The more I think about it, UCLA winning the championship this year could be win-win for us. Either UCLA refuses to let Alford go because of it, or we get a coach that proves that he can win the whole thing.

Donovan sure sounded non-committal about staying in OKC when asked about the IU rumors. This could actually happen.

9 years, no Elite 8's. Not a single other sentence is necessary.

I was surprised to find out he was really here that long. It doesn't seem like it.

But I don't get why you are surprised the Harbaughs would be biased here he is their brother in law.

Yep, I'm rooting for UCLA in case we hire Alford so I can convince myself he can take a team further in the tournament than Crean.

Star's got a story with quotes from a 2018 recruit about Crean/IU and how he wasn't really in contact, yada yada. he's a good player, but he's a sub-100 recruit that none of the major state programs see as a priority. I'm not linking it specifically because it's straight up shameful for them to use a 16 year old kid for clicks like they are, the headline is specifically about what this 16 year old high school kid thinks about IU's situation.
Yeah there have been a whole lot of sub 100 kids coming out of the wood work talking about how Crean never talked to them...no offense to those kids, but no ****. The problem I have with it though is that people have been egging them on on social media and in articles like these. Even though those same fans would **** a brick if IU just filled an entire recruiting class with sub 100 Indiana kids.

Hiring an IU guy doesn't guarantee you the top kids in the state. So the whole recruiting the state thing is nice and all, but it's just silly branding. Talent is talent wherever it comes from.

It's not like Crean wasn't recruiting the top Indiana kids, they were just going elsewhere which may happen under any coach. It's more important to build an identity and a type of player you want to recruit around.

Yeah, had he won consistently, I don't really think many people would have truly cared about his recruiting of Indiana. When he isn't winning, it becomes an issue. He wasn't, so it was.

True, but Alford is already recruiting the state pretty damn well.

If it isn't Donovan though, Gregg Marshall is probably our best bet. I know he has questions about his attitude, but the guy is a flat out great coach. If he can recruit at a high level here he'd be the real deal because he won't be out coached very often. I'd also be okay with Archie Miller but I like Marshall more.

Id probably rank my candidates like this:

    1. Donovan
    2. Marshall
    3. Miller
    4. Alford

I agree. Coaches and teams shouldn't be judged on the selection of a handful of high schoolers. If Wilkes and Jaren Jackson chose IU, it still wouldn't change the coaching job that Crean has done and whether he deserves to keep the job or not. It shouldn't come down to a couple of kids

Speaking of Donovan, OKC is now #5 in the west. That is stunning to me.

Which came first, the chicken or the egg? If Indiana still had the success and mystique it used to have, all the top Indiana prospects would be lining up to sign up to the program. As soon as a coach brings success and mystique back to the program all else will follow. Hate to say it, but a big name coach would be huge. Hiring of Donovan would be a home run. Even Alford would be a bigger deal than we have seen since Knight was fired.

the basketball coach is the face of a lot of schools, but especially IU. Steve Alford is a rape apologist and denier in the face of abundant evidence. I have a niece at IU right now, I have daughters of close friends that may go to IU down the road. any of you with Alford on your list need to look up his repeated defenses of Pierre Pierce and ask yourself if you'd be comfortable sending any woman to a school whose administration thinks it's an acceptable position. unless you agree with Knight that if it's inevitable she should just lay back and enjoy it.

I'm watching Wichita State-UK closely, if Marshall wins that I don't see how you can't at least take a hard look at him.

Also, over on the forums the Donovan to IU stuff is heating up even more. Basically someone over at Peegs supposedly said that Donovan has signed already, while the 247 guys are saying they haven't heard that but that he's extremely close.

I actually found it. The problem is they seem to put everything into one giant thread for this coaching search.

I'd like Gregg Marshall more if he wore contacts.
