Default George McGinnis, HALL OF FAMER

The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced its Class of 2017 on Saturday morning.

Zack Clayton, Nikos Galis, Mannie Jackson, Tom Jernstedt, Jerry Krause, Rebecca Lobo, George McGinnis, Tracy McGrady, Muffet McGraw and Bill Self are the 11 new members.

McGrady played for six NBA teams and averaged 19.6 points, 5.6 rebounds and 4.4 rebounds in his 15-year career. He led the league in scoring twice and was a seven-time All Star.

Lobo led the UConn Huskies to their first national championship in 1995 with a perfect 35-0 season. She won a gold medal at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta and played six seasons in the WNBA for the New York Liberty, Houston Comets and Connecticut Sun.

Bill Self has coached the Kanasas Jayhawks to 12 Big 12 Conference titles and a national championship in 2008.

Chris Webber was among the finalists but was not inducted into this year's class. He averaged 20.7 points and 9.8 rebounds in his career. Finalists needed 18 of 24 votes from the Honors Committee to be inducted.

The induction ceremonies will be held in Springfield, Massachusetts on Sept. 7-9.

What's impressive about this is that Big Mac got in via normal voting, they did away with the ABA committee.

However I am jumping on the Bill Simmons NBA hall of fame bandwagon. The NBA really needs to have its own hall of fame.

This now means that every single retired player and coach in Pacers history who has a banner in the rafters of BLF will soon now have the HOF designation on their banner. That's pretty fraking impressive.

So they decided to wait until Krause kicked the bucket to put him in the HOF.

He must've pissed someone off for this.

T-Mac not really sure I would consider him an HOFer I mean when he was healthy sure but with how his career actually played out I would say borderline.

    Congrats to McGinnis

Very deserving, he was a dominant player.

Here's a brand new highlight video from the NBA:

Tracy McGrady having Isiah Thomas present him at Hall of Fame induction

In 1997, Isiah Thomas – an all-time great player who was then running the Raptors – drafted Tracy McGrady straight out of high school with the No. 9 pick and said, “He does the things that we all wish we could do.”

Twenty years later, Thomas will present McGrady at the latter’s Hall of Fame enshrinement.

One of the coolest things the Basketball Hall of Fame does is have inductees select a current member to introduce them. It’s always fascinating to see which greats share a connection.

McGrady and Thomas didn’t spend long together in Toronto. But after Thomas resigned in November of McGrady’s rookie year, McGrady called Thomas a “father figure.” Given Thomas’ willingness to mentor younger players, their relationship likely didn’t end there.

Here’s the full list of 2017 presenters, via a Basketball Hall of Fame release:

Zack Clayton, presented by Earl Monroe (‘90)

Nick Galis, presented by Bob McAdoo (‘00)

Robert Hughes, presented by Sheryl Swoopes (‘16)

Mannie Jackson, presented by Jerry Colangelo (‘04), Lynette Woodard (‘04), Russ Granik (‘13)

Tom Jernstedt, present by John Havlicek (‘84), Ann Meyers (‘93), Geno Auriemma (‘06)

Jerry Krause, presented by Jerry Reinsdorf (‘16)

Rebecca Lobo, presented by Geno Auriemma (‘06)

George McGinnis, presented Artis Gilmore (‘11), Reggie Miller (‘12), Bobby Leonard (‘14), Spencer Haywood (‘15)

Muffet McGraw, presented by Ann Meyers (‘93)

Tracy McGrady, presented by Isiah Thomas (‘00)

Bill Self, presented by Larry Brown (‘02)

Just watching that highlight reel makes me rue the day they introduced the three point line.

Congrats to everyone that made the Hall of Fame but I'm especially proud of the fact that Nikos Galis finally made it. He really deserves a spot there. He single-handedly made Greece love basketball. The impact he had on Greek basketball will never be matched.

He was incredible, no doubt, but I had never looked at his numbers before... Kinda wish I hadn't. Oh well, I will always remember his butter game and ability to take over.

Edit: Reggie accomplished a lot more and had a far greater career, but we obviously never know what TMac could have been.

This shows you the greatness that was McGinnis. It takes FOUR people to present him!
Certainly no mere mortal in the world of basketball.

He was great in tombstone so I would say no. He also was great as Jim Morrison and let's not overlook Willow & Thunderheart. But yea after Tombstone it was a one way rocket ride to the bottom.

For some reason Larry bird did not present him on stage with the others. But if I remember the press release, I think Larry bird was listed as one of his presenters.

I was wondering why they were playing a 1973 Indiana Pacers - Utah Stars game on NBATV at 7:00 this morning. Now I know.

I missed this one and I don't think I have it in my collection. I'll have to keep an eye out for it again.
