Report: Pierre-Paul has right index finger amputated

In the four days since Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul suffered injuries in a fireworks accident, information about his condition has been vague and sketchy. On Wednesday night, ESPN provided a large dose of clarity.

Adam Schefter reports that Pierre-Paul had his right index finger amputated today. ESPN actually obtained — and Schefter actually posted — the medical document confirming the removal of the finger. (As if no one would have taken his word for it.)

Schefter also reports that a “medical source” expects Pierre-Paul to play this season, “sooner than you think.”

If Pierre-Paul wasn’t on board with the release of his medical documents, Schefter and/or others may have to eventually consult with some “legal sources.”

Hopefully those “legal sources” will end up being better than any of the other sources who told multiple reporters that Pierre-Paul was not in danger of losing any fingers.

Don't ask Marvin Harrison what he did during the bye week. "Batman never told where the Bat Cave is," he explained.

I don't think Schefter will get into trouble he was reporting information now while unethical he was within his job requirements. The medical worker who gave him that info?

    They're done.

And a cornerback lost 2 fingers!

Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback C.J. Wilson lost two fingers while setting off fireworks during a Fourth of July celebration over the weekend, his father said Wednesday.

That pretty much sums up Schefter for doing that.

Gray area. The law has to do with the release of private information of another person, typically by a medical facility, without a signed release of the person the information was about. Although ESPN was obviously not the medical facility that inadvertently or otherwise released the information, they PERPETUATED the release of the information, and probably did it without their own signed release from the player.

I didn't see the broadcast, but a better way of reporting it would have been to report it as a rumor without any photos. By including a photo, they better have something to back it up and get them off the hook.

Schefter shouldn't have touched the medical records. He is credible enough to report what happened without sharing them.

Jason Pierre-Paul sues ESPN, Adam Schefter

Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul already has reached a settlement with the hospital that leaked his medical records to Adam Schefter of ESPN. Pierre-Paul is now suing Schefter and ESPN, a development that really isn’t all that surprising.

Julia Marsh of the New York Post reports that Pierre-Paul has sued the network and its NFL insider in Florida for improperly obtaining Pierre-Paul’s chart regarding surgery to remove his index finger and posting the information to Schefter’s millions of Twitter followers. ESPN thereafter televised the image of the medical record.

“This action arises out of ESPN reporter Schefter’s blatant disregard for the private and confidential nature of plaintiff’s medical records, all so Schefter could show the world that he had ‘supporting proof’ of a surgical procedure,” the lawsuit states, via Marsh.

ESPN and Schefter declined comment to the Post, through a spokesperson.

In a July interview with SI.com, Schefter admitted that he “could and should have done more” before posting the image of the medical record. But it was clear in the same interview that Schefter didn’t see the problem with publishing a photo of Pierre-Paul’s chart.

“It didn’t look to me as if there was anything else in there that could be considered sensitive,” Schefter said at the time. “NFL reporters report on all kinds of medical information on a daily basis. That’s part of the job. The only difference here was that there was a photo.”

That doesn’t mean the photo needed to be shared with the world.

“[I]n a day and age in which pictures and videos tell stories and confirm facts, in which sources and their motives are routinely questioned, and in which reporters strive to be as accurate as possible, this was the ultimate supporting proof,” Schefter said at the time. (Actually, the ultimate proof was on Pierre-Paul’s hand.)

The photo of the record also contained information regarding another patient, and it came at a time when multiple reporters were reporting that Pierre-Paul’s index finger had been amputated. No one was denying it, everyone was reporting it, and sharing the image of the photo was unnecessary.

ESPN settles with Jason Pierre-Paul, defends Adam Schefter’s report

Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul has settled his lawsuit with ESPN, a settlement that does not require the network or Adam Schefter to apologize for their report.

In fact, ESPN issued a statement saying it stands by Schefter’s decision to tweet an image of Pierre-Paul’s medical chart, which got two hospital employees fired for violating Pierre-Paul’s privacy.

“ESPN continues to firmly believe that its reporting about Mr. Pierre-Paul’s July 2015 injury, including the use of a medical chart that definitively described the seriousness of the injury and resulting treatment, was both newsworthy and journalistically appropriate,” ESPN said in a statement today. “Despite their different points of view, the parties have agreed to amicably resolve their dispute rather than continue their litigation.”

Pierre-Paul lost part of his hand in a Fourth of July fireworks accident in 2015. Schefter used the leaked medical chart in his reporting on the seriousness of Pierre-Paul’s injury, which forced him to miss much of the 2015 season and cost him millions of dollars in salary. Presumably ESPN wrote Pierre-Paul a check to settle his suit, but financial terms of the settlement were not released.

Got to love the shadiness of ESPN. I am sure Schefter and ESPN see him as clean because he is not the one who violated Paul's privacy. It was those two medical professionals that violated his privacy.

To me Schefter should have been fired over that and ESPN should apologize for it. It is one thing to get information from the team concerning a bruised shoulder, but to get leaks from a hospital is such a violation of his privacy.
