I'm currently consulting with a medical research firm (may end up working full-time if opoid treatment gets approved). One of the major concerns is actually edibles. The effect can be so delayed that it can be dangerous (ie operating a car when it hits). Also people can consume too much and send themselves into cardiac arrest. Some studies have also shown chronic smokers have a higher risk of high blood pressure.
So I really have a hard time seeing recreational MJ getting approved.

On the medical side, it has it's benefits; however, the success rate for all this "miracle" cures people throw around is very low. So low that if they had to go through the same clinical trials and held to the same standards as the Pharma companies are, treatments would never be approved.

Now as far as the hemp plant itself, that is where the benefit truly is. Paper, roads, rope, biofuels, clothes (though very scratchy), and many other things. It's fibers are amazing.

It certainly doesn't help but as you said driving while drunk is much more reckless and drinking is legal. Plus, driving while texting is even worse and it's unfortunately quite common.
Oh, agreed. I just don't think it's as innocent as some proponents of weed want to portray it.

Alcohol and coffee aren't innocent either but they're totally legal.

Lol okay. Once again, if you read what I said, it's a ton to have on you in public. It doesn't take nearly 20+ blunts to go through an ounce. It should be somewhere around half of that and under for an average blunt that is intended to pass, and that doesn't factor in some people (usually with a lot of excess money) that like to blow an ounce for whatever reason. And weed is cheaper in Cali and Colorado than Indy in my experience, because a lot of the good stuff in Indiana comes from those places and prices are adjusted accordingly. Just saying, if you have a decent sized group of friends and you really got it like that, just sounds like a great time that ends with a serious nap. It's definitely excessive for my taste, but I could see a player providing for his friends, and maybe even saving some for after a few games.
And I didn't argue anything about jail time, I know a crappy legal system when I see one. But with prop whatever passing, it sucks for him that it's still a felony. He should have waited until whenever it actually comes through (idk when that is, but is has to be soon).
I'd say its probably very similar to the same player buying tons of table service bottles of alcohol at a club for the exact same reason - to roll large. It doesn't even have to be an ego thing in the traditional showing-off sense. If Bird had a backyard BBQ and let everyone drink his beer for free, that's not different. You're the man, you like having the ability to be the life/supplier of the party and bringing a ton of beer, pot or food all falls into the same kind of "really I'm just a nice guy" mentality. The whole point in those situations is having a ridiculous excess that says "we will never run out, live it up without concern".

Should someone enable casual friends/strangers to party hard? Should weed being viewed the same as alcohol? These are certainly discussion points. But at the core of what happened here it seems likely to me that Zach was not in the role of thug/dealer. He was in the role of the guy that brought enough weed for everyone to party as much as they can or enough beer for everyone to drink all night or enough food to last all day. That doesn't make it totally innocent or mean he's not a bit foolish to put himself in that position, but this is not The Wire either.

With the abuse of drugs sweeping our country I have doubts many will be laughing.
Keep in mind that our laws AND SOCIAL POV have ENABLED the opioid epidemic while also fueling the private prison industry with small time weed users. Looking at all the cigarette and alcohol based legal damage that was allowed while going over the top against weed is going to look silly (already does). That's not the same as just wanting everything to be legal or saying there are no ill affects to these substances.

My dad was an alcholic. It ruined his life. He lost relationships, jobs, had serious car wrecks and in the end shortened his life (cigarettes contributed too). He wasn't an abusive drunk but he sure as hell wasn't "my dad" when he was drunk.

But thank god he didn't touch the weed.

This I agree with and I am pretty anti-weed, but treating it like it's a hard drug is errr... IMHO not the right approach.

On a moral/ethical level I do think it's like buying alcohol. But buying 3k worth of beer doesn't get you jail time.

It's very, very hard to believe that someone would buy illegal drugs at that level and give it away just because they're a nice guy.

The money isn't the issue, it's the risk being taken.

Just a quick not to the guy who said they would seize Randolph's car, house, etc....

You watch too much TV. Prosecutors have to link the dirty money to a car/house payment. Usually that's easy, because dealing drugs is where all the money comes from. Randolph has a large source of legitimate income, and tying significant drug money to his assets would be a very hard sell to a judge.

I said it and no they don't. They can, and will, take your stuff. Property seizure is being looked at all across the country.

Muncie had a big problem with local DTF seizures. They were (are) taking property and auctioning if off with no charges brought and then dumping the cash into the DTF bank account instead of sending it to he general fund. So it happens and it happens a lot.

You are missing the point and you have experienced it first hand. Plus I am not really referring to weed. I am talking about all the other drugs being abused.
It points to something deeper that people feel the need to do whatever drug is used as a coping mechanism.
Yes, lets legalize more(all) drugs. You solve one problem and maybe contribute to other problems. Legalizing may be the lesser of two evils. Maybe.
In either case it is bad for society.

You're the only one that's talking about all the other drugs being abused. Everyone else is talking about marijuana since this was the drug that Zach Randolph was arrested with. If he was arrested with meth we'd be talking about meth.

Report: Zach Randolph charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession, resisting arrest

Earlier this month, the Sacramento’s new backup big man Zach Randolph was arrested in Los Angeles on a felony —
possession of marijuana with intent to sell, because he had so much on him. Randolph’s attorney called the charges misleading, and Rasheed Wallace came to Randolph’s defense saying Randolph doesn’t sell.

The Los Angeles District Attorney got a look at the case and has dropped the charges down to two misdemeanors, reports TMZ Sports.

But now, prosecutors have reduced the charges down to misdemeanor possession of more than 1 ounce of marijuana and misdemeanor resisting arrest.

If convicted on both counts, Randolph faces up to 1 year in jail — but since it’s his first arrest, he likely won’t spend another minute behind bars.

Most of the time, cases like this are pled out, with the defendant paying a fine and doing some community service. However, because Randolph could face discipline from the league he could choose to fight the charges.

The NBA has a comprehensive marijuana policy in place. On a first positive test, players are sent to an education, treatment and counseling program. The NBA fines players $25,000 for a second marijuana conviction/positive test, then players are suspended five games for a third violation. However, if there is an arrest and conviction/guilty plea the league office can fine or suspend a player earlier in the process. In this case, the league office will let the legal issues play out before taking action, if it takes any at all.

The Kings PR staff has to be cursing the gods. After starting his career in the Jail Blazers era in Portland, during his time in Memphis Randolph was seen as a model player who was active and giving in the community, with no real scrapes with the law. Sacramento signs him this summer (two years, $24 million), and this comes down. Obviously, this is not on the Kings organization, but they would like to catch a break
