I disagree that he was applauded - an awful lot of people used it as proof Reggie would never be considered a "great" player, and many used it as reasons to discuss why we'd be better off without him (until we got to the playoffs, when everyone was behind him 100%, of course).
I think we gloss over memories of those years with rose-colored paint and forget how much criticism Reggie used to get - some of it very similar to what Paul gets.
A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.
Or throw in a first-round pick and flip it for a max-level point guard...
