NOTE: Stern couldn't make chat. This is Marc Stein's answer:

Q: Will Ron Artest be reinstated for the playoffs?

A: This is by far the question we received the most. Pacers People are desperate to see their quirky stopper reinstated, and they're praying that Artest's recent meeting with Stern at the league offices in New York is a sign that a reinstatement is forthcoming. But it's not, based on everything we keep hearing.

We await Stern's further pronouncements on this one as much as anyone, but as Stern has said often lately, he prefers to maintain a "never say never" stance publicly simply because that's his general philosophy on life. And as reported in this cyberspace last week, it's believed that Stern applies the "never say never" clause in this specific case because of his fondness for Pacers owners Herb and Mel Simon. In a bow to the Simons, Stern doesn't want to make Indiana's punishment seem even harsher than it already is by publicly crushing reinstatement hopes. Yet you can rest assured that it would be a major surprise if Stern reversed course and allowed Artest to return for the playoffs. No one we have encountered expects it.

    Sounds like he's afraid

But the explanation that announcing that Artest is out for sure as being too harsh is the craziest thing I've ever read. How it is more harsh

    I agree. That's just bass-ackwards.

Its a worse punishment to the Simons to drag this thing out, either way.

On the other hand, if Stern never reduces the punishment, which was upheld by an arbitrator -- and that's the outcome most rational people expect -- then what part of "Ron's supsended for the rest of the season" did people not understand? This "hope" isn't really being perpetrated by the Simons/ Pacers; its just misguided wishful thinking.
Why do the things that we treasure most, slip away in time
Till to the music we grow deaf, to God's beauty blind
Why do the things that connect us slowly pull us apart?
Till we fall away in our own darkness, a stranger to our own hearts
And life itself, rushing over me
Life itself, the wind in black elms,
Life itself in your heart and in your eyes, I can't make it without you

I agree Hicks. I think he is making it worse by dangling Ron out there knowing all the while that there is no chance in Hades he'll let him return.

FARKING A$$HOLE!! Just tell us it's not happening instead of toying with the emotions of the fans!!!! PUTA SU MADRE MAMA PINGA!

    And what is this crap??

"Fears of unsafe driving conditions in the Northeast on Friday forced the postponement of Stern's all-day visit to ESPN's Bristol campus -- and led us to this fallback plan."

Is the weather really that bad up there? I mean, from what I've seen on the weather channel they are having some snow flurries. BIG DEAL!! There are ALWAYS snow flurries up there this time of year! I think Stern was told how many questions there were regarding Artest and pu$$ed out! He's just making an excuse not to answer the question. But I'm sure it's all out of respect for the Simons'. Does he even have to be in Bristol to answer chat questions?? It's a friggin CHAT! Log on from your bathroom computer while you're practicing your "Heil Stern" in the mirror!

    AAARRRRRRRGGGGGHHHHH!!!!!
