    Default Pat McAfee Retiring

Looks like Boomstick is going to route of Barry Sanders and retiring early...

I'm not going to lie, this is super depressing. My favorite Indiana sports athlete.
Don't ask Marvin Harrison what he did during the bye week. "Batman never told where the Bat Cave is," he explained.

Good Punter. Never got the hype about anything else. He's just a punter. Bill Barnwell tweeted that he might have been the 2nd best player on the Colts the last 2 seasons. Well, Bill Barnwell is dumb if we didnt already know.

Depends on how you define second best, which is a very tricky question in football.

At the very least he's in the Top 5 of current Colts players I don't get how anyone can say otherwise considering. He and Adam have always been the most consistent these past couple of years.

I admit this is definately a shocker but he does seem at peace with it. Its easy for me to say play till your leg falls off but 3 surgeries the past four years he only plays for a short time in football but he has to use his body for the rest of his life. If the pain isn't worth it I can't really blame him very few walk away on their own terms.

Good for him that he can.

Well we know we're getting a punter in the draft hope its a good one.

I think we actually have a kicker on one of the future's contracts or practice squad or something where you have a player under contract but not on your 53 man squad. Whether he's ready or the best option I don't know. I can't even guarantee you I'm correct on having someone already there stored away... but pretty sure I am...
Nuntius was right for a while. I was wrong for a while. But ultimately I was right and Frank Vogel has been let go.

He's tackled better than most of the linebackers we've had.

Pat's talents on the football field will be missed. Arguably was the best punter in the NFL

At this point we need to be upset a player retired early to be a blogger. (And I'm a Barstool Sports fan)

I doubt Grigson hated McAfee on a personal level. Probably didn't want to pay him a lot money.

Of course he didnt. He's just a punter. We can find anyone to replace him. He did his job. That's what punters are suppose to do. We were paying him for his popularity. He's not even close to being irreplaceable.

“Yeah I think you can just describe it as a hate,” McAfee said. “I mean, he did not like me at all, from day one. Our first conversation was a negotiation where he called me the lowest thing in the organization and all this stuff. He did not want to keep me around. If you remember, he got rid of all the ex-players except for Hall of Famers, really. And I think Mr. Irsay and I have had a really good relationship for a long time, I think Mr. Irsay might have told him that he had to keep me and I don’t think he enjoyed that much.

Nobody's saying he's irreplaceable, but he is (was) one of the very best punters in the league. I'll never say punters aren't valuable after watching that Colts/Chargers playoff game from like 8 years ago when I'm convinced their punter beat us.

Punters are extremely valuable. Being able to flip field position is HUGE. People just don't pay attention to it.

The main reason punters are not that valuable is that there are so many solid ones around the league. For example, the Colts finished 2nd in the league last year in net punting average. But they only averaged 4.4 more yards per punt than the median team. The Colts punted about 3.44 times per game, so that's about 15 yards in field position per game that the Colts gained.

That matters and McAfee will be missed, but there are lots of other ways to make up that sort of difference. And in the two previous years, the difference was more like 10 or 11 yards per game. And just eyeballing the number of punts inside the 20, it doesn't look like the Colts were particularly efficient in that part of punting either.

Which wasn't Pat. The coverage team was absolutely dreadful in downing punts. There was at least 5 punts during the season that resulted in touchbacks from stupid mistakes.

That punter absolutely destroyed us. Easily the best punting performance I have ever seen. He single handily won that game for them.
