Watching game 1 tonight, PHO @ SEA. I haven't seen Phoenix much this season and you can really see that they miss Cappie. Seattle is just too big/tall/strong for Phoenix.

With Cappie and Taurasi together they were so offensively talented and complimentary that they could overcome size disadvantages with the pace of their offensive system. Dupree is a nice player but she's not a facilitator like Pondexter and she doesn't replace the perimeter defense Cappie can bring when she wants to (she always turns that up in the playoffs).

There was a lot of talk about whether Cappie would be as good in the alpha dog role as she was when paired with Taurasi. Looks to me like Cappie got better this year and Diana needed her more than people thought.

http://www.cbssports.com/collegefoot...rate-divisions

Division something
Illinois
Wisconsin

Division something else
Iowa
Michigan
Michigan State
Minnesota
Nebraska
Northwestern

My first opinion is Purdue and Indiana get royally ****ed. Ohio State, Penn State and Wisconsin are historically very strong. Iowa is good now, but there's no guarantee they will continue. Nebraska seems to be rebounding, but who knows if that will continue. And Michigan, who has really fallen apart, gets a huge break IMO.

If Nebraska kicks *** and if/when Michigan rebounds I guess I'll feel better about this, but right now I'd still rather have had it just cut south from Chicago.

Lastly, Indiana at least gets MSU (no offense to my Spartan relatives), but Purdue trades its previous rival of Northwestern for Iowa. Great. :suicide:

[edit] Looking at the schedules, interesting that due to the home/away format, Illinois, IU, and Purdue won't play Nebraska until at least 2013. If they stay with the home/away, and thanks to the Penn State "rivalry" one of those teams won't play Nebraska until 2015.

INDIANAPOLIS -- The death of a 13-year-old motorcycle rider at Indianapolis Motor Speedway cast a shadow over Sunday's races at the historic track and prompted mourning competitors to defend the development system for the dangerous circuit.

Peter Lenz of Vancouver, Wash., fell off his bike during the warmup lap for the day's first race at Indianapolis and was run over by another motorcycle, driven by a 12-year-old. Medical workers immediately placed Lenz in a neck brace, put him on a stretcher and began chest compressions while taking him to a hospital.

Several hours later, he was pronounced dead.

The Marion County coroner's office said Lenz died from blunt force trauma. More details could be released Monday following an autopsy on the youngest driver or rider ever killed at the 101-year-old speedway.

"Peter passed away early this morning when he was apparently struck by another rider," read a posting on Lenz's Facebook page, which was signed "Dad."

"He passed doing what he loved and had his go fast face on as he pulled onto the track," the posting said. "The world lost one of its brightest lights today. God Bless Peter and the other rider involved. 45 is on another road we can only hope to reach. Miss you kiddo."

Lenz rode the No. 45 bike, and his father was at the track Sunday.

It was the first death at the track since IndyCar driver Tony Renna was killed in testing in October 2003.

Lenz had emerged as one of America's youngest rising stars.

At age 11, he earned the "expert" license from the American Federation of Motorcyclists, and in March 2009, Lenz became the youngest rider ever to win an AFM race. This year, competing in the U.S. Grand Prix Racers Union series, Lenz had four wins, five podium finishes and was leading the MD250H classification in points.

The grown-up resume just didn't match his appearance. Listed at 4-foot-11 and 81 pounds, the baby-faced Lenz described his profession as "kid."

"Our hearts go out to the parents, family and friends of Peter Lenz," speedway CEO Jeff Belskus said in a statement. "Words cannot adequately express the sadness of our company and our employees about this tragic incident, and Peter is in our thoughts and prayers."

It wasn't the first time Lenz was involved in a serious crash.

A mechanical failure last season left Lenz with four broken bones and a severed radial nerve -- all of which required surgery. By November, Lenz was healthy again and by spring, he was back in Victory Lane.

The fatal accident almost certainly will spark a debate about how young is too young for racers to be competing on one of the world's best-known tracks, whether it's inside a car or riding a motorcycle capable of exceeding 120 mph in a straightaway.

The USGPRU sanctions races across the nation, billing itself as a development circuit for motorcycle racers from ages 12 to 18. The hope is these riders eventually will compete in a world-class series.

Lenz seemed to be on his way to the top before the accident. He was struck by 12-year-old Xavier Zayat, of Flushing, N.Y., who escaped injury and did not race after the crash.

