The Rules of Pacers Digest

Hello everyone,

Whether your are a long standing forum member or whether you have just registered today, it's a good idea to read and review the rules below so that you have a very good idea of what to expect when you come to Pacers Digest.

A quick note to new members: Your posts will not immediately show up when you make them. An administrator has to approve at least your first post before the forum software will later upgrade your account to the status of a fully-registered member. This usually happens within a couple of hours or so after your post(s) is/are approved, so you may need to be a little patient at first.

Why do we do this? So that it's more difficult for spammers (be they human or robot) to post, and so users who are banned cannot immediately re-register and start dousing people with verbal flames.

Below are the rules of Pacers Digest. After you have read them, you will have a very good sense of where we are coming from, what we expect, what we don't want to see, and how we react to things.

Rule #1

Pacers Digest is intended to be a place to discuss basketball without having to deal with the kinds of behaviors or attitudes that distract people from sticking with the discussion of the topics at hand. These unwanted distractions can come in many forms, and admittedly it can sometimes be tricky to pin down each and every kind that can rear its ugly head, but we feel that the following examples and explanations cover at least a good portion of that ground and should at least give people a pretty good idea of the kinds of things we actively discourage:

"Anyone who __________ is a liar / a fool / an idiot / a blind homer / has their head buried in the sand / a blind hater / doesn't know basketball / doesn't watch the games"

"People with intelligence will agree with me when I say that __________"

"Only stupid people think / believe / do ___________"

"I can't wait to hear something from PosterX when he/she sees that **insert a given incident or current event that will have probably upset or disappointed PosterX here**"

"He/she is just delusional"

"This thread is stupid / worthless / embarrassing"

"I'm going to take a moment to point and / laugh at PosterX / GroupOfPeopleY who thought / believed *insert though/belief here*"

"Remember when PosterX said OldCommentY that no longer looks good? "

In general, if a comment goes from purely on topic to something 'ad hominem' (personal jabs, personal shots, attacks, flames, however you want to call it, towards a person, or a group of people, or a given city/state/country of people), those are most likely going to be found intolerable.

We also dissuade passive aggressive behavior. This can be various things, but common examples include statements that are basically meant to imply someone is either stupid or otherwise incapable of holding a rational conversation. This can include (but is not limited to) laughing at someone's conclusions rather than offering an honest rebuttal, asking people what game they were watching, or another common problem is Poster X will say "that player isn't that bad" and then Poster Y will say something akin to "LOL you think that player is good". We're not going to tolerate those kinds of comments out of respect for the community at large and for the sake of trying to just have an honest conversation.

Now, does the above cover absolutely every single kind of distraction that is unwanted? Probably not, but you should by now have a good idea of the general types of things we will be discouraging. The above examples are meant to give you a good feel for / idea of what we're looking for. If something new or different than the above happens to come along and results in the same problem (that being, any other attitude or behavior that ultimately distracts from actually just discussing the topic at hand, or that is otherwise disrespectful to other posters), we can and we will take action to curb this as well, so please don't take this to mean that if you managed to technically avoid saying something exactly like one of the above examples that you are then somehow off the hook.

That all having been said, our goal is to do so in a generally kind and respectful way, and that doesn't mean the moment we see something we don't like that somebody is going to be suspended or banned, either. It just means that at the very least we will probably say something about it, quite possibly snipping out the distracting parts of the post in question while leaving alone the parts that are actually just discussing the topics, and in the event of a repeating or excessive problem, then we will start issuing infractions to try to further discourage further repeat problems, and if it just never seems to improve, then finally suspensions or bans will come into play. We would prefer it never went that far, and most of the time for most of our posters, it won't ever have to.

A slip up every once and a while is pretty normal, but, again, when it becomes repetitive or excessive, something will be done. Something occasional is probably going to be let go (within reason), but when it starts to become habitual or otherwise a pattern, odds are very good that we will step in.

There's always a small minority that like to push people's buttons and/or test their own boundaries with regards to the administrators, and in the case of someone acting like that, please be aware that this is not a court of law, but a private website run by people who are simply trying to do the right thing as they see it. If we feel that you are a special case that needs to be dealt with in an exceptional way because your behavior isn't explicitly mirroring one of our above examples of what we generally discourage, we can and we will take atypical action to prevent this from continuing if you are not cooperative with us.

