Default Iverson hit with coin by Detroit fan

In the local paper this morning (Elkhart Truth) there is a brief line about Alan Iverson getting hit by a coin while he sat on the bench last night at the Palace. The "fan" was reportedly escorted out. Anybody see this happen? Did the commentators make a big deal out of this or was it not mentioned at all? This is the first I've heard of this "incident."

Fan arrested after Iverson hit by coin at Pistons game

    April 27, 2005

    CBS SportsLine.com wire reports

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -- A fan was arrested Tuesday night after the Philadelphia 76ers' Allen Iverson was struck with a coin at The Palace of Auburn Hills.

The incident did not escalate into a confrontation on the scale of the Nov. 19 Palace brawl involving Detroit Pistons fans and Indiana Pacers players.

Iverson was hit while sitting on the bench with about two minutes left in the 76ers' first-round playoff game against the Pistons, Auburn Hills police Sgt. Rick Leonard said in a written statement. Other fans pointed out the suspect to police and Palace security.

The man, identified only as a 31-year-old Taylor, Mich., resident, was released pending a review of the incident by Oakland County prosecutors, Leonard said.

Iverson scored 19 points in the 99-84 Detroit victory that gave the Pistons a 2-0 lead in the best-of-7 series.

In the Nov. 19 brawl, Indiana's Ron Artest rushed into the stands and began striking a man he thought had thrown a drink on him. Some of his teammates joined him in the stands and also clashed with fans on the court.

Five Pacers players and four Pistons fans are charged with misdemeanor assault and battery. Fans William Paulson and John Ackerman are to go on trial July 11.

John Green, the fan who prosecutors say sparked the brawl by lobbing the drink at Artest, is to be tried along with David Wallace, brother of Pistons center Ben Wallace, on July 15.

The Pacers players are to be tried separately, starting with Artest on Aug. 1 and followed by Anthony Johnson, David Harrison, Jermaine O'Neal and Stephen Jackson in that order.

A fan charged with throwing a chair pleaded no contest last month and awaits sentencing. Three other fans were sentenced to probation for walking onto the court or throwing objects.

NBA commissioner David Stern suspended Artest for the season, and handed lengthy suspensions to O'Neal and Jackson.

Clearly the Detroit fans have not learned their lesson. Why is there no zero tolerance policy for them.

Good job Stern you really showed those drunken idiots that it is ok to throw things at people.

Pistons fans have a history of this. Artest was pelted two playoffs ago by Pistons fans, a factor that was seldom mentioned in the aftermath of the Malice in the Palace incident.

Why does the media insist on mis-reporting what happened that night. Ron did not rush into the stands and start striking a man he thought had thrown a drink on him. He grabbed him.

Why won't they just report what really happened ??

Grabbing, pusshing, throwing someone down all equal striking stop nitpicking.

The guy when arrested asked what is going to happen, the police responded that he would be ticketed and arrested.

The guys response, "It was the other dude!"

    [Sarcasm]

Good thing the Detroit fans learned their lesson from the harsh penalties they suffered from the Brawl.

Come on everybody, we all know that if Allen Iverson hadn't been sitting there, then he wouldn't have had the money thrown at him! I surprised that Iverson wasn't thrown out for obstructing the path of the coin.

Now along with being a Pacers fan, I am also a Piston fan but this crap is crazy, I mean this crap has happened before and after Artest.I remember reading on here that Artest would have gotten the boot even if he didn't hit that fan, and that is the honest truth.

Another question, why didn't the Piston's ever get anything for this, Reggie has said it publicly and I wonder too, and does Ron Deserve an apology from them?

What is up with their aim?!!?!

Pistons fans have the best aim in all of the NBA, perhaps all of sports.

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -- According to witnesses the man arrested was in reality a fan of the Indiana Pacers and said he would "Make the Pistons pay for 11/19!" Another witness said he overheard the fan yell "Free Artest!" as he was led out by police.

NBA Commissioner David Stern, in a hastily put together press conference, had this to say about what happened, "After viewing the videotape on ESPN and hearing from an anonymous source about the comments made by witnesses, I have decided to prohibit the Indiana Pacers from playing any home games for the duration of the playoffs. Furthermore, any more fan related incidents at any NBA arena will result in further punshment to the Pacers' franchise in the form of player suspensions, severe fines, loss of future draft choices and a drastically reduced salary cap. Although these actions may seem severe, they are necessary to maintain the integrity and postive image of the league." He went on to say that he will "look deeper into the incident at some point in the future that is convenient to me." He also cast doubt on the possibilty that the punishments would be overturned, "The vote is 1-0." a smilng Stern said.

When asked about security at The Palace he stated "They acted accordingly. I don't see, nor have I have ever seen or heard of any problems with the security at The Palace. It's a great place to take the family to watch our wonderful players play this game we all love."

I was thinking the same thing.

Maybe he's the bizarro Sassan, who lives in Boston and is a Piston fan.

Although the bizarro Sassan probably wouldn't have thrown anything.

If I came up to you and was striking you in the mouth with my fist or I grabbed you by the arm, I would presume you would not see any difference and could only refer to it as nitpicking.

You're right, perhaps the Tigers management should consider plugging some of these Pistons fans into the their pitching rotation.

Seems to me they have learned their lesson. Clearly you missed this part in the article:

hmm, one guy threw a coin, everyone in the crowd pointed him out, he got arested.

    Clearly, we haven't learned anything.

I'd also like to point out that this guy was the first guy ever to throw a coin at somebody. Its certainly NEVER happened anywhere else......

lastly, no self-respecting piston fan would EVER come into an arena wearing a BOSTON hat.......

No, in that case, anytime you ever hear of anybody throwing a coin, anywhere it should be front-page news like this, since coin-throwing is such a hot topic.

Not that anyone here would really care if this happened in dallas.....

besides, from what I hear from Iverson, he's had MUCH worse experiences in Indiana.....wait, he was obviously lying. lets quickly stop talking about that.

You know, I think when I go to the next Pacers-Pistons game, I think I'll throw an elephant onto Rasheed. Cause you know, that has never been done before, so it must be ok
Don't ask Marvin Harrison what he did during the bye week. "Batman never told where the Bat Cave is," he explained.

Even though this time the fellow fans prevented this from mushrooming out-of-control, I think the NBA should still slap the Pistons with a one-game alcholol sales ban.

And if we advance to the second round, I wish CFH would voluntarily not sell alcohol to anyone at a Pacers/ Pistons game.

How many more incidents like this until the Palace loses its liquor license?