"We are deeply saddened by this tragic loss, but know that Peter is racing even faster in the sky," the Lenz family said in a statement. "Our thoughts and prayers are now with the other racer and his family, who were also involved in this tragedy."

Racers insist age has never been the issue.

American Colin Edwards was running 250cc bikes at age 17, and Indy MotoGP runner-up Ben Spies was competing on the 125cc circuit at age 12.

"That's not like a bike too big for him, you know, I mean this is our sport, we chose to do it," said American Nicky Hayden, the 2006 world champ who called the death "terrible."

"I mean, sure, we know going in the consequences."

But are new rules needed?

Those in racing circles say no, comparing the sport to other potentially dangerous sports such as football and gymnastics. When asked about running at Indy, speedway officials pointed out that the series has stops at potentially more dangerous tracks.

USGPRU officials said this was the first fatality in the series in nine years.

Still, racing conditions were not ideal this weekend at Indy.

Hot, dry weather turned the bumpy, 2.621-mile course into a slick track that tested the world's best riders.

Reigning world champ Valentino Rossi fell four times, including a spill Sunday morning during a 20-minute warmup session. Sunday's Moto2 race was shortened after a big wreck on the first lap took out four drivers.

"This was the most difficult race for everyone," MotoGP winner Dani Pedrosa said. "The conditions were very hard because of the heat and the asphalt was very greasy."

After a brief delay to clear the track, the USGPRU race was restarted. Had they known the severity of the injuries, one official said they would have considered canceling the race. The three other races all started on time, though Lenz was never far from the racers' thoughts.

"This is an ugly, terrible part of this sport," USGPRU chief steward Stewart Aitken-Cade said. "You do what you can to stop it from happening as best you can. That's really all that you can do."

"Any time a racer is injured in this way and loses his life, it's tough, adult or child," Aitken-Cade added. "It just makes it especially difficult when it's a young guy like Peter."

Robbie Hummel dribbled a basketball, laughed along with assistant coach Paul Lusk and began shooting Tuesday afternoon in Mackey Arena.

They were just individual drills, but for the first time since suffering a season-ending knee injury in February at Minnesota, the 6-foot-8 forward participated in a structured basketball environment.

He will visit with Dr. Donald Shelbourne on Tuesday, and after that appointment, Hummel hopes to be cleared to play five-on-five.

"I'm excited to get back out here," Hummel said. "I'm a little bit nervous, but I guess that's part of it. I am going to do everything that is not one-on-one.

"I haven't been cleared to play yet, but that should be coming in the next few weeks. I'm chomping at the bit. I'm bored. I'm sick of lifting weights and not being able to play."

Through a rigorous weight training program, Hummel weighs a solid 230 pounds. His upper body is chiseled.

"It was sort of planned, because we knew that I would be able to work on my upper body," Hummel said. "It's one of the positives that could come out of this negative.

"The coaches presented that as a possibility. I could improve my strength, and it was good to try to get that done in the offseason."

Hummel has been doing individual shooting drills, but until Tuesday, he wasn't participating in team drills.

"I feel good," Hummel said. "I feel like I'm almost normal. I'm looking forward to getting back out here. Physically, I can't jump at all. My vertical jump is horrible.

"But everyone I've talked to said that will come back. That's not a huge concern at this point."

As Hummel worked out, many teammates, including E'Twaun Moore, JaJuan Johnson and Lewis Jackson, looked on, eager to see how far Hummel has come since surgery in March.

"He has done a lot of stuff by himself," Johnson said. "For him to get back out here is pretty cool. I'm happy to see him out there. That means he is one step closer."

Jackson, who missed most of last season with a broken left foot, wants Hummel to take his time. Purdue's regular-season opener is Nov. 14.

"We're eager, but I don't care if it takes Rob until two days before practice," Jackson said. "Everybody here understands the situation. We want him to be there, but we're not eager for him to rush into it. I don't want him to come back 60 to 75 percent.

"I know it's tough not being able to be out here and compete. We want him to be 100 percent. I know how he feels. An ACL injury is a way more serious injury than mine. He just wants to help his team."

Hummel acknowledges that Purdue trainer Jeff Stein has had to remind him to be patient.

"Jeff had to slow me down," Hummel said. "It was challenging, because I'm used to playing basketball year-round."

For now, Hummel is wearing a protective knee brace.

"I honestly don't know how long they want me to wear it," he said. "I would hope I wouldn't have to wear it at all during the season. But that's one of those I guess I will listen to the doctor."

