Once again the Roaming Gnome has hit the road for a series of Pacers games. By now he should be in Nevada and prepping to make the Vegas to LA drive for the Lakers game with his wife. He didn't mention where the seats are in Staples but maybe he'll pop on here and clue us in.

After LA he'll fly up to San Fran where I'll meet them for some wine country fun before hitting the Cow Town itself, Sacramento. For that game we have pretty good seats on the sideline within the first few rows. I will not be bringing a cowbell, but maybe Gnome and wield his charms and get the Maloofs to comp us some Vegas deals for making the effort.

From there will be hotfooting it back over to SF so Gnome can attempt a whirlwind tour of the City before going back over the Bay to Oaktown's Oracle, one of the crown jewels of the NBA in terms of classic environments. Right now I'd say OKC, MSG, Boston and Oakland are the places to see games outside of the Fieldhouse, so I'm pretty pumped. It's not like the arena is fresh and new, but I anticipate a lively, involved crowd. Once again we will have great seats, should be row 4 on the sidelines but with everyone in blue and gold it might be tough to tell.

Anyway, I'll do my best with photos but I've discovered over the last few seasons that each arena has it's own rules that vary wildly from place to place. The Fieldhouse has been one of the more forgiving arenas when it comes to cameras. Pretty disappointing when half the reason for the road trip is to check out the other arenas.

Have you guys ever actually seen the Pacers win a game on the road? ;)

Have fun, I'm sure that Gnome will let everyone in the general area know that you are Pacers fans. Just make sure he doesn't start booing during the National Anthem, they may take it the wrong way. :)

I think The Barclays center can be added to that list that arena looks amazing and in the games I have seen the atmosphere has been amazing. Sleep Train Arena (Arco) looks like a dump but the fans are normally great. Agree on GS that place is amazing watching on TV the crowd is great one of the few places you feel like you are at the game watching that is how loud that crowd is.

Arco Arena is small....DAMN small...hence why it's really loud. I went to the SacTown Pacer game a few years back....it was loud...but small. The fans are dedicated....but I will say that it was the only game that I have ever gone to where there was a rowdy and irritating fan that had no problem bothering me cuz I was rooting for the opposing team. This is likely an isolated incident......but keeping in mind that I am always in "enemy territory" when I go to see a Pacers games ( I live in the SF Bay Area and can only go to Warriors/Pacers games )....no one has ever bothered me....except when I went to the one Kings game.

Now, having posted that I figured this would be a good place to post photos from my earlier solo trip up to Minneapolis. Some of the more observant PD'ers noticed my choice seat for that horrible experience. Nothing in the world compares to the utter defeat you feel when an entire arena celebrates the last-second layup win over your team.

I'm getting used to it by this point. Here's my record the last 3 years:

10-11
DAL - loss, down 10 most of the night (Gnome had been in OKC before this for a real slaughter)
HOU - lost by 30 or something and then had the post-game locker room fight, the low point of the Vogel era

11-12
SAS - loss, down 10ish for the most part but played a spirited game and had some chances
HOU - should have won easily but ended up needing OT to get it done...finally a road victory

12-13
Minny - not a pretty game, terrible Pacers effort, and pathetic to see how much the Minny fans really thought there team was good without Rubio and Love (they aren't)

So I'm 1-5 at this point, Gnome was 0-3 2 years ago and didn't hit the road last year. Not sure what his record was before that. And it's hard not to think our fortunes aren't about to change. Oh what I wouldn't do for another Hill miracle finish.

Anyway, Minny...

First, the location is great. Minneapolis is nice city with good public transportation and like Indy it has it's sports arenas downtown. My friend lives within walking distance which amplifies this effect. The prior two summers we did Twins games in Target Field and it's awesome.

HOWEVER....the arena just sucks. It's very MSA in the grey cement concourse and low lighting. It feels grungy and has zero character or decorative qualities to it. Plus it's oddly inside another building, meaning you go inside and give them your ticket, and then you move from this non-arena space further along till you actually enter the arena. Almost like a convention center, an old cement convention center. Some paint and decorations would go a long way. I enjoyed the Texas arenas more, especially Dallas.