Also please be aware that you will not be given a pass simply by claiming that you were 'only joking,' because quite honestly, when someone really is just joking, for one thing most people tend to pick up on the joke, including the person or group that is the target of the joke, and for another thing, in the event where an honest joke gets taken seriously and it upsets or angers someone, the person who is truly 'only joking' will quite commonly go out of his / her way to apologize and will try to mend fences. People who are dishonest about their statements being 'jokes' do not do so, and in turn that becomes a clear sign of what is really going on. It's nothing new.

In any case, quite frankly, the overall quality and health of the entire forum's community is more important than any one troublesome user will ever be, regardless of exactly how a problem is exhibiting itself, and if it comes down to us having to make a choice between you versus the greater health and happiness of the entire community, the community of this forum will win every time.

Lastly, there are also some posters, who are generally great contributors and do not otherwise cause any problems, who sometimes feel it's their place to provoke or to otherwise 'mess with' that small minority of people described in the last paragraph, and while we possibly might understand why you might feel you WANT to do something like that, the truth is we can't actually tolerate that kind of behavior from you any more than we can tolerate the behavior from them. So if we feel that you are trying to provoke those other posters into doing or saying something that will get themselves into trouble, then we will start to view you as a problem as well, because of the same reason as before: The overall health of the forum comes first, and trying to stir the pot with someone like that doesn't help, it just makes it worse. Some will simply disagree with this philosophy, but if so, then so be it because ultimately we have to do what we think is best so long as it's up to us.

If you see a problem that we haven't addressed, the best and most appropriate course for a forum member to take here is to look over to the left of the post in question. See underneath that poster's name, avatar, and other info, down where there's a little triangle with an exclamation point (!) in it? Click that. That allows you to report the post to the admins so we can definitely notice it and give it a look to see what we feel we should do about it. Beyond that, obviously it's human nature sometimes to want to speak up to the poster in question who has bothered you, but we would ask that you try to refrain from doing so because quite often what happens is two or more posters all start going back and forth about the original offending post, and suddenly the entire thread is off topic or otherwise derailed. So while the urge to police it yourself is understandable, it's best to just report it to us and let us handle it. Thank you!

All of the above is going to be subject to a case by case basis, but generally and broadly speaking, this should give everyone a pretty good idea of how things will typically / most often be handled.

Rule #2

If the actions of an administrator inspire you to make a comment, criticism, or express a concern about it, there is a wrong place and a couple of right places to do so.

The wrong place is to do so in the original thread in which the administrator took action. For example, if a post gets an infraction, or a post gets deleted, or a comment within a larger post gets clipped out, in a thread discussing Paul George, the wrong thing to do is to distract from the discussion of Paul George by adding your off topic thoughts on what the administrator did.

The right places to do so are:

A) Start a thread about the specific incident you want to talk about on the Feedback board. This way you are able to express yourself in an area that doesn't throw another thread off topic, and this way others can add their two cents as well if they wish, and additionally if there's something that needs to be said by the administrators, that is where they will respond to it.

B) Send a private message to the administrators, and they can respond to you that way.

If this is done the wrong way, those comments will be deleted, and if it's a repeating problem then it may also receive an infraction as well.

Rule #3

If a poster is bothering you, and an administrator has not or will not deal with that poster to the extent that you would prefer, you have a powerful tool at your disposal, one that has recently been upgraded and is now better than ever: The ability to ignore a user.

When you ignore a user, you will unfortunately still see some hints of their existence (nothing we can do about that), however, it does the following key things:

A) Any post they make will be completely invisible as you scroll through a thread.

B) The new addition to this feature: If someone QUOTES a user you are ignoring, you do not have to read who it was, or what that poster said, unless you go out of your way to click on a link to find out who it is and what they said.

