Oklahoma City, Oklahoma — Jerry Drake Varnell, 23, of Sayre, Oklahoma, was arrested early Saturday morning in connection with a plot to detonate a vehicle bomb at BancFirst, 101 N. Broadway, in downtown Oklahoma City, announced Mark A. Yancey, United States Attorney for the Western District of Oklahoma.

According to a criminal complaint filed in the Western District of Oklahoma yesterday, the FBI arrested Varnell at approximately 1:00 am on August 12, 2017, after he attempted to detonate what he believed to be an explosives-laden van he had parked in an alley next to BancFirst. The complaint alleges that Varnell initially wanted to blow up the Federal Reserve Building in Washington, D.C., with a device similar to the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing because he was upset with the government.

The complaint explains that after Varnell’s intentions came to the attention of law enforcement, an undercover FBI agent posed as a person who could assist him. According to the complaint, Varnell took a series of actions to advance his plot. He identified BancFirst as the target, prepared a statement to be posted on social media after the explosion, helped assemble the device, helped load it into what he believed was a stolen van, drove the van by himself from El Reno to BancFirst in downtown Oklahoma City, and dialed a number on a cellular telephone that he believed would trigger the explosion.

Varnell is charged with attempting to use explosives to destroy a building in interstate commerce. If convicted, he would face a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison and a mandatory minimum sentence of five years’ imprisonment. He is expected to make his initial appearance in federal court in Oklahoma City today at 3:00 pm.

This arrest is the culmination of a long-term domestic terrorism investigation involving an undercover operation, during which Varnell had been monitored closely for months as the alleged bomb plot developed. The device was actually inert, and the public was not in danger. "There was never a concern that our community’s safety or security was at risk during this investigation," said Kathryn Peterson, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI in Oklahoma. "I can assure the public, without hesitation, that we had Varnell’s actions monitored every step of the way."

U.S. Attorney Yancey said: "I commend the devoted work of the FBI and our state law enforcement partners in ensuring that violent plots of this kind never succeed."

The investigation was conducted by the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force, including members from the Oklahoma City FBI; Homeland Security Investigations, part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security; the Oklahoma City Police Department; the Edmond Police Department; the Oklahoma Highway Patrol; the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs; and the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation. The FBI worked in conjunction with BancFirst during the investigation. Oklahoma District Attorney Angela Marsee, of District 2, also provided assistance. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Matt Dillon, with assistance from the Justice Department’s Counterterrorism Section.

Reference is made to court records for further information. The public is reminded that this complaint is only an allegation and that Varnell is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

We have a nazi/Russian sympathizer in the WH. Never thought I would see the day. Now the question is what does the GOP do about. Trump is destroying the country, himself, and possibly GOP in general if they sit idly by and do nothing.

I'm not sure how I feel about the removal of the statues. History must be acknowledged. If you just remove history from the public square it becomes an afterthought. This country is full of painful reminders of history. It serves as a reminder for where we have been and what progress we have made. Our educational system does such a poor job of covering history, the results are in the youth who just topple statues because their feelings are offended.

Beware populism, it is only a form of fascism. Both ends of the political spectrum are using it. The right uses it to unite around fear, fear of ever changing demographics. Fear of minorities, fear of government and losing control. The left is using it shame anyone who doesn't conform to check all the boxes of diversity and multiculturalism. Trying to force group think out of fear of being publicly called out and have your life taken way because you have offended somebody. Truly sad state in America today

The majority of the statues and flags in question were put up well after the Civil War as a giant middle finger to the DC (read: The North) that not only ultimately ended slavery but then wanted to see civil rights advanced. Something many southerners were against.

It's not about erasing history... these things are fine in museums and history books (where they belong) and nobody is trying to erase that. The problem is they are monuments to icons of the era of slavery no matter how much anyone wants to argue otherwise. And there's no place for that in 21st century America. Certainly not on government grounds as monuments as opposed to inside museums.

Yes, some people don't see it that way... only because they've been blinded to the truth by cutesy terms like "Southern Pride" and the like. And some want to hide behind those type phrases. And then there are those that claim it's about 'northern aggression', or "states' rights", thoroughly ignoring the fact that the main right the Confederate states were worried about was maintaining their right to keep slaves.

    People need to face facts.

Jesus Christ, no one is going to "forget history" because the elected representatives of a municipality decide that statues commemorating traitors should be removed from a public space. Statues are not supposed to be representative of history writ large, they are an explicit memorial to and endorsement of individuals who made a positive contribution to society. I guess we should still fly the British flag over Boston and bring back all the statues of King George III, after all if we don't do it we are forgetting history.

I saw a graphic yesterday about when those statues were made and almost all of them were build after 1900 meaning that they were build by white supremacist groups to show blacks they were still in power no matter what.

Many of them were build on the Jim Crow era as well so we are not talking about history here we are talking about tools to suppress people by showing them every single day how worthless they used to be.

Or if you really want to blow a racist's mind, inform them that Robert E. Lee didn't even want statues of himself erected in the first place:

Yep. There was also a rush to rename schools after confederates during the 50s and 60s, coincidentally following Brown v Board of Education.

    Yes.

Does this sequence of events sound familiar? Trump does/says something beyond the pale. The mainstream is outraged, with media and politicians outdoing each other to criticize Trump. Meanwhile his base circles the wagons, and takes the criticism as "proof" that the system is rigged against them.

This is straight out of Trump's playbook. And as a strategy, it was successful enough to get him elected.

So, what is different about the firestorm of outrage this time? Are there really still many people in the middle who were waiting for something like this to open their eyes? I doubt it very much. The sides are entrenched, and this event just deepens the divisions.

there's way, way more to it than that though. just having to face "oh, ****, maybe a whole buncha people really ARE racist" made her cry. and that's good! good on her for recognizing it makes her "uncomfortable." hopefully when she woke up today she asked herself why she got so emotional and wants to listen to people.

I mean, like Trumpito said, there's [queue the impression]fine people on both sides[/off]. maybe actually digest some grievances. there's cracks turning into crevices in this. or I'm just holding onto any little bit of optimism I have left.

I lean right on a lot of issues. Not all issues but a lot of issues. I cannot stand that my grandfather fought Nazis and they are being excused away by pointing at the response. Whether good or bad responses, we have to start with the racism. We cannot allow political leanings to validate racists. I will stand with those who oppose white supremacists and Nazis, even if I oppose some of their stances. Because we all should agree that racial superiority is the start of tyranny.

The statutes should have never been erected. A statue commemorates a person or an event that positively influences an organization or country.
Saddam Hussein's statue was removed. The citizens could not do it on their own so US soldiers took it down. In Kiev, the statue of Lenin was toppled in 2013.

I am fairly certain that Robert E. Lee himself would want that statue removed. In a letter to a Confederate widow, Lee wrote, “Madam, do not train up your children in hostility to the government of the United States. Remember, we are all one country now. … Bring them up to be Americans.”

The Nazis lost, the South lost, why are we commemorating them? A statue does not depict history, it symbolizes victory. There are no Adolf Hitler statues to topple, but we have too many Confederate flags and statues on government property.

    Tear them down.
