Jared Wade: Pistons’ Parents Say “I’m Not Mad, I’m Just Disappointed”

(Guest recap tonight courtesy of @mike_saurus (https://twitter.com/mike_saurus). Grades by me. – JW)

The Pacers have laid down some good ol’ fashioned beatdowns this year, but none have
felt as one-sided or as significant as the axe murder they put on the Knicks tonight. It
was over before it started, as Roy Hibbert made his first three shots and the rest of
the team followed suit, jumping out to a 30-18 first-quarter lead and never looking back.

The game was 13-2 at the time I turned to my roommate and told him the game was
over. By that point Roy Hibbert was locked in early and got a few baskets, Lance
Stephenson was pushing the pace for easy transition buckets, and the team was
active and cutting on offense.

On the other side were the Pistons, so I felt pretty confident.

The offense was crisp and smooth for the first quarter, as the Pacers doubled up the
Pistons in the first, 34-17. This happened even with Paul George only taking two shots
(plus a pair of free throws), though he found other ways to stay aggressive and
involved. His ability to have a major impact on the game even without scoring was
just another step in the long-term development of the exciting wing player.

And the defense.

Indiana held the Pistons to 36.6% shooting (15-for-41) in the first half while jumping
out to a 60-34 lead. By the end of this one, the Pacers hadn’t trailed for 10 straight
quarters. The offense has improved and deserves praise, but the defense continues to
impress and gives this team the identity it needs to keep the second seed in the East.

The Pacers will need to sustain their efficiency (and I expect nothing less, especially
with Granger comes back) to make the increasingly likely Miami match up more
interesting then the pesky-but-unfulfilled series from last year; however, I feel
confident as I continue to watch these Pacers that the defense alone will keep a top
three seed.

Finally, I found it interesting that Tim Donahue tweeted out a list of Pacer teams that
had consecutive blowouts that matched and succeeded this current streak. The teams
of note were from...CONTINUE READING AT 8p9s (http://www.eightpointsnineseconds.com/2013/02/post-game-grades-pacers-make-pistons-parents-say-im-not-mad-im-just-disappointed/)

Indiana vs. Detroit rematch: Pistons seeking vindication

It's game two of a home-at-home against the Pacers, and it will be the fourth time
these squads match up. The Pistons need to bounce back strongly.

The Situation

In game one of this back-to-back against the Pacers, everything was terrible (http://www.detroitbadboys.com/2013/2/23/4020194/pistons-vs-pacers-score-2013-blowout-highlights-box-danny-granger-injury). Remember
when Sean_Corp wrote about how good that Pacers' defense has been this season? Yeah,
it was that good. Dominant. Stifling. And the offense? Awfully effective, too. On the
season, the Pistons are now 0-3 against the Pacers and the combined score of those
three games - brace yourself - is 300-238, or an average margin of victory of nearly 21
points per game for the Pacers.

Ouch.

Jose Calderon summed up the game perfectly (http://www.nba.com/pistons/features/truebluepistons_130222.html):

It's easy to explain. Easier than you think. We didn’t play defense the way
we were supposed to. We didn’t make shots. That’s what happened. When
you get a good team like Indiana playing like that... they beat the Knicks
by 30 a couple of days ago. We knew what to expect.

Sounds about right. The Pistons missed all the shots, and the Pacers made them.

But in their fourth and final meeting with the Pacers this season, the Pistons have
a chance for some vindication. Kyle Singler summed up the situation perfectly:

The Pistons host Indiana in a Saturday rematch at The Palace. Good thing
or bad thing? "There’s no right answer, I don’t think, for that," Kyle Singler
said. "We’re playing another game tomorrow and we get a chance to bounce
back from what we did today. That’s the mindset we have to have.

Keys to the Game

Forget last night: Arguably, the Pistons played their worst basketball of the
season last night. Apart from Slava's double double, literally nothing was working.
Whatever that was, forget about it.

Remember last night: Anyone who's a competitor at heart knows that getting blown
out by the opposition can serve as potent motivation. So while the Pistons would do
well to leave their poor performance behind, they'd do equally well to remember
that this is their last crack at the Pacers this year, and they've yet to fell their
division rival - that also happens to be first and also just put them over their
collective knee and gave them a good whipping.

Pacers vulnerable on the road: This isn't so much a strategical recommendation
as a simple observation...CONTINUE READING AT DETROIT BAD BOYS (http://www.detroitbadboys.com/2013/2/23/4021064/pistons-vs-pacers-2013-preview-score-highlights-rematch)

I don't think it's fair to judge Danny in terms of production for a week or so, so I won't. Obviously he's rusty, and it will take a few games to get his second wind and rhythm, but he looked limber out there, and I didn't notice any difficulties with lateral movement or mobility in general. That's far more important than him looking rusty. I'm excited, because I'm confident his rhythm only needs time, we know who Danny Granger is if he's not hindered physically.

Just because you don't like the fact that he got physical with West, which resulted in him getting a deserved technical, doesn't give you the authority to be offensive. It's pathetic!!