To utilize this feature, from any page on Pacers Digest, scroll to the top of the page, look to the top right where it says 'Settings' and click that. From the settings page, look to the left side of the page where it says 'My Settings', and look down from there until you see 'Edit Ignore List' and click that. From here, it will say 'Add a Member to Your List...' Beneath that, click in the text box to the right of 'User Name', type in or copy & paste the username of the poster you are ignoring, and once their name is in the box, look over to the far right and click the 'Okay' button. All done!

Rule #4

Regarding infractions, currently they carry a value of one point each, and that point will expire in 31 days. If at any point a poster is carrying three points at the same time, that poster will be suspended until the oldest of the three points expires.

Rule #5

When you share or paste content or articles from another website, you must include the URL/link back to where you found it, who wrote it, and what website it's from. Said content will be removed if this doesn't happen.

An example:

If I copy and paste an article from the Indianapolis Star website, I would post something like this:

http://www.linktothearticlegoeshere.com/article
Title of the Article
Author's Name
Indianapolis Star

Rule #6

We cannot tolerate illegal videos on Pacers Digest. This means do not share any links to them, do not mention any websites that host them or link to them, do not describe how to find them in any way, and do not ask about them. Posts doing anything of the sort will be removed, the offenders will be contacted privately, and if the problem becomes habitual, you will be suspended, and if it still persists, you will probably be banned.

The legal means of watching or listening to NBA games are NBA League Pass Broadband (for US, or for International; both cost money) and NBA Audio League Pass (which is free). Look for them on NBA.com.

Rule #7

Provocative statements in a signature, or as an avatar, or as the 'tagline' beneath a poster's username (where it says 'Member' or 'Administrator' by default, if it is not altered) are an unwanted distraction that will more than likely be removed on sight. There can be shades of gray to this, but in general this could be something political or religious that is likely going to provoke or upset people, or otherwise something that is mean-spirited at the expense of a poster, a group of people, or a population.

It may or may not go without saying, but this goes for threads and posts as well, particularly when it's not made on the off-topic board (Market Square).

We do make exceptions if we feel the content is both innocuous and unlikely to cause social problems on the forum (such as wishing someone a Merry Christmas or a Happy Easter), and we also also make exceptions if such topics come up with regards to a sports figure (such as the Lance Stephenson situation bringing up discussions of domestic abuse and the law, or when Jason Collins came out as gay and how that lead to some discussion about gay rights).

However, once the discussion seems to be more/mostly about the political issues instead of the sports figure or his specific situation, the thread is usually closed.

Rule #8

We prefer self-restraint and/or modesty when making jokes or off topic comments in a sports discussion thread. They can be fun, but sometimes they derail or distract from a topic, and we don't want to see that happen. If we feel it is a problem, we will either delete or move those posts from the thread.

Rule #9

Generally speaking, we try to be a "PG-13" rated board, and we don't want to see sexual content or similarly suggestive content. Vulgarity is a more muddled issue, though again we prefer things to lean more towards "PG-13" than "R". If we feel things have gone too far, we will step in.

Rule #10

We like small signatures, not big signatures. The bigger the signature, the more likely it is an annoying or distracting signature.

Rule #11

Do not advertise anything without talking about it with the administrators first. This includes advertising with your signature, with your avatar, through private messaging, and/or by making a thread or post.

  • My thoughts on game #5

I hope I'm not repeating what others have already posted, I have not read anything on here yet as I had to watch all the post game stuff.

Let me start with with Stephen Jackson. I don't care what anyone else thinks, or what Slick says, I LIKE JACKSON. I like my basketball players to be tough mentally and physically and Jax is both. I like players who really go after it and aren't afraid to make mistakes. I love players who are willing and capable of hitting tough shots late in playoffs games. Is Jax perfect - no, is he frustrating - Yes. But I love him, I hope he is here for a lot of years. Jackson gives everything he has, and he shows every emotion he has, often too much so, but I can put up with it becausze he is a winner.

