    Default 2016 Olympic Games

I know there is a thread for basketball in the Pacers section, so this can be used for any other Olympic discussions, observations and such.

I thought the opening of the opening ceremony was pretty good. The light/projection show and music was fun to watch. It was a tad long, but as someone on twitter posted, it was nice to see all those countries from the internet drop down selection list.

I really enjoy checking out all the different sports that don't get attention. Women's Rugby 7? That's fun to watch.

the Hoosier Hero's calling out Justin Gatlin now. I honestly don't care either way, but she's about to take on a LOT for anybody, let alone a 19 year old.

First medal for Ireland! Silver medal in the men's doubles rowing.

Beat the USA and the Brits and all.

The rugby sevens addition was great. I didn't miss a match. I hope it expands to 16 like the world series is. Canada, Russia, Samoa, and Portugal would all be fine additions who would have performed well.

When was the last time the US didn't get a medal in women's soccer? They're in trouble right now against Sweden.

Just looked it up: apparently, never. 4 golds and a silver in 5 appearances. And right as I type this, the US ties it up.

It's a bit of a folly though. It would be like having 5 a side soccer as an Olympic sport.

Great Britain only met up 7 weeks before the Olympics and won silver. What a farce. That makes a mockery of those who won Olympic medals and worked their arses off in legitimate sports.

I am stunned by the US women's soccer team losing in the quarterfinals. Haven't beat Sweden since our old coach left to coach the Swedes. **** I hate PKs.

I don't know, isn't Britain pretty much where rugby was created? Hardly a farce for them to do well in any format. And how can you not like the Fiji story?

But then I'm still hoping for 3 on 3 basketball as an event.

Well a British athlete is now saying he got robbed at gunpoint, so I guess the lie is contagious...

It wasn't about being the team everyone loved, it was about beating the teams everyone else loved.

Hmmm... Olympics have been a little subpar for us sofar, but at the sametime not disastrous either. I always watched the Olympics wherever it was, but for some reason I just can't REALLY get myself to go wild for this one...

We'll prob. end up with something like 20 medals this time around. Good number of golds amongst them though.

For a country of 17mln we ain't doing bad, esp. compared to our larger 50-60mln European neighbours . Bit like Australia which always punches above her weight in the summer Olympics aswell.

Huge missed opportunity in women's volleyball. The U.S. has never won gold and had a great shot at doing so after Brazil was stunned in the quarterfinals. The Americans had won every match so far and the remaining three teams were all teams they beat in group play. But they lost to Serbia in five sets after being up 11-8 in the final.

I feel like, outside of swimming, gymnastics, and women's track events, the US has really underperformed at this Olympics.

It's where soccer was invented too but they've only won the world cup once.

It's great for Fiji. First ever gold. Fairplay to them.

My point is the sport format existing in the Olympics is a farce. Britain throwing together any aul' sort of a team and winning a silver (while getting dicked in the final) is the farce in contrast to how hard earned pretty much every other Olympic medal is.

I think the disappointment comes from some of the more mainstream sports.

Women's soccer failing to win a medal for the first time was the most shocking/disappointing.

Women's volleyball was ranked #1 in the world and was positioned perfectly to win its first ever gold medal after Brazil lost…completely blew it.

Men's basketball has looked very vulnerable.

No one made it to the medal rounds in men's beach volleyball, and on the women's side, we only got a bronze after Keri Walsh-Jennings lost an Olympic match for the first time ever.

Overall, it's been anything but disappointing. I just wish we could have seen better results in the sports I mentioned, and it kind of sucks knowing you have to wait 4 years to see them again.