The arena inside appears smaller, it only has 2 levels with a row of suites in- between. There are bars/Best Locker Room types of areas off of both ends of the arena and with my seat right on the front row I found the amount of foot traffic that had to return from those bar areas and walk virtually in my seat space to be annoying as hell. They don't have aisle space down there and it appears they let A LOT more people interact with those lower level spaces. Also it appears that you can enter the game from one of the bars, meaning they have a street entrance and then you show your ticket to move on into the arena, at least as far as I could figure out.

But enough talk, here's some photos.

http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l8/Naptown_Seth/Arena1.jpg

They've tried to make some type of special experience by placing giant chair/loveseat types of seating on the arena concourse. Meh.

http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l8/Naptown_Seth/Pacers_Minny_2012/Arena2.jpg

I did like the color seating with the logo green and black pattern. Note the suites.

http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l8/Naptown_Seth/Pacers_Minny_2012/Arena2b.jpg

Note the sign for the bar above the tunnel. Both ends are like this. Note the very flat, long area of baseline seating which moves fans farther away than BiLF does.

http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l8/Naptown_Seth/Pacers_Minny_2012/Arena2c.jpg

Also I didn't care for the bland cement walls/structure at the top of the arena.

http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l8/Naptown_Seth/Pacers_Minny_2012/Arena2d.jpg

Hey, banners.

http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l8/Naptown_Seth/Pacers_Minny_2012/Arena3.jpg

For some reason Minny put Chris and Quinn on the opposite side of the court. So there is NO center court front row seating, period. Both sides have scoring/announcing. They offset this with more "by the bench" seats, but when you are 6 seats from the bench is it really better than being center court on the other side? I say no. Note that you can see Brooke standing in a blue skirt waiting to do some pre-game broadcasting.

http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l8/Naptown_Seth/Pacers_Minny_2012/Arena4.jpg

The one cool thing they do is use the full moon motif. You can see it in the lighted photo, and then with my unfortunately blurry photo you see how they turn out all the lights except for this full moon. The photo has it overexposed so you can't see the moon details, but the effect live is very good. Then the fans all do wolf howls. Pretty cool. Not rocket flies up into scoreboard cool, but pleasantly unique.

The shooting lines

A decent pair of shots showing Green getting his jumper away while B Roy tried to close out on him

http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l8/Naptown_Seth/Pacers_Minny_2012/Img_8720.jpg

The infamous AK47 bat wing tattoo. I got a much better look before realizing it might make a good photo. Definitely a head-scratcher choice in my opinion.

http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l8/Naptown_Seth/Pacers_Minny_2012/Img_8726.jpg

Paul gets a little too aggressive on the shot close out, and Aldelman ruins the high price seating.

http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l8/Naptown_Seth/Pacers_Minny_2012/Img_8733.jpg

A couple of shots of Paul squaring off on Chase. The first one has better focus/stability, but the 2nd has better composition. Typical failure in the world of sports photos. So tough to get it just right.

West doing what he does against Pekovic. The game was very physical.

http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l8/Naptown_Seth/Pacers_Minny_2012/Img_8757.jpg

A ruined photo kinda but I like it when some of the action is blurred while other parts are crisply frozen. This one almost works, and pretty much describes every freaking offensive trip for Minny in the 4th quarter.

Best I could do with my view slow lens, the only lens Minny would let me bring in. Hopefully Sacto and/or GSW are more forgiving.

Just a FYI......inside the arena and the floor itself....yes, the Oracle Arena has been improved and the atmosphere is much better.....but comparing the concourse area where the food is.....no way is the Arena any better than what ( I imagine ) the Staples Center is setup much less compared to the Fieldhouse. Add in that the Oracle Arena is located in the middle of a bad part of Oakland where you'd have to drive elsewhere in order to get something to eat or drink.....I'd say that the Fieldhouse is WAAAYYYY better than the Oracle Arena.

Also...where are you sitting?

My brother ( you met him when we came to Indy ) got me seats in Section 102 in Row 2....right behind the bench.

Are you going to be sitting right behind the bench again like you normally do?

Anyway, I'll do my best with photos but I've discovered over the last few seasons that each arena has it's own rules that vary wildly from place to place. The Fieldhouse has been one of the more forgiving arenas when it comes to cameras. Pretty disappointing when half the reason for the road trip is to check out the other arenas.
At the Oracle Arena....if you have a DSLR that has a lens that is longer than a standard lens ( as in one that is clearly one of those professional lens ), then there is a 50/50 chance that the Security Guard will tell you that you can't bring it in and that you'd have to bring it back to your car.

