It's google's web email service. 1GB storage per account (which I see Yahoo is moving up to now also).
There's a cool extension for Windows Explorer where you can drag and drop files to a virtual "google drive" where it mails files to your gmail account. Just set up a rule for your gmail inbox to sort mail with attachments to another folder and viola, free web storage. I'm sure there are other useful extensions for gmail as well.
