Default Pacers have already clinched a playoff spot

I know it doesn't mean anything, but we're the first in the league to do so this season...

That HAS to be a good omen...

I've been hearing two things since last night:

    1) We just clinched a playoff seed

    2) We're a win away from doing so

I'm not sure which it is.

    *goes to check ESPN.com standings*

They don't say we've clinched yet, according to their up-to-date standings.

    *looks over at NBA.com*

    They don't mention it, either.

    I think we're a win away.

    It all depends on tiebreakers.

To be conservative, we're one win away.

    yahoo says we have clinched
Don't ask Marvin Harrison what he did during the bye week. "Batman never told where the Bat Cave is," he explained.

Last night's (short) ESPN game article said we had clinched, but then they updated the article today and it doesn't mention it.

    *goes to check the math*...

At this point the worst the Pacers can do is 46-36. Toronto, Cleveland and Miami are all tied for the eigth seed. The best record they can achieve is the same, 46-36. In reality this isn't possible since they play each other, but I'll go with it.

The Pacers play Toronto three more times, so in theory if they lost all their games and ended up tied, Toronto would win the tiebreaker, and have the seventh seed, the Pacers the eighth.

The Pacers have already won the season series with both Miami and Cleveland, so there is no way either of these teams can gain a higher seed.

So yes, the Pacers have been mathmatically eliminated from being eliminated. I think.

Pacers have 20 games remaining. If they lose them all, they end the season at 46-36.

Miami, Toronto and Cleveland are currently tied for the #8 seed at 26-36
(a sad statistic in and of itself)... each has 20 games remaining.

If any of these teams were to win their next 20 games, they end the season
    at 46-36.

We own the season series against Miami (2-0 so far with one game left),
We own the sason series against Cleveland (3-0 so far with one game left),

The Toronto series has yet to be decided (we've one one game with three games
    remaining).

So I guess theoretically, if the other 6 playoff teams stay in the top 8, the Pacers lose all their remaining games (incl. 3 vs. Toronto), and Toronto wins all of their remaining games, then we'd lose the tiebreaker and miss the playoffs.

Sorry guys, I guess I (and ESPN) was a bit premature. Looks like we're not making the playoffs after all ...

Er... um... wait... I think IndyToad is right... in my scenario, there would only be 7 playoff teams... if Toronto wins 20 games then that means Miami and Cleveland won't... so I guess we HAVE clinched...

The cavs, heat, raptors, celtics all have already lost 36 games, which is also the worst record the P's could have.

We don't even need to consider the tiebreaker rule in this case.

If the P's haven't clinched a playoff berth yet, then there exists a way for 3 of the above teams to end the season without any more lost.

    There are 4 combination:
1.Cavs, heat, raptor -> no way, since the cavs haven't finished the games vs the raptors right now.
2.Cavs, heat, celtics -> no way, since the heat haven't finished the games vs the celtics.
3.Cavs, raptors, celtics -> the same as 1.
4.Heat, raptors, celtics -> the same as 2.

=> It is impossible for 3 of the above 4 teams to end the season without any lost.

Therefore, we have clinched a playoff berth.

    From NBA/Pacers.com:
SALT LAKE CITY, March 5 (Ticker) -- Thanks to Jermaine O'Neal and Ron Artest, the Indiana Pacers could lose their final 20 games and still make the postseason.

O'Neal collected 30 points and 10 rebounds and fellow All-Star Artest scored eight of his 17 points in the fourth quarter as the Pacers defeated the Utah Jazz 96-88 to become the first team to clinch a playoff berth.
It is the seventh consecutive season and 14th in 15 campaigns that the Pacers (46-16) will play in the postseason. They have the longest current playoff streak of any team in the Eastern Conference.
This is from official Pacers site, so to me this means "THE TRUTH" ! So, we have qualified.