Last year, I brought my super zoom lens and the security guard didn't even notice it. But after going to another game that same year....a different security guard said that I couldn't bring it and I had to bring it back to my car. The difference was that the first time that they didn't check.....the lens wasn't attached to the DSLR...whereas the 2nd time that they did notice....the lens was attached to the DSLR. You can bring it....but I'd suggest keeping it separate from the DSLR itself.....while being prepared to bring it back to your car if the Security Guard notices it.

BTW....as a result of this.....I got one of those "all in one" lens that has a super-zoom lens but is the same size as a standard DSLR lens.

Yes, depending on Fed Ex at least. Seller held the tickets for some reason and finally shipped at the last second.

And we should be in row 4 behind the bench, 3 rows in front of you.

Comes with parking pass which will come in handy if I have camera issues. I'll do the "not attached" approach, maybe put the longer lens in my camera bag and then have the camera out with the default lens on it.

Also one other funny note. Due half-seasons and to staying in Minny for the weekend which caused me to miss the home game vs Washington that I had tickets for (DOH!), the GSW game will mark the 3rd time I've seen the Pacers on the road (MIN, SAC, GSW) vs seeing them 3 times at home (SAC, DAL, NOH).

I'm the rare case of a fan having a road heavy early schedule. ;)

Awesome. I checked out the seats when I went to the ( coincidental ) Warriors/TWolves game and the seats in Row 2 are 4 or 5 rows behind the bench. These 4-5 rows are the Courtside A1-A5 seats. The seats that we will be in are still very good....close enough for you to yell at Hibbert when he's getting outmuscled by Carl Landry :banghead:.

Hope you enjoy the game, Gnome! Hibbert's had two nice games in a row against the Lakers at Staples.

Seth, Staples is pretty nice, as is the entire LA Live area next to the arena. It's interesting to go to an arena that opened at the same time as BLF but is completely different. It's worth the experience to see a Lakers game, but going to GS is awesome. They have the best fans by a decent margin imo. I'll be curious to hear both of your takes since you've been to OKC, the second best fan environment.

After I find a Great Clips or Super Cuts (My beard needs some tightening) we will be hitting I-15 for L.A. Right now, I'm thinking about going down to the sports book and seeing what the line is on the Blue & Gold for tonight's game. If it is something crazy like double digits I may be tempted to drop a Benny on the game. I know I'll place some wagers on the games over the weekend when we return to our room here in Vegas. Well, here's to tonight and a Pacer's Victory!

Roaming Gnome's Pacers Road Trip Record

As a fan of the Pacers that is so dedicated to the team that he is willing to fly out to attend Road games....You know that you are not allowed to bet against your team, right? ;)

Regardless of the spread....I always bet on the Pacers to cover the spread. The only thing I ever do is try to figure out whether to bet over or under ;)

As for your only road win....you know what that means, right? You have to take Hicks with you on your Pacers Road trips.

Roaming Gnome

Trust me.. I've been bugging Hicks to make one of these long road trips out west. I think him having the worst seat in the NBA at The Palace of Auburn Hills permanently scared him or maybe my driving through Detroit. If I can find that picture of "the worst seat in the NBA" I'll post it. Essentially, it is at the top of the arena with the stairs ending right in front of his seat. Problem was.... The stairs had a handrail anchored right in front of the seat.... So, he had to straddle this handrail to sit in this seat.

Wait, you didn't include the Detroit game in your road trip record.

195 Over-Under seems like a sure thing for the under. Pacers defense and offense seems like a sure 90-85 type outcome...and given their knack for close games I'd say the Pacers +7 in a low scoring, tight game seems realistic.

Gnome
Could I give you $20 to parlay those 2 bets - Under and Pacers +7?

We have attended 2 games together - Dallas and Houston. This was part of the "3 worst games in Vogel's career" week that was OKC, DAL, HOU. So not good.

My road victory was a solo trip last year, and it went OT.

But we've never sprinkled in the El Pacero factor, so don't lose hope yet.

The Detroit game was versus the Cavaliers during LeBron's reign. I think I've seen more road games not involving the Pacers, but now it's pretty much just seeing our squad on the road.

