If that were true people wouldn't be spending money on attending the actual games
Which market are you talking about? NY, LA, Chicago, even Boston are all going to still fill their arenas even if the team sucks and is playing another team that sucks. The population of people who want to go to any given game for reasons other than seeing good basketball is in high multiples of the arena size.

In Indianapolis or other small markets the arena sells due to star power coming in or the basketball being good. No one is scrambling for tickets for other reasons.

It is still talking about averages, which says nothing about the distribution. If the "haves" are having incredible sales but the "have nots" are not, that's still a problem even if taken as a whole the league is up.

It depends on the goals. As a sports league, they provide competition. As an enterprise, they expect to do whatever makes the most money. I would like them to at least have some semblance of item 1 as part of item 2. Otherwise, why not just be the WWE?

    http://www.espn.com/nba/attendance

They aren't struggling to fill the arenas. Even the worst of the worst are making plenty of money on live attendance. The Kings are the worst run franchise in sports yet were in the middle of the pack.

Nothing about the NBA is broken.

For a basketball focused state like Indiana to be that low in attendance is a you problem. Not NBA

    Scores from the 2003 finals
    101 - 89
    87 - 85
    94 - 79
    77 - 76
    93 - 83
    88 - 77

Scores from the 1998 finals - Bulls last championship
    88 - 85
    93 - 88
    96 - 54
    86 - 82
    83 - 81
    87 - 86

    Scores from 2017 finals
    113 - 91
    132 - 113
    118 - 113
    137 - 116
    129 - 120

OK, my obvious point is scoring has gone way up, even from what many thought was one of the best NBA finals ever 1998. Me personally, I don't mind a 79-77 game, but I heard for years and years that the NBA is so boring with scores under 100, well no longer a problem

Just one way the NBA is not broken

I don't care about how high or how low the scores are. I'll enjoy anything as long as we have some quality competition. The competition is as low as it's ever been. I mean both Finals teams sweeping their way to the Finals.....followed by a 4-1 Finals. That's really about as bad as it could possibly get. The good news for me is that the awful quality of the NBA playoffs frees up some nice time in the springs to go outside, do yard work, play golf, etc. I

Yeah, it's an embarrassing to see the top half of the arena empty most of the times

Meanwhile, I look at that and see another sign the NBA has a problem. It's no longer a chess game of strategies, it's just a question of whose threes are dropping on a given night.
Nuntius was right for a while. I was wrong for a while. But ultimately I was right and Frank Vogel has been let go.

No, I completely disagree. There is as much if not more coaching now. Defenses have to defend out to 24 feet - something they never used to do.

Scores from the 1984 finals, which is widely considered the best ever:

    104-137
    129-125
    103-121
    108-119
    102-111

    Was that "broken basketball" too?

People seem to refuse to believe, strategies change and players improve more in subtle ways that can change the meta of the NBA.

It's a shame because you go back one year and the playoffs were actually in decent shape overall. I mean the East was of course wretched crap as it has been for a few years now, but you at least had a 7 game WCF's and 7 game NBA Finals. That's plenty enough to create an overall entertaining postseason.

Then one complete fluke happened because of poor foresight: Durant was able to go to a 73 win to create a video game roster. Instead of an even Thunder - GS series, you had a video game roster dominating the West. Same case with the Cavs-Warriors, who were also pretty even before the Durant. One salary cap fluke combined with a superstar who wanted the easiest ride possible changed so much.

The standard response from those who toe the Fifth Avenue spin will be that it's on the other teams to get better......as if other top teams can have a salary cap fluke fall into their lap to give them a top 2 player. Never has any one move damaged the quality of the league so much. Some people on here make it seem like it's just Pacers fans whining. Stephen A Smith was on Mike and Mike complaining about it the other day too. Say what you want about his opinions, but the guy is a huge NBA fan. Says a lot when someone like him is complaining about it.

Yes, he's devoted basically his whole reporting career to the NBA because he just hates the NBA so much.

Of course, the objective math is on his side. Two Finals teams sweeping their way to the Finals followed by a 4-1 Finals series is a complete snooze fest.

You're right, Stephen A Smith has never once actually been entertained by the NBA.

Sure, a lot of his "this player vs that player" stuff is shock jock stuff to get a reaction. This comment on Mike and Mike was just an overall comment about the league. Don't really have to dive too much into it because the lopsided playoff series math obviously proves he is 100% right. The point is that this isn't just whiney Pacers fans noticing this.

Are you mixing up Fever games and Pacer games again?

The balcony tends to be pretty good. Most of them move to the lower bowl in the second half to take over the seats of the people who leave early.

We don't sell out, tbut there have been very few games I thought the attendance was 8,000 or less, which is what it would have to be for the balcony to be empty.

NBA is doing perfectly fine. All TV viewership is down so only using regular season TV games doesn't help the narrative (though certain games DID extremely well). The money they get from ESPN/TNT is all in the bank. It's up to the networks to sell the advertising. They are very pleased with the Finals ratings in prime time this year.
Thanks for proving my point that the NBA makes more off of the 1000+ regular season games than they do off of the finals. Everything else is tangential to both my comment and the comment I was responding to.

They shot about 373728282 shots within 5 feet. Because those are the really tough ones.

Oh, and they combined for over 500 free throws.
