Sadly I have a very early meeting in the morning so tonight’s thoughts will simply be bulletpoints and grades & I apologize now but thanks to Monty McCutchen & Bennett (I’ve never refereed a good game) Salvatore that third quarter made us all feel like we had just walked the Bataan Death March and I am fairly certain that we actually rotated the sun in that time frame.
• I hate to bash referees but in Salvatore’s case I never feel bad about it. He’s just bad, period. Not bad to the Pacers I’m talking about bad period. He is inconsistent and then tries to make obvious make up calls for calls he’s blown before but ends up just compounding things. I have feeling they felt like they were losing control and a fight would break out so their answer was to just whistle everything and in the process completely kill the game.
• That being said I wasn’t overly thrilled with some of our interactions with the refs. tonight. Vogel was all over them well before they went nuclear and that “T” he got was a long time in coming. However in his defense he didn’t really lose it till they just started being idiotic.
• I know a lot of people didn’t like his big lineup and well offensively it was a mess but in my mind it really was kind of the turning point of the game. Atlanta wasn’t expecting that and defensively & rebounding wise it worked like gangbusters. If Tyler could just hit that face up jumper he used to be able to hit as a rookie that would have worked fine.
• Not only did Frank switch that up and go be he also went small with three guard lineup for a good amount of time. This also worked for the most part.
• D.J. Augustine actually started off the game where I wanted to throw things at him but I’ll give him credit and say that by the end of the 3rd and all of the 4th he was in control of the ball and started to play at least defense that wasn’t Murphy like. It also helped he finally had some shots drop.
• This series should be a case study for those who don’t believe in “hot streaks”, momentum or any other form of non-mathematical equations. The courts are the same size, the goal the same height and the rules are the same. Yet home vs. home is as different as night and day for both teams.
• It was nice of David West to begin the playoffs, now let’s just hope he continues this on.
• Roy was a ball of fire in the first half but they somehow managed to slow him down or we went a different direction in the second half. Still played respectable defense though.
• Lance was doing work on the glass.
• George Hill did a nice job of running the floor and hitting his shots.
• Paul had an overall good/great game. I thought we were going to get the dunk of the decade for a min. there but dang Josh Smith had to foul him.
• Speaking of Smith when he went into that camera man apparently the camera man sustained a large cut on his head.
• I have absolutely no idea what to expect in Atlanta. I hope I return for game 1 of round 2 but I have a gut feeling I will be back for game 7 round 1.
Let’s do some grades and tonight no one will get below a C.
Paul George: A
I wish he could handle the ball better so that way when he has Korver on him or Harris for that matter he could drive and get his shot off without me panicking about him turning it over. But I’m not going to hold that against him tonight, good overall game. Not A+ necessarily but at least an A.
David West: A
Why not an A+? Not enough rebounds but other than that had a great game. Certainly the best game of the series for him, he still hesitated on a face up jumper early in the game and caused a turn over because he made a pass that he shouldn’t have, so it makes me wonder if it’s him or if the team has instructed him to attack the goal and not take jumpers. I can’t believe Frank would tell him that but it’s possible.
Roy Hibbert: A
Big Roy was working the free throw line tonight. It’s funny how those Hawks fans started off making some kind of bird sound at Roy when he shot free throws but it never affected him and after him making about his 7th or 8th they just gave it up. Worked the boards and decent defense. Didn’t have a big second half but frankly he didn’t have to.
Lance Stephenson: A-
A little out of control at times and here is irony for you. He made a horrid behind the back pass in traffic that was saved by, wait for it, the solid sure hands of Ian Mahinmi. Hit the boards hard and was just a general nuisance to Ivan Johnson. In fact got lectured by Salvatore for his antics at one point. Also he tried to join the Hawks huddle when Smith got his 5th foul and Horford was trying to rally the troops and was ushered away by Harris.
George Hill: A
Solid. Hate to be that simple but honestly it’s about the best way to describe it. He played like a point guard on both ends of the floor. Every time Atlanta thought they would make a run he would square up and nail a shot and kill their hopes.
I’m out of time so I will just give the bench an overall B+ tonight, which for our bench is akin to an A+