Anyway, We just crossed into California but before we left we stopped by the Planet Hollywood sports book and put some action on the game
Lakers were +8 (meaning Pacers can't lose by more than 7 to double my money. If they lose by 8 I'll get my money back on a push). I put $50 on the Pacers
The over/under was 196 (meaning you bet a side whether the total points will be over or under 196) I put $20 on the under.
Parlay bet: (meaning it's a grouped bet. You have to win all parts of the bet to win. It pays better since there is more risk) Seth and myself parlayed $20 on the above single bets.
On a side note, I got my hair cut and beard tightened up. Can't be looking like Rupert in Hollywood! As far as eats (a subject that Peck will appreciate) we hit this fast food place called "Raising Canes" Chicken Fingers on our way out of LV. Damn, they were really good fingers for fast food. The Texas toast was good too.

Well, See y'all at Staples Center.

Thanks and good luck tonight. Good thing you got the bets in before the "Kobe might not play" info came out.

Come on at least a 90-85 Pacers loss, or better yet a 90-85 Pacers win. Let's have Roy get a 10-17 game going tonight and kick the slide a little.

BTW, I lost a 4 bet parlay (with friend) on the under when the stupid Kings/Pacers went to OT. Had they won in regulation I would have hit for a nice chunk of cash. Freaking OT, argh.

There's a Raising Cane's here in Columbus. Cane's sauce is my current addiction. It goes great on everything.

Gnome just got PAID!

Did I understand you right that you did the 50 single, a 20 single and also the 20 parlay? Risk 90 and maybe turned that into 210 total I'm estimating. Can't recall if the 2 bet parlay pays 50 or 60 on 20. Whatever, FREE WINE MONEY FOR FRIDAY. :D
With that in mind it's entirely possible we might miss the Sacto game. ;)

Beck and the aussie crew got a late 4th quarter mention, and of course we could see them all game due to the seat location. No sign of the Gnome but maybe the seats weren't as close as they will be the next 2 nights.

edit: I believe we see those dirtbags sitting behind QB and Chris right now on the post game. w00t Someone needs to twitter taunt them.

Don't spend the $$$ until you see the ticket...but I think that with a 2 Team Parlay....it has 3.5 to 1 odds.....so for $20...you should get back $70.

Naptown_Seth
11-28-2012, 01:57 AM
Yeah, I know parlays are pretty poor risk/reward payout and I don't do them enough to know the rates. But 2 50/50 bets give a 1/4 risk so even the 3.5 payout favors the house, unless you happen to know that the Pacers are incapable of playing high scoring games or games that don't go to the last second in which case it was like going to the ATM.

And Gnome gets a road win under his belt.

They should build an arena in downtown SF. Of course, they might not have much luck as the 49ers are moving to Santa Clara because negotiations with the city of SF fell through.

SF is the best though. Of all of the US cities I've been to, NYC is the only one I like more than SF.

I'm curious, what do you like about Boston? The arena itself looks incredibly average on TV. The place is certainly loud when the Celtics are good though. Plus you have the banners, parquet, retired numbers, and all of the Celtic mystique.

I've seen games in just two cities outside of Indy: The old Houston Summitt for a Pacers-Rockets game when I was a kid in 1996 (Rockets were defending champs at the time) and MSG for a Knicks-Grizzlies game back in 2004. The Will Smith movie "Hitch" filmed a scene at this game, which was pretty cool. MSG is a great place to see a game. I think the views from the upper level seats are much better than those at BLF.

I meant Boston as a place, not so much the quality of the new arena. Even with the loss of the original Garden, it's still a place full of Celtics fans and Celtics history. I hate the Celtics, their fans and their history, but I respect the idea of them.

Billy is bumming me out. I hope I enjoy the Oracle experience more than that. We have a parking pass but the train idea intrigues me. Gnome is driving so I guess it's his call.

I saw a couple of Pacers games at the Summit. Very weird arena both in location and layout. I never got why they built it there and in that style, basically a grass hill with a black glass square on top (which is a church now). One thing they did do was have a food area that was off in it's own area rather than blocking the concourse walkway.

