NEW YORK -- Hedo Turkoglu of the Orlando Magic has been suspended without pay for twenty games for violating the terms of the NBA/NBPA Anti-Drug Program by testing positive for methenolone, it was announced today by the NBA.

Turkoglu's suspension will begin tonight when the Magic play host to the Atlanta Hawks at Amway Center.

According to wikipedia methenolone is an anabolic steroid

Wow. Bit ironic he got caught in a year where he has the least amount of playing time (bar his rookie year) and his lowest points average. I think he was finished anyway.

Through a team press release, Türkoğlu explained the positive test for the banned substance:

"While I was back home in Turkey this past summer, I was given a medication by my trainer to help recover more quickly from a shoulder injury," Türkoğlu said. "I didn't know that this was a banned substance and didn't check before taking it.

"I take full responsibility for anything that goes into my body. This was a complete error in judgment on my part and I apologize to the Orlando Magic organization, the league, my teammates, and the Magic fans. I know I have let down a lot of people and I am truly sorry for my mistake."

Rob Hennigan, the Magic's general manager, also made a statement in the team's press release.

"Hedo unknowingly took a banned substance," Hennigan said. "There are more than 125 banned substances on the NBA List, and we spend a lot of time educating our players on the contents of that list and will certainly continue to do so moving forward. We believe this was an honest mistake."

Y'know, I believe him. At least he owned up to it right away.

He certainly didn't gain much from taking them.

So Turk and Mayo. Any other guys booted for steroids?

Birdman is the only Meth guy I think (not sure they 100% acknowledged that even but IIRC it was strongly hinted at).

Everything else has been pot that I can think of.

Turk not being able to play hurts the Magic's tanking efforts.

O.J. Mayo got caught with the same thing (DHEA) Rashard Lewis got caught with. I know for sure that Lewis got his from taking Extenze. I don't know if Mayo was the same reason but he claimed it was from an energy drink.

Birdman was busted for coke from what I've been (pretty reliably) told but I've also heard meth or heroin. They're all lumped together as "drugs of abuse" so all plausible but cocaine seems to be the culprit.

Here is a good list of players that got suspended for drugs and steroids.

If the trainer says "take this, it will help you heal faster" then maybe you ought to ask what's in it... How do you say "moron" in Turkish?

I think this is proof positive that PEDs don't help NBA players.
