    Default Vecsey's Tuesday Ramblings...

    NOT FITTING IN:

March 2, 2004 -- IF Gary Payton is so concerned about getting more minutes (and touches), he might want to reassess the value of being expelled from games; Little Noxious, it deserves highlighting, leads the league with four ejections.

What ever happened to Payton's self-righteous chant upon joining the Lakers about the ring being the only thing that matters? Salary, shots and status are irrelevant, he said, preaching, "I'm all about winning."

Fact is, Payton's so not about sacrifice Mel Gibson announced he'd never do a movie about his life.

Who would've thought, yet another Glove in L.A. that doesn't fit?

As the NBA gears itself to welcome back Chris Webber tonight, his high school eligibility is being questioned because of that "pesky" portfolio he put together courtesy of the dearly departed "Con Ed" Martin.

By my count, that gives C-Note the rarest of triple crowns: ineligibility in high school, college and the pros.

Sad to report, the witch-hunt continues. Investigators claim Webber also soiled the records of his pre-school teams. Evidently they've unearthed proof he took illegal booster shots.

Several hours before the All-Star Game, Pat Riley, seemingly auditioning for the Lakers' coaching job next season, spoke for 40 minutes at the Legend's Brunch. Now I understand why he's so highly paid on the lecture circuit. Riley gets 25G to speak and another 25G to stop speaking.

Being an Atlanta Hawks fan this season, offers column conscience John Milich, "is like jumping on the Dennis Kucinich bandwagon."

I suspect it's almost safe to say LeBron James has validated Cavalier president Jim Paxson's decision to draft him instead of Darko Milicic.

Jerry West was unswerving in his unwillingness to part with Shane Battier in any deal for Erick Dampier, but that wasn't the only prohibitive factor. Aside from owning a two-year escape clause come July 1 (he's currently on the books at $7.557 million), the Warriors' center has accumulated an extra $3.5M in bonuses (rebounds and blocks) that the Grizzlies would've had to pay.

Isiah Thomas says he had no problem giving up Alfonso Soriano for Alex Rodriguez even though he wasn't one of Scott Layden's players.

How bad did the Nets get mauled in Minnesota and home-wrecked by the Lakers? Kobe breezed through Jersey without broadcasting he'd consider signing with them this summer. Rod Thorn has filed the appropriate grievance.

What do you mean, you can't understand how the Timberwolves could lose to the Allen Iverson-less 76ers? Some wise guy told 'em it was the first round of the playoffs.

What a surprise to read Iverson disregarded team rules (again) to contact Chris Ford directly when he called in sick for Sunday's 81-74 win. Then again, if A.I. bucked with Larry Brown on his back, why should we think he'd conform with a substitute teacher riding him?

The Knicks' stock has dropped so much of late that Martha Stewart denied selling it.

Evidently, Scott Layden could've pulled off the Stephon Marbury trade before Isiah was hired, but he insisted Jerry Colangelo's PhoKnicks Sons return the rights to Dick Van Arsdale from the '67 expansion draft.

I'm not saying the Nets' bench is shallow after Aaron Williams, but B-Rod Thorn is thinking about protecting Eddie Griffin's attorney in the June expansion draft.

It's official: The Knicks have become such tragic figures the refs are handwriting Dikembe Mutombo's number on their inside-out shirts.
Why do the things that we treasure most, slip away in time
Till to the music we grow deaf, to God's beauty blind
Why do the things that connect us slowly pull us apart?
Till we fall away in our own darkness, a stranger to our own hearts
And life itself, rushing over me
Life itself, the wind in black elms,
Life itself in your heart and in your eyes, I can't make it without you

Substitute Pacers in that last sentence and I can see why we were never seriously in the Dampier chase.

That bonus money has to count against the cap, doesn't it?

Does that mean Dampier's actual salary for trade purposes had to be calculated at nearly 11 mil?

Because he had already "hit" the targets to earn those bonuses this season, I think the answer to both questions is yes.

But I'm not 100% sure how this is handled in the offseason or during the season before the targets are achieved?

So how come IT's buddy Vecsey isn't taking a few shots at Isiah?

It seems as though that last trade Isiah made may have been one trade too many. I see him taking a lot of pot shots at the Knicks, but nothing of how they got into the situation they are in......

    What a *** wipe.

I wish just one of the people like Uncle Buck or Kstat or one of the many other excellent writers we have here at PD could take Vecsey's place

Vescey was on NBATV for two hours tonight like he is every Tuesday night.

he said the Pacers probably would have traded AL for Dampier before the trade deadline, but didn't when Artest got injured. Vescey said look for the possiblity of a sign and trade this summer involving Damp and AL .

Damp + XXX for Al and Pollard?

XXX = Draft Pick? All I can think of. Doubt Dunleavy's stock will drop that far. Maybe we could bundle Cro instead of Pollard?
Welcome to Pacers Digest! New around here? Here are three tips for making the forum a great place to talk about Pacers basketball.

    • Log in. Even if you want to read instead of post, it's helpful because it lets you:
    • Change your signature options. You can hide all signatures by choosing "Settings" (top right) then "General Settings" (middle left) and unchecking the box "Show Signatures" (in the "Thread Display Options" area).
    • Create an ignore list. I know it may seem unneighborly. But you're here to talk about the Pacers, not argue with someone who's just looking for an argument. Most of the regular users on here make use (at least occasionally) of the "Ignore" feature. Just go to "Settings" -> "Edit Ignore List" and add the names.

    Enjoy your time at PD!

You sure Larry and DW like XXX stuff?
"It's just unfortunate that we've been penalized so much this year and nothing has happened to the Pistons, the Palace or the city of Detroit," he said. "It's almost like it's always our fault. The league knows it. They should be ashamed of themselves to let the security be as lax as it is around here."