Arenas I've seen
The Hive (original Bobcats) - but not a Pacers game.
Summit (old Rockets)
Toyota Center (new Rockets)
San Antonio (current, but did go to Boilers AlamoBowl in the A-dome)
Dallas (current)
Target Center (T'Wolves)

I think Dallas has been my favorite, but the Spurs have something near and dear to my heart - YOU AREN'T ALLOWED TO ENTER YOUR SEAT DURING THE GAME, ala baseball. They make you wait till a stoppage of play so you don't disrupt everyone. To me that says something about respect for the sport and made me appreciate their fans.

I've been by Key Arena (Sonics), but never was there when a game was going on. Always wanted to see a game there. Loved the location and style.

Sorry it took a few days to hammer these out, but as some of you pointed out... My 4 game "on the road" streak is finally over. My wife is so happy too because she was thinking she was the jinx. Now, she is blaming Seth and Duke Dynamite for losses that happened on the road in her presence. Anyway, due to my phone's battery being on life support half the night my photos are extremely limited. As for being in Staples Center while the Pacers handled their business was just fantastic (not as good as going to the Sports Book this morning). Here are some shots that I did manage to get before my phone started laughing at me.

A win on Chick Hearn night... One of my favorite broadcasters. It was nice to be in the building & see the Lakers honor him.

[b]Banner City... From the gift shop all the way to stuff in the arena bowl you'd be hard pressed to find anything that says 2 other major league teams play in this building. The gift shop was beyond pathetic when it came to finding LA Kings or LA Clippers gear. The actual gift shop employee told me there was more across the street at the ESPN Zone.

This Christmas tree is set up on this public ice skating rink. It's hard to see the rink from the temporary stage that was set up for the L.A. Symphony. Personally, It is one of the best I've ever seen. I love how the front of Staples, ESPN zone and the Nokia Theater make that grand public plaza. Kinda like the Fieldhouse and Georgia St... without the Harness Lofts Parking lot
http://i988.photobucket.com/albums/af9/Roaming_Gnome74/Road%202012/2012-11-27170535.jpg

The Final Score... Well, as for the Staples Center as a place to watch basketball... I personally liked it. I thought the lighting was perfect with it dark in the stands and the court lit up like a stage where basketball was the feature presentation. The building seems A LOT smaller than it does when viewed from TV, but I don't know about that balcony... Eventhough they are not as far away as it would seem... They are still UP a good bit with 3 layers of luxury suites separating them from the "club level".
I don't know what it was about the Staples Center organ, but it sounded like a real Stadium Organ in comparison to the too much treble, not enough bass <s>Fairgrounds</s> Fieldhouse Organ.
For many years, Peck and myself would make jokes about their P.A. announcer being layed back and low key, not the hype guys that we've grown so use to. The answer might be "no" for X, Y and Z reasons, but might be worth sending a note to the Pacers about.

A few years ago the Redskins started surveys for certain fans (year one it was season ticket holders. Then I got another one for general fans. Regardless, it was a cool thing for the team to do). I did not expect anything to come of it, but for 2 or 3 years I suggested I suggested the Redskins do something to the Mavericks for a military appreciation day.

Sure enough, this past summer the team announced they were going to have a game (I think it may be this Mondays game against New York) where they have a whole section donated to military families.

Not saying it was only one suggestion, but what is the harm in asking?

Perhaps even a question for Rob?

What did you think of the crowd? A lot of people have the thought that Lakers fans aren't good fans.

Well, the things that I always heard about Laker fans arriving late was pretty accurate in my eyes. The building was a li'l over half capacity at tip, but by about mid 1st quarter it looked sold out. As for the fans... I thought they were just typical "NBA" fans. They'd get up when the Lakers would make a run and at the end of the game Staples Center was "play-off loud". One thing that felt memorable was when Kobe had the ball, you'd hear this murmur in the crowd anticipating something was going to happen. It reminded me of how our crowds were with the ball in Reggie's hands in a tight ball game. At any rate, I wouldn't go into a Lakers game expecting the OKC crowd, but it wasn't the morgue that Conseco Fieldhouse was during the Jim O'Brien years. As for the individual fans around us down in the lower bowl behind the Pacers 2nd half basket, they actually took me pretty good for being the "Liquored Up Annoying Road Guy". Trust me, I was heard for every made Pacer basket. Most of the Laker fans around me kept telling me the game was "Kobe Close" and trust me... When Kobe hit that game tying shot... Oh did I ever hear it! Got pats on the back and a guy behind took my hat off and handed it to me. Good nature stuff though.

