What do the Pacers have to do to have this season be considered a success?

I would be happy with ECF. I would be more happy with finals but we have a lot of young talent untest by the playffs (other than not getting out of the first round)

If we get to the ECF and get eliminated there, then after the season I could see myself sitting back and saying "well, that was a pretty good season."

But, at the moment, with the door wide open for the Pacers to make a run, I think that it's fair to expect the Pacers to make it to the Finals. And once they get there, they should be competitive - as competitive or better than the Pacers were in 2000 (i.e. winning at least a couple games).

I know I've been a real homer on here lately - "Sunshine Brigade" or whatever. In reality I'm nowhere near as naive as that - sometimes I guess I do it to either get a rise out of people or to counteract the occasional "doom-and-gloom" type threads whenever we have a bad game or somebody gets hurt or some EC team makes a trade etc.

However, being as objective as I possibly can be, this team is truly talented enough (and dare I say it, mature enough) to get to the finals THIS YEAR (and maybe even - *gasp* - win). In fact, I think they need to for the sake of the franchise and the fans...

I know we all have some lowered expectations lately, seeing as we've been let down so much in the recent past. But damn, this team is far and away the best in the East by anyone's standards IMO, and certainly in the top 3-4 teams in the league.

So why NOT expect us to go the Finals? You can tell that these guys feel they can get there this year, and I think so too.

We forget, as we are tearing through the regular season, that we have almost no playoff experience.

Getting out of the first round will still be a big accomplishment and that was my goal at the beginning of the season.

Of course, anything short of a championship is disappointing every season.
Why do the things that we treasure most, slip away in time
Till to the music we grow deaf, to God's beauty blind
Why do the things that connect us slowly pull us apart?
Till we fall away in our own darkness, a stranger to our own hearts
And life itself, rushing over me
Life itself, the wind in black elms,
Life itself in your heart and in your eyes, I can't make it without you

A Finals appearance and at least 2 wins. 3 if we have HCA.

Finals...frankly, we are better than everyone in the East when we play properly.
Don't ask Marvin Harrison what he did during the bye week. "Batman never told where the Bat Cave is," he explained.

It's funny. Before the season, I though:

A loss in the first round was failure
A highly competitive loss in the 2nd round would be slightly disappointing, but perhaps to be expected
An ECF appearance would be slightly suprising and a success, even if we got blown out
A finals appearance would be amazing

Now, given where we sit with our record...

Anything less than a highly competitive ECF series is a failure
A finals appearance would be a success
An NBA championship is no longer a pipe dream, but an actual possibility

    Scary how expectations change.