Jamaal Tinsley makes such a remarkable difference. The Pacers are a different team when he in on the floor. I love AJ as much as anyone. And AJ made the biggest shot of the game, when he hit a 3 with about 7 minutes to go in the of 4th, Pacers had not scored a FG in about 8 minutes. But AJ is not JT. Jamaal makes the game so much easier for everyone, he just makes plays, he creates offense, he breaks pressure and without Jamaal the Pacers are not nearly as good. His defense off the ball coming up with steals was a huge key tonight. He is disruptive on the defensive end and yet he makes everything work on the offensive end. Doc said they were worried JT would play and they know they can't pressure him

Dale Davis did not look old tonight, not old at all. He played with so much heart so much toughness, so much force tonight that it permeated the whole team. He was a man tonight, he set the tone, and he proved a huge lift tonight. I'm sure Peck will discuss DD some more. Rick Carlisle had some very nice things to say about Dale that were very heartfelt and inspiring.

The Pacers collective will tonight was incredible, they played their game, they forced the Celtics into a lot of turnovers, as Mike Brown likes to say the Pacers were able to grind out the game. Doc Rivers said after the game that the Pacers experience and poise was the difference tonight and I agree.

A lot of other player played well also, but I want to read what others have posted.

Pacers help defense was much better tonight, they helped on PP and yet were able to cover the 3 point shooters

Walker worried me all night. Had he hit a few more makeable shots, the game outcome could have been different.

Tinsley was a major reason we won, for sure. Boston simply can not press us effectively when Jamaal is in the game. Plus, I think we've had time to adjust some to their small ball lineup. In the second half, playing at times with both Jamaal and AJ on the floor worked.

Tonight JO played the way I want him to play. He took good shots, concentrated more on rebounding and defense, and he didn't allow the stripes or the Celtics to change how he played.

This was an unexpected win. My hope had been to win game six and then go into Boston and steal game seven. Now we need to hold court on Thursday, something that will probably not be very easy.

Boston likely will be the more desperate team. And in this series, the more desperate team has won. Certainly that was the case tonight and last Saturday.

I'm not exactly sure when it happened in the first half, but the run we had with Pollard hitting two jumpers and the rest of the bench out playing Boston's really set us up nicely. Even though they dug themselves out of that hole, it took some effort that hurt them towards the end.

Yeah Pollard was KEY. Tins is such a difference maker, he dribbles the ball so nicely.

Dale and Jermaines Defense was stellar tonight. Defense won this game tonight.

I only got to see bits and pieces (mostly listened to the Audio League Pass feed due to being away from the TV). Slick and Mark describing the action did not at all do justice to the smoothness of the half-court setup with Mel in there to dish out the ball.

Watching what I could, it seemed like a completely different team out there because the ball was waiting when the cutter arrived.

I don't care if Mel scores at all, the movement of the ball is critical and his ability to control the flow of the offense is vital.

I echo this comment. I have been posting the last week or so that our role players, Davis, Pollard, and Foster, need to give us a little bit on offense. I think that if they are wide open, and particularly when Jermaine is double or quadruple teamed, then they need to have the green light. Our offense shouldn't revolve around these guys, but we make it way too easy on Boston. We let them eat up shot clock time with their defensive pressure on the ball, and then, depending on our lineup, the ball is going to Jermaine/Reggie/Jax most of the time. Their defense collapses on those guys, and we have trouble beating the shot clock, much less scoring.

Tonight we really opened things up. Our ball movement and passing were unquestionably better, but Davis, Foster, Pollard, and Jones all made huge contributions tonight. I was hard on these guys the other night, and I make not apologies for it, but they really played well tonight. Job well done by the Pacers and its coaching staff tonight.
When you're playing against a stacked deck, compete even harder. Show the world how much you'll fight for the winners circle. If you do, someday the cellophane will crackle off a fresh pack, one that belongs to you, and the cards will be stacked in your favor.

Please Doc, keep starting Ricky Davis. I think the combo of Pierce, Walker, and Davis all starting is way too many hogs for the little bit of steak on the floor. Pierce wasn't able to go off until late in the game, while Davis was inconsistent all night.

Once again I will say; Can Gary Payton do anything without hooking his opponent, and why isn't it called?
"It's just unfortunate that we've been penalized so much this year and nothing has happened to the Pistons, the Palace or the city of Detroit," he said. "It's almost like it's always our fault. The league knows it. They should be ashamed of themselves to let the security be as lax as it is around here."

