I didn't see a thread for this anywhere so I figured I'd start my own. As some of you may know the U19 FIBA World Championship (hosted in Heraklion, Crete) started in June 27th. The Semi-finals are about to take place in 10 hours. USA is facing Greece in the 1st Semis and Croatia is facing Turkey in the 2nd Semis.
USA, Greece and Turkey are currently undefeated while Croatia has only lost 1 game in the group phase (against USA). Canada was the 4th undefeated team but they were knocked out by Croatia yesterday (84-71). USA got to the Semis by beating Argentina in the Round of 16 (93-45) and Italy in the Quarters (86-65). Greece got to the Semis by beating Tunisia in the Round of 16 (100-48) and Spain in the Quarters (70-59). Turkey got to the Semis by beating Iran in the Round of 16 (73-63) and Australia in the Quarters (81-70).
Obviously, one of the main reasons I'm making this thread is because my NT is going to face your NT. So, I'm hoping that we can have some conversation during the game
So, allow me to post the rosters of the two teams.
Here's USA's roster -> http://www.fiba.com/world/u19/2015/USA#|tab=roster
I'll freely admit that I don't know anyone. Some of them have apparently already enrolled in big colleges (Justin Bibbs to Virginia Tech, LJ Peak to Georgetown, Chinanu Onuaku to Louisville {is he Arinze's brother} and Thomas Welsh to UCLA) while Allonzo Trier plays for Findlay Prep. You have beat everyone on the tournament so far by at least 20 points (last night's 86-65 was your smallest margin of victory).
Here's Greece's roster -> http://www.fiba.com/world/u19/2015/Greece#tab=roster
Our smallest margin of victory was 5 against the Dominican Republic (70-65). Our game against Serbia and Spain were kinda close as well (69-60 and 70-59 respectively). No team has scored more than 65 points against us so far. On the other hand, you have never scored less than 83 points.
Our roster has some interesting players. You may have even heard about a couple of them.
Tyler Dorsey was born in California to Jerrid Dorsey and Samia Dorsey (neƩ Constantinides). He played for Maranatha High School in Pasadena and has committed to play for the Oregon Ducks. He is a 6'5 SG with good athleticism and a sweet stroke. He is averaging 13.8 PPG, 4.8 RPG and 1.8 APG in the tournament so far and he is shooting 47.1% from 3 point range.
Georgios Papagiannis was born in Maroussi, Athens but he attended high school in the US (well, the first two years of it). He played for Westtown School in West Chester, Pennsylvania. He was a 4-star recruit but he chose to return to Greece and play for Panathinaikos instead of committing to an NCAA team. It's important to note that Papagiannis played professional basketball in Greece before committing to Westtown School. Yes, he made his debut in Greece's top tier league (the Greek Basket League) at the age of 14. He's a 7'1 C (some people are saying that he's closer to 7'2 now) that can post-up, rebound and block shots. He's averaging 8.6 PPG, 9 RPG and 3.2 BPG in the tournament so far.
Konstantinos Mitoglou plays for Wake Forest. He is a 6'11 PF with good athleticism and potential as a stretch 4 (he shot 38.5% from 3 in Wake Forest but he is struggling in the tournament so far). He is averaging 10.4 PPG, 7.6 PPG and 1.6 in the tournament so far and he averaged 9.7 PPG and 4.6 RPG for the Demon Deacons in 14-15.
Georgios Tsalmpouris playes for Iowa State. He is not a key cog of our team so far (he did have a very good game against Korea, though, with 12 points, 5 assists and 4 rebounds) and he wasn't a key cog for Iowa State either (averaged 4.4 PPG as a Freshman) but he's still a 7'1 Center and if we have any fans of Iowa State in this forum then they have probably heard of him.
So, I told you some things about our players. Do you have any info to share about yours? Are we going to see any of those kids enter the draft in the next few years? Discuss
