Default Brunner QOTD, Are Pacers Working Out Draft Prospects?

Are Pacers Working Out Draft Prospects?
    Thursday, June 23, 2005
    QUESTION
    OF THE DAY
    Conrad Brunner

    Q. I saw that the others teams in the NBA are already hosting players for pre-draft workouts. Are the Pacers doing this too? If so, who are they hosting? (From Alex in Montreal)

    A. The Pacers are nearly done with their pre-draft workouts involving roughly 17 prospects, but they have chosen to keep those names private. Team President Larry Bird revealed Wednesday that shooting guards Francisco Garcia (Louisville), Luther Head (Illinois) and Rashad McCants (North Carolina) were among the players the Pacers have worked out, but no other names have been made public by the team.

There are two very different schools of thought when it comes to dissemination about pre-draft information. Some teams used the pre-draft workouts as a chance to generate fan interest and publicity and release not only the names of the players they bring in, but make them available for interviews with the local media. The teams with the top eight picks all have publicized their workouts. Of course, because they weren't in the playoffs, their primary opportunity to generate some local hype during the offseason is the draft.

Sitting in the middle range of the first round, the Pacers prefer not to offer any public indications of their intentions. As Bird said Wednesday, "We don't like a lot of our information out there." It's the way they've done business for years and, given their success despite disadvantageous position in the draft, isn't likely to change.

At hoopshype they have a list of who has worked out. By my count Isiah has had 68 players in for workouts in New York. Seems to me he's trying to work out everyone available.

Peanuts! I wanted Garcia too. Back to the drawing board!

Ok, I've heard, Matt Walsh, Bracey Wright, Kennedy Winston, Danny Granger, Rashad McCants, Luther Head, and Francisco Garcia. That's 7 guys that the Pacers have infact, worked out.

Could be, but the Pacers do take people they work out. So here's the list I came up with.
Bird admited the following three have worked out.

    Francisco Garcia . . . 6'7 sg
    Luther Head . . . . . . . 6'3
    Rashad McCants . . .6'4 sg

Hoopshype has these three working out for the Pacers.

    Jamel Staten . . . . . .6'6 sf
    Ike Diogu . . . . . . . . 6'8 pf
Rudy Fernandez . . . .6'5 sg (Took his name out of draft)

Fig has heard these have worked out.

    Matt Walsh . . . . . . .
    Bracey Wright . . . . . 6'2 1/2 sg
    Kennedy Winston . . .
    Danny Granger . . . . .6'8 sf

And another article has the Pacers interested in these three international players.

    Roko Ukic . . . . . . . . 6'5 pg
    Yaroslav Korolev . . . .6'9 sf
    Fran Vazquez . . . . . 6'10 pf

"It's just unfortunate that we've been penalized so much this year and nothing has happened to the Pistons, the Palace or the city of Detroit," he said. "It's almost like it's always our fault. The league knows it. They should be ashamed of themselves to let the security be as lax as it is around here."

Which... is... why... the... Pacers... worked... him... out???

Actually, Granger has as much chance of being a Pacer next season as Bracey Wright does.
