    Indiana Pacers News Release
    Indianapolis, March 2, 2004
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Artest
The Indiana Pacers announced Tuesday that they have activated All-Star forward Ron Artest and placed James Jones on the injured list with a contusion to his left quadricep.
Artest underwent surgery Feb. 19 for a ligament tear in his left thumb. After examination Monday in New York City, he was cleared by Dr. Michelle Carlson to play. Artest will start Tuesday night when the Pacers play at Golden State and will wear protective padding around the thumb.

Artest sprained the thumb Jan. 17 in a victory at New Jersey when it got caught in Richard Jeffersonís jersey. He re-aggravated the injury Feb. 17 during the Pacersí game with New Orleans.

I truelly wish him luck...but this seems like a bad decision to me.

But he's at least 30 years younger and in a whole lot better shape than me...so we'll see.

    HOLY ****!!!!!!!!!!!

Not sure if it's a good or bad decision, but he has to be one of the toughest players I've ever seen.
"It's just unfortunate that we've been penalized so much this year and nothing has happened to the Pistons, the Palace or the city of Detroit," he said. "It's almost like it's always our fault. The league knows it. They should be ashamed of themselves to let the security be as lax as it is around here."

    HOLY ****!!!!!!!!!!!
    Pretty much sums it up.

I have to believe that Bird, Carlisle and DW would not let him play unless he was truly ready. He is our only shot at getting to the finals this year.

What a bad break that James Jones just happened to get injured.

Man I hope Ron is careful.

Man I hope Ron is careful.
Two things - (1) if Ron is "careful" then Ron won't be playing with his typical reckless abandon. I'm not sure that Ron playing "tame" and with one thumb mostly immobolized is better for the Pacers than what we've been doing for the past five games.

    (2) if he gets hurt again it will be an accident that cannot be prevented by being careful (like getting his thumb caught in a jersey or falling on it - which are the last two causes of Ron's thumb injuries.)

I may be too nervous to watch this week when Ron's in the game.

In the long run I tend to think coming back so soon fall on the "not a very good idea" end of the scale. I suppose the doctors know more than we do though. I just hope he doesn't hurt himself worse when by all accounts he should still be recuperating.

    Pacers' Artest returns to lineup
    By Mark Montieth

SAN FRANCISCO -- Indiana Pacers forward Ron Artest will play tonight at Golden State, making a surprisingly early return from hand surgery.

Artest, who suffered a torn ligament in his left thumb, had surgery on Feb. 19. According to team officials, he was likely to miss most of the remaining regular season games.

Artest ranks second on the Pacers in scoring (18.0) and assists (3.9) and is the team's best defender. He played in the NBA All-Star game for the first time on Feb. 15.

He will wear a padded protective device on his thumb.

"It's an unusual situation, but Ron's an unusual player," Pacers coach Rick Carlisle said today. "He had a similar procedure in college (at St. John's) with the same doctor and with her approval was able to play after a similar layoff."

Artest will return to the starting lineup immediately. Al Harrington, who had started the last five games in Artest's place, will go back to a leading reserve role.

Harrington is coming off one of his best games of the season -- 21 points and nine rebounds in Sunday's victory over Philadelphia.

"He's fine with it," Carlisle said of Harrington's return to the bench.

James Jones was placed on the injured list to make room for Artest.

    I'm just amazed at this.

I hope it all works out, but I'm a bit worried.

Holy ****ing ****. I can't believe this. I guess JO wasn't kidding, eh?

But seriously, I think he is going to be just fine. Artest knows his body better than anyone else, and I am sure the Docs were fine with it. Plus, as mentioned, Donnie, larry, and Rick are not going to do anything to jeopardize the season.

We are going to kick some major butt!!!!

I for one am not worried.

Ron Artest is coming back right when he feels he is ready, so I put all of my trust in him.

The bad thing is for the fans is that few will get to watch him play tonight.

    Sincerely,

I dunno that you can go by 'the player knows his body better than anybody else'. I believe Jerry Rice tried playing too soon after an injury and paid for it.

Then again, I guess a knee and a thumb are two different things. Hopefully the Dr isn't succumbing to pressure and clearing Artest.

BTW... Will Ron start being the media's Steve McNair of the NBA?

    Good luck Ron!

I won't pretend to know if this is a good idea or not... all I can say is that Ron Artest is one

Well that's what concerns me: his surgery was performed by St. John's surgeon, and obviously she's cleared him. I'm so nervous about this that I actually did a Google search on her. She seems to have some experience with performing this surgery for basketball players (I can find references to her on two surgeries for St. John's players including Ron's previous surgery.)

I guess we can conclude that the Pacers' team physician concers?

If he hurts it again, we'll be talking about whether he's going to miss training camp, forget about the playoffs.

Not sure if this is good news or not.. pretty suprising. Should at least have waited till after this road trip. Whatever though, good to have him back on the floor anyway.

I doubt the Pacers would clear him to play on anyone's advice other than the specialist..... his surgeon.

Vince Carter - Feb. 18: predicted out 2-3 weeks. current status: day-to-day
Ron Artest - Feb. 19: predicted out 6-8 weeks. current status: active!

I know the nature of their injuries are different but it's still pretty darn funny...

    This is goofy.

Why? The Pacers are still 6-1/2 games ahead of NJ in the EC & 7 up on Detroit - pretty much where they were when Ron went out.

Is the reason so Indy can have HC in the finals? Because that's the only advantage I can see. I hope it works out but if it doesn't and Ron ends up missing the playoffs then you'll get bounced in the 2nd rd.

It ain't worth it IMO - let him sit the next 3 weeks or so and get back with 5 games left in the season to get back in the flow of things. Unless the Doc is saying the chance of him injuring it isn't significantly higher than if he was 100% - and I have a hard time believing that.

Guess we'll see how it all works out.

I heard this on the radio about an hour ago and just got home.

I pretty much immediately went I was blown away he's playing TONIGHT. Still am.

Just hope he knows what he's doing.

Good to have him back so soon though.