Re: My thoughts on game #5

I'll just stick my thoughts here.

I thought the one single thing that changed the game happened very early on.

Scot Pollard hit some jump shots & the bench kept scoring thus draining the entire energy from Boston.

Don't get me wrong, Jamaal was the most important player on the floor for us & without him we probably lose. But when Jeff & Scot came in & not only kept the lead but built on it I thought that really rocked the Celtics world.

Normally I pay little attention to the refs. because you should never put yourself into the position to where they can change a game for you. But I thought last nights crew was pretty inconsistant. They would allow some contact at times & then call touch fouls at other times. This went both ways btw.

The one thing that Jamaal did do that was very very very important was be so effective that at the end of the game they had to take Payton off of Miller & put him on Jamaal. That ended up biting them in the @ss as Reggie nailed a huge three on them.

The give & go between Jermaine & Jackson last night was very devistating to the Celtic interior defense. Oh if only J.O. would do that every game.....

I don't want to pick on the guy because I know he is injured but I just wasn't impressed with Fred Jones last night. He stayed with his man for the most part but I didn't find his defense stiffiling enough to make up for the utter lack of offense he was producing.

James Jones is living a dream right now. Second round pick stepping up & hitting clutch shots & playing solid D against a legit star player.

I won't even talk about Dale because I always do, you guys have go that covered. I just wish some of you would not ride the "old" bandwagon from game to game. He has good games & he has bad games just like every player in the NBA. Not everytime he plays bad is it because he is Old, sometime he just has a bad game. But he will give you far more solid games than bad ones.

                  Thursday's game scares me.

We all better say a prayer right now for Jamaal's foot & hope he can play.

Tins was huge as was Scot and JJ (almost got himself a 4pt play). Jeff did a good job as well and I wish he was in there more (4 pts and 6 rbs in 13 min). Anybody notice Freddie didn't score and was 0-1 in 13 min and Austin and Eddie didn't play?

I love Jax too UB. I love a player with so much heart. I just wish he would learn to compose himself a little bit more, but I can't knock somebody that plays with that much passion.

Reggie didn't get a lot of points, but he was still crucial. Although he took a couple of shots towards the end that I was questioning. They seemed to be early in the shotclock and he didn't have a good look. Of course if he would of hit those, they would of been key shots.

I just want us to close things out tomorrow because I do not want to go back to Paul's house for game 7.

Re: My thoughts on game #5

Jeff is looking better than he has in quite awhile, I assume because he's pl;ayed very little in this series that is helping him heal. He kept a few offensive rebounds alive that were just huge.

One thing that is amazing, and both Clark and Al mentioned this during the game with Tinsley back in the starting lineup it helps the bench so much, when you have AJ coming off to spell JT it is so huge and so much better than having Gill or Freddie coming off to spell AJ, that upgrade changes everything.

If you read Kravitz Column today you saw that the Pacers knew Tinsley was going to start as of Monday.

The strange thing about Dale Davis and this has been true his entire career, he's never been a guy who gets a ton of rebounds (has he ever averaged more than 10 per game for a whole season) but late in the game he'll get the huge defensive and offensive rebound. It is uncanny.

Who could be a litle upset about DD taking all his minutes, Jeff foster, but he's such a team guy, read this quote

It's good to have him back in the fold because he brings something we didn't have before," Pacers backup center Jeff Foster said. "It's definitely a toughness, a different mentality. He's a guy who goes in there and does all the little things, and you have to have a guy like that on your team to win."

I would argue that Jeff provides many of the same things, but in a different way.

Re: My thoughts on game #5

Guess I'll add my 2 cents worth. This game was so obvious though that I won't say anything anyone doesn't know.

Jamal Tinsley - well, we all knew that if he played it would make a huge difference. Amazing what penetrating and breaking down a defense - or at least stressing it - will do. Plus just managing to get the ball across half-court. If I were gonna have a big worry it'd be this: Look for Boston to bring waves of ball pressure in game 6 any time Tinsley isn't playing - HUGE ball pressure. We all saw the TO's at the end of the 3rd. Doc saw it too. The Pacers need to start bringing everyone into the backcourt, including their big men as an outlet in the middle of the floor. Hope JT stays healthy and can up his PT from 28 to low 30's. The odd thing is, AJ played the same way for much of the 2nd half of the season once Tinsley was out but he hasn't this series. Of course the one time he drove the ball he pitched it out to Reggie for an open 3.

