Any possible trade the Pacers make will have to take in account the coming expansion draft.

For example, if the Pacers would trade Al and Pollard for Dampier and Claxton, or Dampier and Dunleavy, who would they then protect in the expansion draft?

If we then lose Fred Jones would the trade be worth it? Or would we not protect Reggie?

Protect Eight

1] JO
2] Artest
3] Tinsley
4] Foster
5] Dampier
6] Claxton or Dunleavy
7] Miller
8] Bender
9] F. Jones
10] Croshere
11]Brezac
12] Johnson
13] J. Jones*

14] Anderson (free agent)
15] Brewer (free agent)

*J. Jones made be restricted

The only way I think a trade makes sense is to trade two of our young guys (that we would protect) for someone really good. Or to expose Reggie to the draft.

Well, if Dampier opts out then the Pacers could not protest him, as he would be a free agent. Leaving a spot for Jones

We don't know that would happen. I think it's more likely since Dampier wants to come here that he would ask for an extension.

He's due $8,100,000, and $8,900,000, the next two years if he doesn't opt out. There's always the risk of losing millions if he opts out and then gets hurt before signing a new contract. An extension would mean he's making more money and not risking anything.
