First up, we'll do our magic number for the 8 seed. Once we secure that, we can start worrying about 7, 6, and so on. We're currently 38-34. We're far enough out that I don't want to mess with tiebreakers, so for now this thread will assume that we have to win outright instead of tie.
Let's say we're fighting Philly, Orlando, and New Jersey for the last playoff spot.
Jersey has a record of 35-39. That means the best they could do is 43-39. Thus, our magic number to pass New Jersey is 6. Six Pacer wins or Jersey losses puts us on top of the Nets. Of course, that won't get us into the playoffs.
Next up is Orlando. They're 35-38, half a game up from NJ. If they won the remainder of their games, they could come in at 44-38. Thus, our magic number for the Magic is 7.
Philly's a full game ahead of Orlando. They're at 36-37. That's 73 games, so they have 9 left. If they win all nine, they'll end at 45-37. That means we'd have to get to 46 wins to pass Philly. Thus, our magic number is 8.
So, here we are. Magic numbers are:
That looks pretty feasible to me.
