View Full Version : 50 Most Worthless Players in the NBA for the 2012-13 Season

Several young recently drafted bust made this list. Several of these players are guys that many Pacers fans wanted coming out of college or were free agents recently. I like that the blogger didn't just name names. He gave a valid explanation of why each player made the list and I couldn't argue against him at all.

The most surprising names IMO are:

Austin Daye
James White
Bizmack Biyombo
Josh Selby
Ish Smith (shooting a whopping 14% from the field)
Joel Pryzbilla
Nolan Smith
Jan Vesely

And notice this gem about one of our favorite punching bags and reason #1 to point at Kstat and yell "HA! HA!" like Nelson from the Simpsons:

Charlie Villanueva
Team: Detroit Pistons
Position: PF
Age: 28
2012-13 Per-Game Stats: 6.0 points, 2.2 rebounds, 0.8 assists, 0.0 blocks, 0.4 steals, 15.71 PER

At this point, I really have no idea why Charlie Villanueva is still logging minutes for Lawrence Frank's squad. All he's doing is taking away touches from the multitude of young players on the Detroit Pistons, thus hindering their development.

Plus, there's a solid chance that Villanueva is the absolute worst defensive player in the league. He's allowed opposing power forwards to post a 17.0 PER against him, according to 82games.com, but that number doesn't accurately reflect his lack of value because other players are forced to help out on his man so often.

Here's another classic example. No sense in using bold font. The entire comment is hilariously bold worthy:

Hakim Warrick
Hi-res-6758914_crop_650
Curtis Wilson-US PRESSWIRE
Team: Charlotte Bobcats
Position: PF
Age: 30
2012-13 Per-Game Stats: 2.4 points, 1.6 rebounds, 0.1 assists, 0.3 blocks, 0.3 steals, 5.31 PER

It's far too often that Hakim Warrick finds himself as out of position as he is in the picture above. The power forward doesn't try very often on defense, and the result is usually a lot of open shots for the man he's guarding, especially if the opposing big man is of the versatile variety.

This would be at least a little bit okay if he played solid offense, but that's not exactly Warrick's strength either. At least not this year, since he's shooting just 17.6 percent from the field and has recorded only a single assist thus far.

Here's one we can really appreciate:

Sam Young
Hi-res-6773410_crop_650
Pat Lovell-US PRESSWIRE

Team: Indiana Pacers

Position: SF

Age: 27

2012-13 Per-Game Stats: 4.8 points, 3.6 rebounds, 0.7 assists, 0.1 blocks, 0.4 steals, 8.74 PER

Last, but certainly not least, we have Sam Young, whose last name isn't yet a misnomer since the small forward is still only 27 years old with just three years of experience under his belt.

That said, Young plays like an old man, rarely relying on his athleticism. He prefers to use his physicality and toughness to bully defenders in one-on-one situations while playing solid defense. Of course, he doesn't get to do either of those things very often.

Young has shown an increased dependence on a nonexistent shot form behind the three-point arc now that he's with the Indiana Pacers, and the results haven't been pretty.

Ignore that this is Bleacher Report. This list is filled with really good observations about really bad players.

this list is horrible. How does Beasley make this list?

Ellington is playing well off the Grizz's bench.

BR is garbage. I dont know why I just wasted 5 mins of my life reading that

Beasley is an utter disappointment after being a #2 draft pick and he's making really good money. As the article/Slideshow said:
http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1420434-50-most-worthless-players-in-the-nba-for-the-2012-13-season/page/4

This combo-forward might be averaging 12.4 points per game for the Phoenix Suns, but he's doing so because of his featured spot in the lineup and in spite of his putrid 37.4 percent shooting from the field. With his sky-high turnover numbers and ineptness when it comes to any sort of facilitation, he's actually hurting the team more than helping it on offense.

Through 14 games, per Basketball-Reference.com, Beasley actually contributed minus-0.6 win shares on the offensive end of the court. His 87 offensive rating is absolutely terrible. According to NBA.com's advanced stats, the Suns actually score 19.9 more points per 100 possessions when the former Kansas State standout is on the bench than when he's playing.

Wayne Ellington isn't playing well off the Grizz's bench. He's had a couple of good games (literally 2 games of more than 6 points) but he's been a disappointment overall. He's had 5 games of 2 or less points and I think the Pacers have got more out of Young than the Grizzlies have out of Ellington.

This list is more about "disappointing" players. Many of these players aren't useless just not really productive because they aren't used in their proper role or maybe just slumping.
Anyway, I'd put Hibbert on that list (If Beasley gets there because he scores 12.5 ppg on 37.4%, I guess Hibbert should be considered with his 9.5 ppg and 38%)

Surprised Augustin isn't on it.

Yeah...no kidding.

For a Player to be worthless....he'd have to have ZERO ability to contribute on both ends of the floor. For now......DJ is not contributing on both ends of the floor.

Whereas for Young....I hate that he can't hit the side of a barn with a howitzer.....but the Pacers paid the vet minimum for a role Player to do one specific thing....hound the opposing Team's best Wing Scorer and he'd done a superb job of that.

Agreed. While I understand that many are disappointed at Sam Young's lack of offense I think you bring up some great points. They are only paying him the veteran minimum and he was brought in here to play defense. Plus, if Danny were healthy Sam Young would probably play less. It's just too bad that the other wing players, you know the ones who are suppose to score, haven't produced as expected. If the others would score it would allow for Young to shine a little bit.

They had to put a Pacer on there and DJ has been so worthless that they forgot he was on the team.

Why does Villanueva get minutes? Maybe because he can score and Jerebko can't and Austin is worthless?

He's taking minutes away from young players? Who???

Yes, CV is an abysmal defender, but cherry picking his season stats from when he was only playing in garbage time isn't fair to him either.

In his 4 games as part of the rotation, Villanueva is averaging 14ppg and shooting %58 from the floor.

I'm hardly his biggest fan, but pretty much everything said about him in that article was misleading. VIllanueva isn't a great player by any stretch, but he absolutely has value if he plays hard.

Hmmm....Charlie V at 5 years and 35 million or Sam Young at the vet minimum for this season...hmmm...decisions, decisions...lol

i certainly agree with his critique of lamar odom. that guy is a total bum. he quit on dallas before he even arrived. even though they won't, they have every right to demand he return every dime they ever paid him while he was there- perhaps the clippers should demand the same.
i am just glad he isn't on our roster.

'Brick' McRoberts and 'slam into the defender and throw the ball toward the basket' Hansbrough should be on there. Hans under 40% FG% is simply pathetic, he should be sent to the D league. McRoberts under 4ppg in 15mpg, he needs to join Hansbrough in the D League.

Who are you going to replace Hansbrough with? He may not be scoring like crazy or anything, but Hansbrough is not a problem area for the team. If he gets injured, we are a lot less likely to win the game. He's one of the few players that we have that will battle for every rebound regardless of which side of the court we are on.

To be fair, I have no clue how Miles would do on the court and whether he would do the same.

I like that Hansbrough is scrappy.....but his lack of athelticism will only take him so far.