One thing I forgot... The ushers are very unforgiving when it comes to getting anywhere you're not suppose to be. After the game, I tried a few different ways to get down to speak with Mike Wells, Chris and Quinn (Something that I've always been able to do in any other venue) but was turned away. Considering that we have better seats in Sacramento & Oakland that shouldn't be a problem.

I *REALLY* wish I had been there now... Alas, I got home to LA the morning AFTER the game from vacation :(

But we got the win, and you guys had a great time! Sweet!!!

Okay....quick roll call again.

Whose going to be at the game?

I'm going to be in Section 102 in Row 2....I am pretty sure that Seth and Gnome will be in the same section.

Come down to join us!

Also...anyone up for a Post-Game get together in the concourse area?
i was in section 121, but i didnt stick around, have been battling a terrible headache all day long.

glad we got the win, was closer than i hoped, but watching David West do work tonight was awesome. He's a man and plays a mans game.

Denari put Pacero on, and Gnome and I as well.

AWESOME NIGHT! You guys have no idea.

We come down to our seats, which are front row center behind the scorers table. We are sitting directly behind Boyle, AC and their sound guy. Just next to us is some random Pacers fan. Nice enough but quiet.

And then....in comes 4 drunk, rowdy dudes from Fresno that are big time Pacers fans. One was a fan prior to PG, the other went to Fresno and is a PG/Pacers fans and their two buddies love the NBA were full on board for cheering for the Pacers. They IMMEDIATELY start taunting the Kings during the pre-game shooting lines. Loudly. Annoyingly even.

I say to Gnome "these guys will be kicked out by halftime".

Gnome and I are drinking so as the first quarter wears on we are getting more into the groove of the Fresno 4.

At halftime I go up to hit the head and as I am coming out who do I run into? El Pacero. I thought he was only doing the GSW game but here he is. We start talking, we are loving the game so far and I start telling him about the Fresno 4. No sooner do I do that then a couple of them walk into the restroom and we all start talking. Meanwhile random pro-Indy people pass through too and it's a full-on love fest. I mean more Pacers love than you get at home games.

So one of the Fresno 4 takes Gnome and I to the liquor stand and buys shots for me, Gnome, himself and his buddy. Had we kept Pacero with us he would have bought him a shot too. By now we are really in full-on Pacers love mode and even I'm getting rowdy.

We get back just at the start of the 2nd half and everyone is getting really loud, even me. Boyle comments about how loud we are getting and people tweet that you can here the guys behind us and it sounds like Ric Flair....because they are intentionally doing the Ric Flair "wooo" and then yelling Ric Flair.

They also yell at every single Pacer including Vogel and Shaw. "Shaw, assistant coach of the year" and "Vogel, you're the man, give it to West". Everytime Danny comes over these guys are yelling to him and he's talking to them and all of us. At one point he gives both Gnome and I a fist bump. Danny takes a picture with one of them after the game. It's just epic, full interaction.

When they buy us beers during the 3rd we are all best friends and you have 8 rowdy Pacers fans in the first 2 rows of center court that are louder than half the stadium. It's crazy, it's better than a home game. When David has 15 at the half I say "he's going for 30" and we all agree this is a probable outcome and a good thing to cheer for. So every touch he gets we are getting more and more into it. By the time they are feeding him near the 30 point level we are standing and yelling. For the final minute of the game an usher comes down and tells us to sit down so Kings fans can see their offensive end. It's that kind of scene, the kind of situation I would hate if it were happening in the Fieldhouse, but I'm drunk and screw them.

(Having said that, the Kings staff and fans were extremely pleasant, wonderfully positive and interactive with us, even the fan next to me that was having to put up with most of it)

It seems like most of you couldn't see how rowdy we were getting during the broadcast, but I assure you it was borderline offensive to the hometown fans due to our loud exuberance. The Fresno 4 were great catalysts and actually smart, serious fans despite being lit up. We never felt like the game was out of hand, we never got very upset. It was really just positive and "expressive".

I apologize to Boyle and AC, and Gnome tweeted that to MB himself in fact. But on the other hand, what a great way to experience a road win, with a real mini-A55 there to push them and with the players acknowledging it. Glad to know that they know we are there.