What Tinsley does, besides bringing the ball up is when someone sets a high screen for him, he does something with it. Generally he turns toward the basket coming off the screen and makes something happen. With AJ it's just a couple seconds to diminish ball pressure but nothing comes of it.

As for the rest of the game - nobody really stepped up - and everyone did. IMO one of the key moments of the game was in the 2nd when the reserves came in and Pollard and Foster both hit a couple of shots. I didn't know Pollard had a 20-footer in him and that one spinning bank shot Foster made - where did THAT come from?

DD didn't look old this game. In game 4 he couldn't seem to get off the floor - the one dunk he did make he just barely managed to get over the rim. Last night he was elbows above the rim. And that short jump shot I'd been wondering where it'd gone? The one he used to hit regularly in '99 and '00? IIRC he hit two. Plus defense, tough rebounds, etc.

Jax sucked the first 3-1/2 quarters, at least on offense. He made up for it the last 5 minutes, esp with that 3 heave.

Reggie didn't do that much - until you needed him to. It's funny - that role is fine for him but until the 2nd half of this season how many times has he passed up or missed those kind of shots? The fact that he's been heavily involved in the offense helps him keep in rhythm.

JJ made some plays and screwed some up. The 3 was nice but he had some TO's and couldn't hit the FT's. But I thought I was seeing double, first when he hit the 3 and then when he did the little pump-fake move into a floater in the lane, I swear at that moment I thought it was more than watching a great player and learning - can you say gene-splicing? Unreal.

JO was JO - and he wasn't. What I REALLY liked and salute him for was that even though he could have gone to the line a lot more than he did, I didn't see him gripe about it at all. Just kept his chin up and played, as opposed to Jax.

Classic case of a team win - nobody really took over the game because nobody had to. Everyone but Freddie chipped in with something and you can legitimately say that if you take any one of those players and his contribution away, the Pacers don't win - except I have the sense that if, say, Foster doesn't contribute the way he did someone else would have picked him up.

Of course the most important key - The Pacers made it their type of game, not Boston's. Unless Pierce or Davis goes nuts, the Celts can't win that sort of game, any more than the Pacers can win their sort of game. And in the playoffs, all you need to make it a grinding game is will and effort. From game 1 I felt this was Indy's series because of the style of play contrasts and I still feel that way. They need to come out for game 6 the same way as game 5 - it's a must-win and they can't go back to Boston.

Really enjoyable game to watch - and I didn't see the refs as the problem a lot of people did. There were a few weak calls but for the most part they let the players decide the game.

"That's what it's about," he said. "In order for us to be a good team, I have to be able to get more output. Even if I'm not scoring, I have to be able to do things on defense."

                          I really like hearing that.

And as for Freddy, the guy is just too hurt to be playing. Maybe he shouldn't play at all next game, and get healed more for the following game.
Don't ask Marvin Harrison what he did during the bye week. "Batman never told where the Bat Cave is," he explained.

                            My life =

So I'm working late last night, for the third night in a row (including Sunday). I try to tune into the Audio League Pass, and the IT knuckleheads have turned the firewall back on.

So we go to dinner at a sports bar down the street. Can't watch the game because they don't get NBA-TV.

Jay's_Wife@Section204 told me I missed a great game. Maybe I'll get to watch it tonight. Meanwhile, I'm going to try to avoid all the threads about the game until then...

At least we think our meeting/ proposal went well. After all, there's only a couple million at stake... (none of which, probably, will ever make it to me )
Why do the things that we treasure most, slip away in time
Till to the music we grow deaf, to God's beauty blind
Why do the things that connect us slowly pull us apart?
Till we fall away in our own darkness, a stranger to our own hearts
And life itself, rushing over me
Life itself, the wind in black elms,
Life itself in your heart and in your eyes, I can't make it without you
