Default Woj: Pacers assessing trade market for Paul George

The Indiana Pacers are gauging the trade market on All-Star forward Paul George, league sources told The Vertical. The Pacers are working the trade deadline on parallel fronts: Pursuing deals that will bring talent into Indiana to sell George on signing a long-term extension – and soliciting deal offers on George that would signal a rebuild around center Myles Turner, league sources told The Vertical.
Ultimately, the Pacers will have to evaluate the two paths and make a decision before Thursday’s 3 p.m. ET deadline. There’s no urgency to make a deal for George, unless the Pacers fear the Boston Celtics could ultimately provide Indiana the best possible package of assets in a deal – and think that option could disappear if Boston makes a deal with Chicago for Jimmy Butler.
For teams considering a trade for George, here’s the risk: As a free agent in the summer of 2018, he has considered re-signing with Indiana or joining his hometown Los Angeles Lakers, sources tell The Vertical.
Teams trading for George run the risk of losing the four-time All-Star to a Lakers franchise that will have the salary-cap space to sign him in 2018. The Lakers’ hiring of Magic Johnson as president of basketball operations will be an interesting twist to George’s free-agent recruitment, given that Johnson has been something of a George family icon going back to George’s childhood in nearby Palmdale, Calif.

The highlighted part is huge you just don't take that risk.

If he decides George isn't worth $200 million then he'd be stupid not to try and move him now while he's got 1 1/2 seasons on his contract. The Celtics would pay for him.

Next year if bird makes the same call he won't get half of what he'd get right now.

It would be so stupid to trade Paul. I'd rather run the risk of losing him for nothing than giving up. We won't get a better player than Paul in a trade.

I thought there was no way before seeing Woj say it. What's Boston's best possible offer?

this has way more to do with the offseason than the deadline. letting teams know to get their ducks in a row.

This sounds to me like Pacers value Turner more than PG, I bet they could get a good piece for Turner but are unwilling to do that.

Problem is right now he's worth 2 playoff runs to the Celtics. Next summer he's only worth one season. Offer likely drops.

As they should. They can lock in Turner for another 6-7 years if they want.

I also bet the new GM in Magic is probably on the phone right now, he wants a huge piece and PG is that.

True but we are looking at potential while PG is who he is right now (an star).

Or maybe Paul has told Bird something about his future plans....
"We've got to be very clear about this. We don't want our players hanging around with murderers," said Larry Bird, Pacers president.

Yeah but that's the new CBA: you can probably keep him but he's going to cost a mega premium. Bird might be looking at that $200 million price tag and gagging like the Kings did. Anything less and he might go back home to play in LA.

True specially with somebody as unhappy as Paul George.

I don't really think Paul George seems that 'unhappy'. Seems like he just wants to win and doesn't want to be tied to a team long-term that is mediocre, which the Pacers record says they are right now. There's no point in him signing a long-term contract, when he was time to see his options and all the leverage.

Also, if they offer PG the mega contract the Pacers can't offer it to Myles when he becomes a free agent, i know it's not for a long time but it would be before PG's 5 year contract is up.
"It's just unfortunate that we've been penalized so much this year and nothing has happened to the Pistons, the Palace or the city of Detroit," he said. "It's almost like it's always our fault. The league knows it. They should be ashamed of themselves to let the security be as lax as it is around here."
