    Default 2016 Indiana Fever Thread

Lots of Fever moves this week so I thought I'd go ahead and start a thread.

    1) Shavonte Zellous left as a free agent. She's with NY now.
From what the Fever said, it sounds like she just wasn't a priority with the limited $ available under the cap.
    http://fever.wnba.com/news/free-agen...w-york-libery/

    2) Fever re-sign Shenise Johnson and Lynetta Kizer.
Multi-year deals for each of them. Good signings.
    http://fever.wnba.com/news/johnson-a...indiana-fever/

3)Fever trade Natasha Howard for Devereaux Peters.
I suspect this is the big move of the offseason. Peters probably got the money we saved by letting Zellous walk. She was buried on the Lynx bench so they probably couldn't afford to match what we offered her. And she's a defensive ace which fits into our style of play.
    http://fever.wnba.com/news/free-agen...ign-and-trade/

Letting Zellous walk opens a roster spot for our #1 pick. It also puts pressure on Lucas and Pohlen to step up their games.

I'd guess the depth chart looks like this:

    PG: January/Clarendon
    SG: Johnson/Pohlen/Lucas
    SF: Catchings/Coleman
    PF: Peters/Kizer
    C: Larkins/Achonwa

Catchings probably bounces between SF and PF with plenty of nights off. The roster has a lot of positional flexibility.

At least the Fever's colors now more closely resemble the Pacers.

    It's draft day!!!

    Fever take:

Round 1: Tiffany Mitchell 5-9 SG South Carolina
Round 2: Brene Moseley 5-8 PG Maryland
Round 3: Julie Allamand 19 year old Belgian PG
    http://fever.wnba.com/news/fever-sel...ck-wnba-draft/

Tiffany Mitchell should be a more than adequate replacement for Zellous at backup shooting guard.
Can Moseley challenge Clarendon for the backup point guard slot? Unlikely, she was 6th man for Maryland.
Allamand will stay in Europe to continue developing.

I'd guess the depth chart looks something like this:

    PG: January/Clarendon/Moseley/Wheeler
    SG: Johnson/Mitchell/Pohlen/Lucas
    SF: Coleman/Goree/Taylor
    PF: Catchings/Peters/Kizer
    C: Larkins/Achonwa

I could see either Cyesha Goree or Asia Taylor making the team (both signed as free agents to training camp contracts).

I admit I follow women's NCAA hoops even less than men's, so I'm not sure if you mean "in future" or "now". If "now" - wow.

You think I'm over hyping her with a description of "more than adequate" as a "backup shooting guard". - wow.

It's the comparison to Zellous, who I have always thought of as more than just a "backup shooting guard".

Just to clarify for others reading this thread, I never compared Tiffany Mitchell to Zellous in any way. Zellous only started 1 game last year and is no longer with the team so someone else will be the backup shooting guard this season. That was my intent by using the phrase "replacement for Zellous". And no, the phrase "more than adequate replacement" does not mean that Mitchell will ever be better than Zellous. That's not what it means to me anyway. Next time your spouse cooks dinner, compliment them by saying it was "more than adequate" and see how they take it. Apparently BillS considers it high praise.

In this linked video Kelly Krauskopf discusses Tiffany Mitchell picking up at least some of Zellous' minutes. I guess we'll find out in a few weeks if it's Mitchell or someone else.

Don't know where this got all defensive. I really liked Zellous and felt that "replacement" indicated a very positive comparison for a rookie coming in to have that kind of impact right away. I was glad to hear the evaluation. It sounds like you mean more that Mitchell will fill Zellous' role more than adequately, which is fine.

In all honesty, I followed the Fever much less last year than I have in the past (we no longer have season tickets), so if Z dropped off I would not have really processed it and would still have been thinking of her in previous years.

What does it say about the state of the WNBA when a 2nd year head coach who just got off a trip to the finals can be stolen by a college program?

Herb Simon's lost both his head coaches in the span of a month or so because he, maybe, didn't want to pay them enough

WNBA salaries are much more regulated than NBA salaries. There's definitely a cap on the players, I can imagine there is one on the coaches.

And, really, the Vandy women's program probably makes more money than the entire WNBA combined.

I very, very much doubt Vandy lady hoops turns any sort of profit, I doubt their mens program makes a profit, hell I doubt ANY Vandy sport makes money, maybe baseball at a small 6 figure level in a good year. aside from UConn, and even they probably operate in the red, I don't think a single NCAA womens program makes money. I'm not trying to denigrate womens basketball or anything, it's just the reality of the situation, the VAST majority of NCAA sports are net losers on a per program basis. there were like 6 D1 athletic departments that just broke even last year, out of 330 or whatever it is.

that's what happens when the highest paid public employee of like 48 states is either the head football or basketball coach at the biggest public university in the state.

So Tamika tonight passed Lisa Leslie as the WNBA's All Time Leading Rebounder.... has anyone else realized just how LOADED the 2021 Basketball and Football Hall of Fame classes will be between Manning, Bryant, Duncan and Tamika by themselves?

The Fever need to go ahead leave Indianapolis. I'll never support them after tonight. I cant support ignorance. I've erased a long thread i was about to make basically because i know it will get deleted. But Protesting during the National Anthem is just a sign of selfishness and uninformed ignorance. And the sad thing is that I see these young kids properly standing for the anthem behind these idiots. The irony in the whole matter is that you cant find many countries who even have one female sports league let along a female pro basketball league.

But ya. Protest right? Idiots. The Fever are a disgrace. Move to another city please.

Hate to see it end like this for Catchings. This stupid protesting fad is going to draw all the attention away from what an incredible career she had.

You may get your wish about the Fever leaving Indianapolis. It almost happened in the late 2000's, and the team was a legit contender then. I fully expect this team to land in the lottery for at least the next two seasons, and when the team stops winning, the fans will stop coming. It's the way Indy works.

It's also a shame the Fever had to play the Mercury. Phoenix hasn't been good this season, but they've got Diana Taurasi and Britney Griner. That two headed beast is too dangerous for a team that earned the fifth playoff seed. Put them against Seattle and they might be playing next round.

Catchings is a wonderful player and person, IMO the best defensive player ever in the women's game. She's done a lot for Indiana and women's basketball. Women's basketball and the athletic world in general will miss her.