The Fresno 4 invited us out for drinks but Gnome and I decided we were too drunk already to handle that. But a couple of them are trying to work a plan to come visit Indy and we told them we'd set them up. Contact info exchanged and Pacers Nation gets tighter than ever.

Another crazy thing is that we stopped at In and Out before the game and who do we run into? Freaking Rob Johnson, Orlando's brother, the one that took care of him after he lost his mother and grandmother. Super nice guy, just great. Before we left I made sure to tell him how impressive it was that he took OJ under his wing and that we all admired his effort (and his other brother's). OJ was dressed but obviously didn't get to play, but maybe tomorrow night. Rob said he's going to Oakland so maybe it will work out.

Oh, another PS - Danny came out onto the concourse where Gnome, me, Pacers, SportsGirl, etc were talking. He again exchanged some friendly comments with us. Easy for him to just brush us off but he responded to all our comments and was really interactive. Just outstanding. There were lots of "we need you back", but I was quick to throw in the "but don't rush it, seriously". At one point he was kinda serious about it and said he really wouldn't rush it.

Great night for a Pacers fan, one of my top 5 Pacers game experiences ever, and I've been to a lot of them.

Banner City...

Awesome stuff guys. The Kings facility is probably the weirdest sports venue I've ever seen. It looks more like a small community college building than a basketball arena.

I have to say that inside is small, but in a basketball-specific arena kind of way. Baseline seats are tight to the court, the slope away is modestly vertical so the seats stay closer to the floor. There are only 2 levels with suites in between so "upper level" isn't that high up really.

The lower bowl has WOOD flooring for the most part, as in polished wood. It's extremely worn down, but in a Wrigley Field kinda way that feels old but quaint. They have this brass rail theme going for the suites and the upper level "boxes" (first 2 rows in upper level) this is kinda odd but with some charm.

I have some concourse pictures that I'll post later, but bottom line is that it's moderately well Kings branded with lots of purple and black. I also liked the restroom layout which featured a glass block wall at the entrance and good spacing.

So it is small and old and it definitely lacks the exterior presence of an "event" arena, but it's kinda lovable. I'd much rather see another game in Sleepytime than in Target. And I can imagine that when it was first built it was a pretty sweet deal.

VERY FRIENDLY STAFF all around. Lots of friendly, welcoming fans. Lots of people came up and asked if we were from Indy and were genuinely happy that we'd made the trip. Food prices were also reasonable. And it would seem like getting to, in and out of the arena would flow well even on a busy night.

It does lose points for being in a weird suburb apartment complex area instead of connected to same part of the city.

Again, this is the same exact feeling that I had when I attended the Pacers/Kings game a few years back. But due to the size....it also explains why it gets do damn loud in the arena.

Looking at where the Kings play, you can see why the Maloofs want a new Arena.

Big ups to Pacers Nation (I know every fan of every team goes with nation, but we are earning it so **** them). Pacero and sportsgirl did the roadie. Cable came up with family(and he made the trip into Indy for the playoffs). We added lurker Ryan who is Twitter pals with El Pacero.

Orlando's brother Rob found us again and took a ton of group pix after the game. It just felt really special to have Pacers family on the road in all its forms, win or lose. Winning is great but the PN must be bigger than that.

Oracle was awesome I thought. Looks nice to me. Good layout and lighting, great atmosphere and great, smart fans. We talked with several all night about the game and the two teams in general. A couple of guys by the bench got rowdy in response to us but it turned into friendly jabs by the end.

Thanks to Mrs gnome and san fran Ryan for getting me in and out of who knows where san fran at 1 am while I was enjoying the warm embrace of rum (serious Hemmingway levels of rum).

I'll get pix posted tonight when I'm back in Indy, barring anymore delays (see wells twitter).

And on that note, oracle let me get my bilf approved lens in, but then an usher scolded me to remove it. So pix quality will be limited. The definition of professional is an insult to all pro photogs.

We traded out Pacero and Ryan for Orlando Johnson's brother Rob, whom I already mentioned met us randomly as the Sacto In and Out. I think he came up to us first in SF, that's how friendly he was. You couldn't imagine a nicer guy which bodes well for Orlando's future here and in life in general.

