias's last year of his contract for a pick or something. Because at that point, it would be time for a rebuild. Which means Drummond and Reggie would also be out the door. But we'd have no interest in them. Tobias at the PF spot though would be great.

I want a young PG with potential like Dante Exum. Then focus on Klay Thompson for the 2019 off season.

I'm going through Spotrac's list of Free Agents that will be available in the Summer of 2018 and saw that they listed Robert Covington as a UFA. The guy is 26 years old and is one of those swiss army knives type of SF......solid on defense and rebounding and doesn't need the ball on the offensive end to be effective.

Unless you are suggesting that we pursue him through a trade.......according to Spotrac, Kemba is a UFA in the Summer of 2019....not in the Summer of 2018.

    Marvin Bagley would be nice.

None of those guys do much for me; Dante Exum even less so.

Cousins and Smart would be great. But probably won't happen. Perhaps we should look at new coaching candidates

Can't we just get Vogel back? It wouldn't be that bad - it's like reuniting with an ex....happens all the time
"So, which one of you guys is going to come in second?" - Larry Bird before the 3 point contest. He won.

Yeah we'd have to get Kemba via trade. As I posted, he would be ENTERING his final contract year as of NEXT Summer. Kemba is a 1 time all-star PG who at age 28, who would be an expiring contract if we acquired him this time next year. So I cannot ascertain his trade value in terms of what we'd have to give up unless he agrees to an extension, and we've seen how that works out. It wouldn't surprise me if he was traded at the deadline next year if the Hornets come out of the gate stumbling and bumbling.

I'm drooling over the potential to get Bagley or Porter Jr. I think they'd change this franchise. Either one would fit what we need since we have a hole at SF (Porter) and need a big next to Turner (Bagley). I don't think we'll be bad enough unless we get really lucky on lottery night.

I think that you have to roll the dice, and sign Lebron.

I mean sure, but think of the cap space. We gonna miss out on all that future talent without it. Cap space > LeBron

The guaranteed salaries of the late first rounds that they'd get in S&T deals should be enough to get it done. If not we'd throw in the rights to foreign born thirty somethings that will never play in the NBA...

The question comes down to filling out the Starting lineup.

    Starting Lineup:

    PG - ?????
    SG - Oladipo
    SF - ????
PF / C - To be filled through some combination of Myles/Sabonis/Leaf

I am going to assume that our Starting SG and PF/C rotational ( both Starting and Backup ) minutes will be filled. Unless Sabonis and Leaf are going to be considered backups.....I'm going to assume that some combination of Myles/Sabonis/Leaf will take up the bulk of the PF/C minutes.

That would leave long term needs at the Starting PG and SF spots. Since I prefer to have Lance come off the bench as the 6th Man getting Starter Minutes.......I'd suggest that we do not have anyone in the roster now that will fill those long term positions.

Given whatever Salary Cap Space that we have....I'd suspect that we can either split the $$$$ pretty much evenly or spend more on one position and less on another.

IMHO...I'd prefer to spend more $$$ on a higher end Starting Quality PG and then less on a Starting quality SF ( likely one that is considered more of a 3D Role Player ). For a Starting quality SF.....I suggested Robert Covington. I don't think that he will be super expensive ( at least compared to other Starting Quality SF ), he's young, he's a quality Rebounder/Defender and is a UFA. I'd have to see who else is available....but that's the guy that I'm targetting.

As for a long-term Starting PG....I do not know who we can go after.

But that's my plan.....fill out the Starting PG and SF spots between now and the Summer of 2019. That's our greatest need for the long term.

I think the plan in the future for KP will be a high-powered SF and a high-powered PG. Those pieces combined with Oladipo and Myles growth will make us contenders again. I thought about Klay Thompson but Klay already seems to be falling off a bit. He's 27 now, by the time his free agency arrives in the Summer of 2019 he'll be 29 years old. Not sure we would give a max deal to a SF with lots of mileage on his body turning 30 soon.

Wiggins and Kat over in Minny could be options but unless the owner Glen Taylor royally screws up, I doubt either of those guys are not extended by next Summer. I don't think Anthony Davis is a legitimate option. He has a player option in the Summer of 2020. Unless he demands a trade before then.

I think we're likely to focus on PG like Marcus Smart and maybe Elfrid Payton in 2018. At SF, a guy like TJ Warren or Robert Covington would be a good target. Honestly, I'm really hoping that we're in the running for Michael Porter Jr and Marvin Bagley. I think we need a guy like that so bad.

Elfrid Payton? Orlando doesn't even want him.

That may happen. We may be (lucky) enough to obtain a top 5 pick in the next draft. We're going to have a really bad season.