Hummel appreciates the support he has received from fans, but he has had a difficult time maintaining privacy in his life. He had no idea fans cared so much about his every move.

"It's surprising to see how crazy all the (social) media stuff is," Hummel said. "If I go to a golf course, people find out about it. If I'm at the movies, people find out about it.

"The whole Twitter and Facebook thing gets kind of crazy. You have to be careful, even when you're just out playing golf. You have to be careful what you are saying and who you are around."

It's getting messy out there, ladies and gentlemen! Although the top four EC playoff teams have been identified - Fever, NY Liberty, Wash Mistiques and ATL Dream - except for the Dream it's still unsure exactly where the remaining 3 teams will fall in the playoff picture. Below is a run down of the various scenarios. So, pay very close attention. It's very tricky!

Fever
Current Overall Record: 21-11
Current Conf. Standing: 13-9
# Games Remaining: 2
# EC Games Remaining: 0
# WC Games Remaining: 2 (Silver Stars/Linkx)
Best Overall Record Attainable: 23-11
Worst Overall Record Attainable: 21-13
Best Conf. Record Attainable: 13-9
Best Possible Seeding: 1st
Worse Possible Seeding: 3rd

Liberty
Current Overall Record: 21-11
Current Conf. Standing: 13-7
# Games Remaining: 2
# EC Games Remaining: 2 (Mystics/Sun)
# WC Games Remaining: 0
Best Overall Record Attainable: 23-11
Worse Overall Record Attainable: 21-13
Best Conf. Record Attainable: 15-7
Worst Conf. Record Attainable: 13-9
Best Possible Seeding: 1st
Worse Possible Seeding: 2rd

Mystics
Current Overall Record: 20-12
Current Conf. Standing: 11-9
# Games Remaining: 2
# EC Games Remaining: 0
# WC Games Remaining: 2 (Liberty/Dream)
Best Overall Record Attainable: 22-12
Worst Overall Record Attainable: 20-14
Best Conf. Record Attainable: 13-9
Worst Conf. Record Attainable: 11-11
Best Possible Seeding: 1st
Worse Possible Seeding: 3rd

Dream
Current Overall Record: 19-14
Current Conf. Standing: 10-11
# Games Remaining: 1
# EC Games Remaining: 1 (Mystics)
# WC Games Remaining: 0
Best Overall Record Attainable: 20-14
Worse Overall Record Attainable: 19-15
Best Conf. Record Attainable: 11-11
Worst Conf. Record Attainable: 10-12
Best Possible Seeding: 4th
Worse Possible Seeding: 4th

Possible scenarios for Fever & Liberty:
(1) If the Liberty loss 1 game and the Fever and Mystics win out the season, the Fever would hold 1st place outright, the Liberty 2nd by virtue of having a better conference record over the Mystics (Fever 14-8; Mystics 13-9), and the Mystics would hold 3rd place.
(2) If the Liberty and Mystics win out the season and the Fever loss 1 game, the Liberty would hold 1st place, the Mystics would hold 2nd place and the Fever would drop to 3rd because the Mystics have the better regular season record (2-1) against the Fever.
(3) If the Fever, Liberty and Mystics win their remaining games, the Liberty would have 1st place by virtue of having the best conference record (15-7), the Fever would hold 2nd place by having the better regular season record (23-11) and the Mystics would hold 3rd place.
(4) If the Fever and Liberty win their remaining games and the Mystics lose 1 game, the Liberty would hold 1st place, the Fever 2nd place and the Mistiques 3rd place.
(5) If Mystics win their remaining games, and both the Fever and Liberty lose their remaining games, the Mystics would hold 1st place and determination of 2nd and 3rd place would likely come down to which team between the Fever and Liberty had the best overall point totals since both teams would have identical overall and conference records (23-11) and both teams split their regular season wins (2-2).
(6) If the Liberty, Mystics and Fever split their remaining games, the Liberty, Fever and Mystics would hold 1st, 2nd and 3rd place, respectively, because the Liberty would have the better conference record (14-8) and the Fever would have the better regular season record (22-12) over the Mystics (21-13).

The best the Dream can do is 4th place even if they won their remaining game and the Mystics lost their remaining 2games and the two teams tied for the regular season (20-14) because the Mystics would hold the regular season head-to-head tie-breaker (2-1).

Did you get all of that? A win or a lose by the Fever, Liberty or Mystics could alter the playoff picture dramatically!
