Well if it was only his rookie season it clearly didn't help him...

Former Colts OL reveals team used illegal hearing aids to help a young Peyton Manning

Patriots fans are going to love this. It turns out the team that sparked Deflategate, the Indianapolis Colts, also happened to be engaging in a little rule-bending of their own. At least according to former Colts OT Tarik Glenn.

Peyton Manning’s old blindside protector told the Indy Star that during Manning’s rookie season, offensive line coach Howard Mudd had the line wearing hearing aids to help drown out crowd noise on the road.

    Via the Indy Star:

“We were playing on the road, it might have been Peyton’s rookie year, and it was really loud,” Glenn said. “Peyton hadn’t mastered the silent count, so (former offensive line coach) Howard Mudd had us wearing these hearing aids that were supposed to muffle the crowd while projecting the quarterback’s voice.

“Peyton said, ‘Hike,’ and I didn’t hear him. Everybody moved and I was still on the line of scrimmage. My man ran right by me. I turned around and yelled to Peyton, ‘Watch out!’. He didn’t hear me and he got sacked. When I got back to the huddle, I told him I had yelled. He said, ‘You couldn’t hear me, so what makes you think I could hear you?’ I thought that was pretty funny. Peyton didn’t think it was that funny at the time, but we laugh about it today.”

Using an unauthorized communication device is obviously illegal, and you have to wonder how long after Manning’s rookie year the system was used.

What was meant to be a funny anecdote may very well turn into a full-on investigation. At least it should. The NFL has to at least look into the story, because this would have given the Colts a far bigger advantage than Tom Brady may have enjoyed from allegedly letting some air out of footballs. Especially for Manning, who was renowned for making changes at the line of scrimmage.

I'm no hearing aid expert, but that seems like a pretty complicated device. we sure he's not just talking about ear plugs?

Big surprise that this was started by #1 Pats apologist Mike Florio. Stampede Blue had an article on this. Drew Brees wore earplugs when the Saints played in Seattle a few years ago, and the NFL stayed silent. No rules were broken here. Pats fans can go back to being hopelessly paranoid about somebody one day exposing their organization and tainting all their success.

Does anyone know if this is actually illegal?

EDIT: Apparently, it isn't illegal after all:

Doesn't matter they got what they wanted "clicks" I saw a headline on MSN.com about how this helped him

Yeah those three wins was a rookie season of the ages.... once people saw that they don't care outside of Pats fans.

Too bad it's not illegal. I was looking forward to defending the Ideal Noise law.