This is the sideline club, basically where the sideline concourse food area is at BILF, but not open to everyone. This was not the sweeter Best Locker Room type setup that Gnome, his wife and I went to before the game (though Best LR is cooler, but more crowded, due to view of tunnel, etc).

Note that we met 2 guys who used to live in Indy, one in Carmel. I think he was an IU grad but they'd both been in SF for about 10 years I think. Like us they'd been enjoying the adult kool-aid and were pretty happy to hang out with us post-game.

I will echo IMAWHAT et el, awesome of you guys to do this trip.

Did you guys stay at the same hotel as the players? I know the NFL does not announce hotels, but if you ask around (at least here in VA) you can find out where the Redskins/Wizards are staying for certain trips.

I think Sports Girl would appreciate the compliment considering a healthy smile is within her profession. As for staying where the players stay... Probably not, unless they were hitting up the Homewood Suites or LaQuinta! We just hit the local Inn near either the arena or airport. On Friday the players didn't stay in Sacramento. They took a bus to Oakland right after the game.

You better run away fast. In & Out is the best fast food by a wide margin, imo. Good burgers, freshly cut fries, great service; I know where I'm having lunch now!

I liked In n' Out, but I'll say it...it's overrated. It's good, don't get me wrong, but it's not the life changing experience people make it out to be.

Back in here in California...."In N Out" Burger has a cult-like following like there are people that love Krispy Kreme donuts.

I love their burgers ( cuz it's cheap and a high quality burger ) but after being introduced to "Five Guys" recently, I'd pick "Five Guys" Burgers over "In N Out".

I love 'In and Out' and 'Five Guys' but 'Punch' downtown Indy might be my current favorite burger.

On a related note....just like you guys in the East don't have In-N-Out Burger.....the West Coast doesn't have "White Castle". On my trip to Indy for the 2nd round of the playoffs.....once I got off the plane....we were hungry and the first place we drove by and ate lunch at in Indy was at a "White Castle".

Like many things I was able to go see and do in Indy.....I have checked off eating at "White Castle" off my "Bucket List".

Just do what I did....add "Eating a Burger at In-N-Out" to your Bucket List.

Well, if you drink enough to crave a White Castle during the day, you have bigger problems than the White Castle.

BillS, I assumed that you would have taken the road trip with Seth out to the West Coast.

You should have joined Seth, Gnome and Mrs. Gnome on their quick jaunt over to Napa Valley for some wine ;)

Have you ever ate at "Bru" on Mass Ave? It's pricey, but the burgers are amazing.

"96th Street Steakburgers" is also awesome.

You know what I think is extremely overrated? "Jack N the Box". I went to the one on Co Line Rd on the South Side when it opened almost a year ago and there were so many freaking people there. I've never seen so much hype for such mediocre food. I'd rather eat McDonalds.

Right down the street from me, pretty good.

I actually went there for the first time a few months ago while looking at cars. Awesome, like a better version of Steak n Shake, and I really like Steak n Shake.

Agree on Jack.

Yes, exactly. Not that pricey either, IIRC. I think you can get a combo for like 7 something, which is a pretty good deal considering a Big Mac meal is pushing 6 bucks after tax.

I'll have to try "Punch" out.

I've never had In N Out. I love 5 Guys, but it's pretty pricey if you get a burger, fries, and a drink, given that they don't have a normal-sized fries and instead dump a whole bag of them on top of your burger. 96th Street is an incredible value.

Sorry to dig this back up, but I just saw several PMs with one of them directing me here.

As I mentioned in a PM to another member, changing the lights isn't as easy as turning some of them off. I wish it was because it would be a cool change. It is a topic of discussion internally.

The funny part is when the Fieldhouse was being built the "new thing" was having a well-lit arena. I still remember the first game in the building and being shocked that you could clearly see the faces of the fans on the other side.

Bump. Fransciso and one of his buddies from the Fresno 4 is flying in for the OKC game in April. Staying downtown.

Pretty freaking cool, a reverse road trip. Kinda like Cable coming here and us going to the Bay.

I put it on Twitter. He's got his eye on a couple of pretty close seats, but when the time comes I'd think he might want to PTO with A55/G2 or swing by there. Plus if he's up for it I figured I'd take him to some watering holes downtown.
Depends on how much time he has and what he wants to do. Just getting the prep work out there.

Man, I'm just loving this season. Tons of new friends, great trips, great memories.
